Thank you simpleasabc - will definitely try them this week! Some more ideas for MrsBrown nz: beef bourguignone (followed Ina Garten's recipe a few nights ago and was delicious) or steak with Diane sauce, which would be lovely with that truffle mash :) dead easy! I do love the idea of the chocolate mousse, you can't go wrong with that ... Who doesnt like chocolate ... ;)

Easy non-cook starter that I love doing and it always goes is parma ham wrapped around melon slices. The lamb dish sounds delicious. I often do a beef strogonoff with fluffy white rice and a crisp green salad for a dinner party. another really good easy desert requiring no cooking is a very dark bitter chocolate mousse (you can put brandy or cointreau in it too) served in little cups with really nice wafers. Something I have had at a freinds which was delicious was a beautiful spiced berry compote served with very very good vanilla ice cream. She said she just makes it with the frozem mixed berries from Carrefour. It was lovely.

My stock easy entertaining supper is lamb in port sauce, obviously there is @lcohol in it if that's ok? About 2-3 lamb medallions (or nice size fillet pieces) per person - nice and lean - seasoned with salt and pepper half a pint of cheap ruby port half a pint of beef stock (I use oxo 2 cubes) 3 tablespoons of redcurrent jelly about 6 tablespoons of double cream (or cooking cream) olive oil Heat the oil in a wide pan or flying pan. Brown on all sides, take meat out and rest on a plate with foil over it. Melt the redcurrant jelly in the juices, add the port and the stock, bring to the boil and reduce until about half and starting to look syrupy. Add the meat back to the pan with any juices, bring to a slow simmer and cook for about 10-15 mins to finish off the meat, when cooked, stir in the cream and mix well. I serve with either really nice riced/creamed potatoes and wilted spinach, or with some sauteed potatoes - voila!

if you have a microwave try warming camamberts with garlic and seasoning, serve one each or between 2 with a selection of bread chunks, celery sticks, apple slices etc to dip... yum... had it at a recent dinner party and it was fab..

Here's one I made earlier, Twin Butterfly: Parsnip and Orange Soup SERVES 4 10 ml (2 tsp.) olive oil 1 small onion, skinned and chopped 350 g (12 oz) parsnips, peeled and chopped finely grated rind of 1/2 orange juice of 1 orange 600 ml (1 pint) chicken stock pepper, to taste 1. Heat the oil in a large non-stick saucepan and cook the onion and parsnips for 5-8 minutes until the onion is soft. Add the orange rind, orange juice, stock and pepper. Cover and cook for about 10 minutes until the parsnips are tender. 2. Allow to cool slightly, then puree the soup in a blender or food processor. Return to the pan and reheat for serving. Mascarpone and Lime torte 200g ginger (or other) biscuits, crushed 50g butter, melted 2 x 250g tubs mascarpone cheese 40g icing sugar, sifted finely grated zest and juice of 2 limes (or 1 lemon or 1 orange) Mix biscuits and butter and press into 18cm/7in spring-sided or loose-bottomed cake tin Beat everything else together (can add 1-2 tablespoons fruit liqueur) and spread over biscuit base. Chill for 30 mins. That's it! Can decorate with lime slices or grated chocolate or melted chocolate drizzled over (I never bother with that stuff - it's delicious as is.) Bon app :)

Lots of lovely suggestions so far. For dessert you could do a non--baked cheesecake. You can prepare it in advance too as it needs to sit overnight in the fridge. Oooh, you've reminded me, I've got a recipe for a mascarpone and lime, lemon or orange "cheesecake" which takes max 10 mins to prepare and only needs half an hour in the fridge and it is WONDERFUL!

What about a antipasti platter? It's a bit out of the box but I recently did this for a dinner party and it was the biggest success. Check out this link for some guidance: http://culinarycory.com/2009/08/31/tips-to-creating-the-perfect-antipasti-platter/ I added different types of breads, lots of pickled bits (beetroot, gherkins etc.), selection of cheese, stuffed peppedews, pasta salad and sauces like chutney, mustard etc. I also did this brushetta recipe as an appetiser so as long as you have a toaster you should be fine. Just put the olive oil on after you toasted the bread - http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/bruschetta_with_tomato_and_basil/ Nothing needs to be cooked so you'll not need an oven. Well, you can easily make a lovely spicy carrot soup as a starter, or parsnip and orange soup, or leek and potato soup, or smoked salmon roulade, or hard boiled eggs with mayonnaise and anchovies, or just a lovely dressed up salad. For mains, there are any number of casserole dishes which you would normally cook in the oven, which can be left to simmer gently for hours on the stovetop. Normandy chicken, beef bourguignon, braised lamb shanks all spring to mind. Or, why not go retro and do a beef fondue for a change? New potatoes in butter and parsley or rice, and glazed carrots would go nicely with all of those. Pud - do an Eton Mess or Bombe Favourite with raspberry coulis, using bought meringue shells (no one will ever know) or buy something from a nice patisserie. Or a chocolate or lemon mousse? Syllabub? Zabaglione? edited by simpleasabc on 24/01/2012

How about homemade soup like courgette for starters. Sweat off an onion in some olive oil, add cubed courgette and cook for about 5 min. Add stock cube (I like the garlic and herb ones) and water. Use stick blender to blend. Serve with some creme fraiche and a small amount of bacon bits or shrimp on top. For main, how about a nice steak, mashed potato and green beans with garlic. All easy to cook on stove top. Dessert I would either make tiramisu or I would serve a cheese board as that requires no cooking at all. HTH
