Sorry to be blunt... but whoever in that accident was driving recklessly deserves to be in that accident! So sick and tired of the suicidal drivers on these roads! Yup, if anything, I commend their attempts to take their moronic selves out of the gene pool... it's just a shame that they feel the need to take out normal people with them. To be brutally honest, the government is in Cloud Cuckoo Land if they are hoping to get road fatalities down to 0 by such measures as limiting to 140kmph... the only way to do that would be to take almost all the drivers off the road.

yeh it happens of course. in the past there was no proper driver training, they were trained by the taxi drivers etc, who are not the best teachers. they now have in abu dhabi a better driving instructor school so it will get better, but that doesnt re-educate the drivers who are already on the road, and this then rubs off onto the expats who may have been better drivers when back in their own countries.

My daughter has just come home very subdued as she was just told that a girl she knew slightly was killed, with her boyfriend, in a hit and run here the other day. Tragic, unnecessary loss of life.

Interesting to note that only two women were amongst the injured - also read a report that two years ago the Police asked the RTA to put up fog warning signs on the road but nothing has been done, how sad to think that the death might have been prevented if they had put them up. DH was on this road that day and said the fog was very thin in Dubai then got suddenly very thick - warning signs would at least let drivers know what's ahead and if there is an accident they could warn them before they drive into the back of it do you want to look at the nationalities of all the injured, local, and indian/bangadelsh etc etc.

The National today has it on the front page: ABU DHABI // Abu Dhabi Traffic Police are urging the Department of Transport (DoT) to install illuminated message boards to alert drivers about road and weather conditions as soon as possible, following the 127-car pile-up on Saturday. Traffic officials said such signs could have prevented the chain of accidents that resulted in one death and at least 60 injuries near Al Samha on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai motorway. "These signs could give advanced notice of weather conditions and advise motorists to slow down and drive at a certain speed," said Brig Gen Hussein al Harethi, head of the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate. "They could also inform drivers of existing accidents before they approach them." By the way, DH has perfect eye sight and when he was travelling that day NO SIGNS what the traffic police are saying that there is plans to install the signs but they havent done it everywhere. i think there is one signpost just before taweelah which is before samha and ghantoot, but what they need is the ones that are above each lane on overhead gantries. they have more signs now in and around abu dhabi but not so many on the main abu dhabi/dubai highway. but its the dept of transport that have to put them in not the abu dhabi police.

I think anyone who has driven along the freeway with their eyes open for the past few months, if not longer, will confirm that the signs have been there. Just because things are in the papers (particularly here) does not mean its true.

there is no point putting up additional radars. drivers are clever......they slow down when they come close to a radar. and once they cross it....broooommmm.....off they go! instead of the speed radars on the roads, they should opt to put up 'average speed cameras'. that track the change in speed from quiet a distance away. that would force people to keep constant speed at all times..... radar or no radar this is what they have now in abu dhabi itself they are average speed cameras, and there are loads of people who are getting speeding tickets, i have just renewed my car again with no speeding fines....! why are these people now getting these fines because i drive at the speed limit and they cruise past me maybe only 5 kph faster but thats over the speed limit and so now the new cameras get you!! its not rocket science. it does make me laugh though that when i come off the main road to school the traffic lights at the end of the road i can see are red but they whooosh past me over the speed limits and then still have to wait at the red light, so they get a speeding fine and they get there at the same time as i did who kept it at the right speed.

Sorry to be blunt... but whoever in that accident was driving recklessly deserves to be in that accident! So sick and tired of the suicidal drivers on these roads! yeh but you may be driving correctly and get caught up in it and then you are taken down with the bad ones. Of course. I am referring to the reckless drivers. The innocent drivers who get caught up in these accidents I feel very bad for.

I wonder how many of the injured weren't wearing seat belts. Would be interesting to see if they ever use that stat to show how much safer you are when wearing one.

127 car pileup??? OMG yep you only need one to start the domino affect which is exactly what happened. Thats 127 bad drivers in my book. If every single one of those cars was driving at a safe distance from each other this would not have happened. I disagree its not 127 bad drivers what so ever. Even if you leave enough space between your cars it depends on how quick your reaction is to stopping. The fog was so bad people were driving less that 100 kmph but still couldnt stop in time due to the fog. Read Gulf news. It was a alot of bad drivers that caused the accident in the first place but you cant blame everyone. Any competent driver will know that if you can see the lights of the car in front in foggy weather you are driving to close. This accident IS down to bad driving as are most of the accidents that happen daily in the UAE. ETA... Taken from Gulf news....."In addition to recklessness, the Abu Dhabi - Dubai highway, which is one of the busiest roads in the UAE, is smooth and wide, which provides tempting reasons to over speed for some drivers on the road. Sixty-one people were injured and one died as a result of the car crash that occurred early Saturday morning in Al Samha. One of the main causes attributed for the crash was speeding, with many estimated to have continued driving at speeds of up to 140km/hr despite the heavy fog that occurred in the area. http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/emergencies/reckless-driving-a-major-cause-of-accidents-abu-dhabi-police-official-1.787041 edited by tally-ho on 04/04/2011

the paper is saying now that the speed limits have been changed because of the accident at samha but i noticed that the new signposts have been put up at baniyas which is the same stretch of road and they went up on the 1st. so i believe now they have decreased the speed from 160 to 140.

I m about to duck as I say this But most of the problems I have with idiots doing stupid things is women like me !!!!! European women !!!!!! Like they dont have the time to wait /stop/let you in / out / driving like loonies !!!!!!!!!!!!!! oooh not me i would let you out but only if you were not trying to ram into my car and cut in.... if you were asking nicely then i always let people in. What has always worked for me over here is if I'm trying to change or get into a lane, I stick my head out of the window and smile. Not once has somebody just ignored and not let me in! And it's nothing to do with my looks I can assure you!!!! :) yeh thats right if you are nice and polite then of course i will let you in, but if you deliberately drive up the right hand turning lane because you dont want to sit in the long line of traffic and then try and push your way in nope not happening in front of me.!!! be very careful trying to do that now in ab dabs, as with all these traffic cameras watching you, and the ones that you cannot see! i was once sitting at the red traffic lights in the first lane and this guy drove up the right hand turning lane and pushed in at the front of the traffic lights, what he didnt see was next to me in the middle lane was a traffic car and he got up behind him and put his lights on and pulled him over!! hehehe this was a couple of years ago now when they were just telling people off but you just never know he may have fined him anyways he got held up which obviously defeated his purpose of cutting in. Nice!!! Where I come from everybody lets everybody in so much so that you can end up being there for ages "arguing no, after you please!!!!" I realised I had lost that touch a bit when I went back home and wouldn't let anybody in and my friends and family were berating me for it!!!! But I soon got back into the courtesy mode!!!! That aside, I must admit that in the main if you physically wave somebody in to your lane, they will acknowledge it with a wave but then again, maybe I've just been lucky with having nice drivers on the road! Now the idiots that flash and beep when you are in the fast lane, don't get me started on that one!!!! I just like to stay where I am and pee them off by just touching on my brakes from time to time. Naughty I know but that type really do annoy me!!!! think you have been lucky if they always say thank you. i know what you mean, if i am driving correctly at a speed which everyone else is doing and i get flashed if i cannot safely move over i will not, they will just have to stay behind me until i move out of the way!! it really annoys me when i am in the 3rd lane and a car is shoved over into the front of me because they are scared out of the way many a time i have nearly crashed into themas they havent given me the room!

I bet most didn't put their lights on - any lights - either. People will never learn to drive with caution in dangerous conditions.
