Hi there. My husband( to be ) is potentially going to be working in Kuwait. We would like to live in Dubai with him commuting a couple of days a week . I've tried without success to get through to the UAE embassy in London to get visa advice to see if this even possible. I.e who would be the sponsor etc?

We are visiting Dubai shortly to look around at the residential areas and schools , any suggestions on family areas most welcome.

Will having our children before we are married be an issue at all?

Any advice would be very welcome. Many thanks

We moved from Dubai to Kuwait. Although it was really difficult in many ways I am glad we did as we had a chance to meet and live with locals and learn more a out Arab culture. We were actually involved in Ramandan celebrations instead of just moaning about closed cafes. You can tuck yourself away in an expat compound or you can take this opportunity to be a part of a country rather than just always an onlooker.

I lived in Kuwait for 2 years and loved it. Ok, so you haven't got the booze/nightlife/entertainment Dubai has but it does have some great restaurants, the usual shops, gyms etc I don't know much about family life over there - but friends had kids and seem to do ok. As others have said, the commute and living in 2 places would be a killer - expensive as well. Just take the plunge and head over there.

We used to live in Kuwait, before moving to Dubai (and then Doha) and I actually quite liked it. They have a few nice beach clubs there/coffee mornings/play groups, etc., although events were thin on the ground when we lived there (6 yrs ago). Not sure how you would get around the residency visa issue if your DH's work contract/residency is in Kuwait - do you not need a Dubai (UAE) residency visa to rent an apartment in Dubai? and get other services connected/bank accounts, etc...not 100% sure though as it's quite a few years since we lived in Dubai. I wouldn't want to be separated from my DH for so long, if we could all live together and all his traveling will wear him out. edited by chizz on 15/05/2013

There are plenty of families who are based in Dubai and DH working elsewhere in the GCC -- but as far as I know these were families that were already settled in Dubai when DH's work shifted somewhere else. I have a few colleague in Doha who are in this situation -- shifted here from work in Dubai, and the family remains based in Dubai. But given that you are not already settled in Dubai, why would you not just move to Kuwait as a family? There is a vibrant expat community there. It might not have the scale of activities the Dubai has, but for young kids it's should have more than enough. It just seems to me that adding a 3rd country into the mix means added complications.

i add my voice to the long working hours in this region, nobody leaves office 6pm on thu eve (as everything comes at the last minute). I have worked in Dubai for 5 years and then Kuwait for a year (travelling to Dubai often) and then moved again to Dubai. Plus, count the flights delays (specially the thu night flight, I used to cry of frustration specially if u have a plan waiting for u on the other country)... many family communities to stay in dubai, depends on other aspects that may concern u the most, like school, airport, office, budget.... have a look at motor city, victory heights, business bay, mirdif and there are many others.. as for the pre-school, wish u good luck with the search

It's doable if he can fly out Sunday morning and return Thursday night. There are plenty of flights a day between Dubai and Kuwait, it's not a long flight (less than 2 hours) and only an hour's time difference. My DH sometime does Kuwait as a day trip.

Thanks everyone for your replies. My children are 1 and 3 1/4. The eldest is in preschool here in the UK. There's no fixed time scale at the moment, I'm just trying to get my head round the complex logistics! Hopefully after visiting next weekend we will get some more answers to our questions? It's such a big move especially with children ! Everyone says its a super friendly there , it's hard to imagine a whole new social circle. It's very exiting though!! Thanks again

Your husband will kill himself with exhaustion if he is going to be flying in and out of Dubai constantly. Its hard enough for people who work in Abu Dhabi that is an hour drive away to do the commuting to Dubai. The working hours in the middle east are long and Im pretty sure his employer would want his employee living in the same country where his job is. Add to that the strain of finding a school place in Dubai with long waiting lists. Lots of expats live and work happily in Kuwait.

No idea how old your children are but school places are quite hard to find at the moment.

I don't know what the current situation is but we got our visa 13 years ago for us and 2 children and had only got married a few weeks before heading to Dubai. Noone ever questioned it.

It is possible but you will need to have a residence visa in Dubai to live here so either from a branch of the company he is working for or set up a small company to get your own visas or find someone who will give you one.
