Hi all,

I'm curious about how much women are spending at the beauty salon each month. I find it fascinating that Dxb is awash with ladies beauty salons everywhere. Yet when you go in so many are empty! I do threading and hair cutting at the salon spending around AED200 per month, tops. Everything else like hair colouring happens at home.

But then again when you go out at night to the latest hot spots most girls have tonnes of extensions, make-up and look like they just spent serious money at a salon....

I know there used to be posters spending upwards of Dhs. 1500 on cut, highlights, blow dry etc every few weeks, and that's just the hair on their heads. I see some ladies on a daily basis, with salon-finish hair, it doesn't seem like it was done at home. How do they manage that, are they at a salon every other day? It looks beautiful, really. You can throw on a bin liner of an outfit, if you have great hair it will pull everything else together.

Blow dry every 6 days at 150 Pedicure every 10-14 days...think that's about 80 or 90? Gellish Manicure every 2 weeks - has to be 150 or Manicure every 10 days and repolish every 5 days Hair colour - 300-400 - every 4 weeks Hair cut - c300 every 8 weeks Makeup - do myself Waxing - I don't Eyebrows - do myself....no one touches my precious brows!! Facial Threading - prefer to bleach In retrospect, my salon (Yas in Souk al Bahar) is very expensive but it's always full!!! Now I'm going to go to Amro for nails I really want to stop doing salon blowdrys as the salons here are so lazy that they just rough dry your hair til it's 95% dry and then start the styling, meaning that it looks good for about one evening and then that's it. No matter how many times I tell them they need to curl-dry my hair from *damp*. Anyway, the reason I always go to the salon is that I like to wash my hair in bottled water, which is literally the only way that my hair can stay in a decent condition. A lot of people here cannot have long hair without extensions as the water ravages the hair so badly! And extensions are tooooo expensive Sorry, but when do you find the time to do all this???

On average I spend Hair Conditioning Treatment: Dhs 200-300 Hair styles for parties: Dhs 200 Facials: Dhs 500 Hamam and massage: Dhs 600 I currently wax at home so I don't go to a salon as consistently as before. When I do, I either use a Monday discount, or a club membership discount, or the monthly special package offered. edited by Apricot on 19/04/2014

Who said it matters? Each to their own - fair enough. I have always wondered and been a little curious and obviously cant ask them to their faces. Its not my business but I wasn't having a go. I don't have a maid and I never comment on the maids threads, they keep pulling each other's hair on those. I could care less, but this is something I just wanted to know for the sake of curiosity and its my prerogative to ask. WO - makes sense. Whatever floats their boat.

Why does it matter ? Have to say I'm tiring of the endlessly judgemental tone on here...So what if some women employ help - each to their own and all that ....

Oh yes, the Repton car park catwalk is similar to where the children go to school, albeit no false lashes at 7:30 am thankfully. Its understandable, having a maid do everything, being a working mum, in a rush with lunch boxes, children and getting out the door (to be presentable at work after drop off). Or those who aren't working but use a maid to take care of *some* errands while they get the kids ready etc. But having a maid take care of everything so that you can put on a ton of makeup and look glam having a catch up post drop off? Actually I would say that to some women, that is the highlight of their day and the only opportunity they get to interact with their peers... so yes, they would take advantage of a helper's services to ensure that they are 'appropriately' turned out. And many take the maid with them so that they are not inconvenienced with lunchboxes, schoolbags etc.

[ Never mind the money, goodness knows what time they get up in order to look catwalk ready at 7.30am! Hmmmm... maids? On reflection, it's not *that* hard if a maid gets your kids ready for you, you have a twice-weekly blow-dry and weekly manicure. Then all you have to do is shower, dress and apply make-up.

Interesting responses. I am not so different as I thought, most of us don't seem to be spending a fortune. I have no kids so I don't know about Repton school but I am picturing Stepford Wives style gals. It is a mystery how some of these salons stay in business - rents and visas aren't cheap. Good Friday to all!

True. I guess some people are just consistent in spending across all areas, regardless of whether they can afford it. Lol. Never mind the money, goodness knows what time they get up in order to look catwalk ready at 7.30am! In answer to the OP, averaging it out I probably spend about 700 dirhams a month. It's money down the drain, I look a total hot mess the vast majority of the time :D

Don't be fooled... in certain communities, appearance of wealth is of utmost importance. Expensive schools go with other status symbols such as big cars, maids, fancy hair etc but are not necessarily an indicator of financial stability. What does being fooled have to do with anything? There are a lot of women at Repton who spend a large amount of time and money on their appearance. Whether they are up to their eyeballs in debt or rolling in cash is beside the point. True. I wonder about this too, just yesterday I was at the zoo also known as Zara at the checkout and everyone was so gussied up like they were attending a glam event, glossy hair, fake eyelashes (!), sky high stilettos, it all looked very expensive and high maintenance. They don't have kids and school fees! Have you ever been to Repton at school run time?! Don't be fooled... in certain communities, appearance of wealth is of utmost importance. Looking glam is not about how much money you spend. It is more how much time you have. You can learn makeup nail and hair tricks from YouTube.

We don't pay school fees but I don't know about anybody else - it's not something you talk about ... I've never been to a salon but I have my hair done every couple of months.

They don't have kids and school fees! I was under the impression that no one on this forum pays school fees? Or at least the majority don't? Everyone pays school fees in someway, whether it is part of their final salary or out of their in hand salary, either way the employee is paying. The majority i know have an allowance which only covers a proportion. Thanks for the clarification, we're self employed, so I have no clue about schools allowance in companies.

180 AED hair term every month. 120 AED manicure and pedicure once in a month 600 AED Thai massage every weekend for a month. 500 AED once every 3 months for hair treatment. Even if salons are empty, they make money by ripping of whoever comes to them. Lol
