They all seem to expect it to happen VERY quickly ...they seem to expect you to move in - eh, tomorrow! Also they don't seem interested in letting you see places if you are not in that category.

Did you feel panicked by the house finding process? ie the time pressure ....

did you feel that you end up jumping for something just because of time pressure and the need to get something? :\:

Your DH might have to go to DEWA to collect the old deposit, I have never closed an account here for anyone else so i can't help you there, I hope you still have the original deposit slip - I think they still insist on only paying out with that as proof!

Good point, CP! What do you need to get a new DEWA supply - copy of new contract and - anything else? They will transfer the deposit, right? Thanks. I haven't done this before on my own ( without company guy if you see what I mean. The old spoiled days! :D) You can try to transfer the deposit but I am not 100% certain it can be done at the same time - you might end up without a DEWA supply in either the old or new property, I would ask for a final bill when you are doing the new connection and see if you can close one and open the other. Copy of contract Ownership papers if property is in a freehold area with matching passport copy of owner Your passport/visa copies Apt AED 1000 deposit / Villa AED 2000 deposit Reconnection fee - normally AED 110 but I was charged AED 210 for a Palm villa on Thursday (I queried it and they told me it was a big meter!!!) ...............and time, the staff there work at their own pace. I have found DEWA in Discovery Gardens are quicker but they close at 3.30 and my office is by the Burj Khalifa so going there does not make much sense!! edited by Cornish Pixie on 01/10/2011 Oh sounds good! And hopefully that will get around the other question I have just posed about Have I ever paid housing fee? Yes I will need DEWA in 2 places for two days as I am not closing down old place until the day after I move to the new.

By everyone, you mean the owner and my husband as he is the one signing the lease? And the letter of authority is from my husband to me to allow me to do this? Sorry, I am dozy... Your DH does not need to give you a letter, I do them for all our new people and on average visit DEWA 3 x a week and have never been asked!

passport copies of everyone and if you are going to DEWA you'll need letter of authority to connect on behalf of whoever the contract's name is in

DEWA have become very poor at connecting the supply, it is frequently taking 3 days at the moment so don't delay getting that utility sorted out as the villa/apartment can not be cleaned well if there is no power/water!

no pressure - the hardest bit was finding a place within budget that we liked but once we did it all went smoothly and fairly quickly. There were a few items included that we didn't want, so the landlord arranged for them to be removed which took until a few days after we moved in but that was the only slight hiccup and wasn't really a problem...

I must admit I am also surprised that turnarounds here are so quickly. I've been advised by our agent that I should see stuff in the 4 weeks I have while our container is on the high seas and no point doing it before that. I'm doing a trip earlier to see DH and hope to see friend's apts and get a better sense of areas so we spend our time judiciously when we move at the end of the year.

But I thought it was an only in Dubai thing, so from your questions SM...maybe I thought wrong. edited by Sugarbeach on 26/09/2011 you have lost me at the end? We have not moved in YEARS here so all has changed.............

It seems that you can't plan a couple of months in advance here unless youre very lucky and find the place you like with current tenants moving out on or around the date you plan on moving in. And even if you do find just such a scenario, some other agent has likely rented the place out to someone else, LL will change their mind, current tenants will decide to stay on after all. Our moves tend to be made with a weeks notice. We know we plan to move on a certain date, it's just a matter of finding a place within the right price range, location, and it has to be sitting empty. We probably start looking around 4 to 3 weeks before the move date. Something always comes up...is it ideal? Probably not, but what is here? So with a few days to go, we sign it, seal it and then move. Did we get stressed about it? Not really...worked our little patoots off to get the move done though. It's not so much panic you feel with the time pressure, for us it's just pure frustration with the process, and then just saying, oh blow it...this will do. We don't own it, it'll never be perfect, it just has to tick as many boxes for us as possible. I think those are wise words! :)

Am doing this now SM - and we gave it 5-6 weeks - as we ended up with panic situations on previous moves with nowhere to go and a week til we had to get out so ended up making not so good decisions. Both villas we (or rather I) selected and DH subsequently vetoed worked within that timeframe and the 2nd one wanted longer. The villa we've finally gone for won't be ready til beginning of November so we're having to ask for an extension where we're currently renting. Just hope that what arohadxb is saying doesn't happen to us then :\: - although I hope not as we are using a fax agent.
