What is her weight in kg? We were given a dose/weight sheet from our doctor's office, 15kg is 9.5 ml per dose for Calpol (regular) and Brufen is 7.5 ml. Call your doctors office and if you can't get a doctor, ask to speak with one of the nurses who gives vaccinations and they may help put your mind at rest. edited by Flossie on 19/05/2011

Actually Calpol 6+ was pescribed to my DD when she was only 3 yrs old by her paed as she has an bad fever! Maybe that's why you have this bottle in your house. It was prescribed! I was concerned myself when she was prescribed this medicine but the doctor promised me she will be fine and I then took her for a second opinion & it was the same feedback. It's OK and nothing to worry about. Hope this helps

When DD decided to help herself to the Panadol Extra "sweeties" that I was completely unaware DH had left on the table, the doctors told us that a person would need to take in the region of 10g of paracetamol before there would be any physical adverse side effects (to their liver, etc) - it's possibly the least harmful drug on the market. As it was DD was fine with having taken 3 pills of 500mg. DH, however... Different story, however, if you'd given the Calpol Plus or any other paracetamol suspension with antihistamines included, in which case it's the antihistamines that could cause big problems (there have been fatalities). It's for this reason that paracetamol for children with added antihistamines (Calpol Nights, Medised, etc) is no longer available in the UK and US for under 6's. edited by Hello.Again.Kitty on 09/05/2011

Calpol 6+ has 250 mg per 5ml so you have given 500mg. The dose of paracetamol, is 15mg per kg of weight regardless of age. The dose you have given would be suitable for a child who weighed between 33 - 34 kg, so possibly double the dose she should have. Best to check with the doctor.

Its absolutely fine medicine is gauged by weight NOT age. It would be a different story if you had given this to a two year old.

By all means give the Dr a ring if it puts your mind at ease, but at 5 years old, she will be fine with a 6 year olds dose, especially if she is tall. The medicine does not know if a child is 5 years and 364 days old or 6 years and 1 day old... My sister's three year old is almost as tall and as heavy as her 6 year old, if anything the 6 year old should get 'younger' medicine. And before I get shot down, I know it has a lot to do with how well developed the child's organs are, but honestly, the difference between a 5+ child and a 6 year old is minimal and a one off slightly higher than average dose will not cause any major problems. If she had other health issues or was very small for her age or had managed to drink half the bottle then there may be cause for concern, but not the amount she has had. Hugs to you though, always a worry with kids.

Hi WDV, Yes she will be fine. I promise. I have done the same thing when one of my kids was recovering from surgery last year. I actually gave a double dose of Calpol followed by a double dose again only 3 hours later. I made the mistake of giving the second dose of Calpol again opposed to Nurofen which we were supposed to do. I should've alternated the Calpol with the Nurofen every 3 hours but due to shear exhaustion I grabbed the wrong bottle. Bless the Surgeon who was woken up in the middle of the night to a neurotic mother worried that I had just overdosed my child. I was reassured and felt so much better when he told me that everything would be fine. Your daughter will be fine as well. Don't panic, we are only human and mistakes are made. Hope she starts to feel better soon. SH

This is what it says on the label "An overdose of paracetamol is dangerous and capable of causing serious damage to the liver and kidneys. You should never exceed the dose stated in the information leaflet supplied with the medicine. Immediate medical advice should be sought in the event of an overdose with this medicine, even if your child seems well, because of the risk of delayed, serious liver damage." I would call a doctor and check if it were my child.
