Hi ladies

I have 4 month old triplets and the docs have asked me to start giving them cereals. One of the pediatrician asked me to start with cornflour.i have heard that cornflour can be too thick for the babies stomach and can sometimes cause constipation.I have started today with apple.Another doc asked me to start bebelac rice also.am worried if bebelac/cerelac will cause allergies for my babies. Can anybody tell which cereals and brands are good for babies??
Moreover,i would like to know if i could give fruit juices to my babies at this stage???

Regards,
nicegirl

Cornflour is often used in 3rd world countries to feed babies. (I'm involved in an African charity) I'm very surprised that this would be suggested in a more affluent society. My dad loved flavoured cornflour as a pud mixed with jam! When I brought my babies up 30 years ago, 4 months was the age recommended for introducing solids. I know that ideas change with ongoing research of course. My mother had cows milk with sugar added at a few months old!!! She celebrated her 80th birthday last week so was none the worst for her toddler diet of bread soaked in hot sweetened milk. :)

I've fed all my kids before six months of age. I've seen so many fussy eaters and people struggling and there babies not wanting to eat because they start at 6 months old.n. I've seen the exact opposite. All the kids I know who were started at 4 months have real issues with food and the kids who started at 6 or later are very enthusiastic eaters (including mine). Probably the really important thing is starting when they are are physically ready and interested, not forcing them to eat before that, which will vary from child to child. There are other risks that come with early solids though which is why the guidelines are in place. Regardless of when you start, you need to start with nutrient dense foods, cornflour is not one of them and if you are not giving meat then you need to give something fortified, like baby rice. Meat is better though. <em>edited by kiwispiers on 22/06/2012</em>

If you start off with a tea spoon of rice then increase slowly by the time they are six months they will be taking vegetables and fruit easily as they know how to take it from the spoon.

I thought it was recommended to start solids at 6 months and not before, has this changed recently. no the WHO guidelines haven't changed, they recommend that if there is a deficiency before 6 months that it is preferable to supplement with vitamins rather than introduce any solids including cereal. I'm a bit worried about the advice these Drs are giving as it doesn't really make sense and could make the deficiency worse.

I thought corn flour was only used to thicken gravy. I can’t imagine that’s good for a tiny baby, baby rice would be better.

for vit D you need to give them either daylight exposure or vit D drops, its not really naturally found in any foods especially not in fruits and vegetables,so apple/banana is not going to help this at all. Apple/banana is also not going to help with their calcium levels so I really can't see why the Dr is telling you to give it??? By low HB do you mean low iron, again fruits/vegies re not going to help this and if they result intaking less BM/formula you wiil do more harm than good. Studies have shown that when babies are given solids before 6 months they tend to take less milk as a result. Breastmilk/formula is higher in all these nutrients than fruits so if you give fruit they are actually getting LESS of the very nutrients you are worried they are low in. I think you need to speak to someone who can give you a clearer answer of WHY you should give any of these foods and how they would benefit your babies, it sounds like you are being given some quite bad (and potentially dangerous since your babies have shown actual deficiencies) advice to be honest from both Drs. Perhaps try the Drs mentioned below who specialize in nutrition.

My babies are triplets and are on both BM and formula. They were born premature.Recent blood tests showed that they were lacking vit D and calcium and HB as BM is not enough for them and formula doesnt give them any nutrition. Moreover,my babies have started getting allergies due to formula milk.Hence the pediatrician suggested to start cereals. I was apprehensive about starting with cornflour and hence I took a second opinion and the 2nd pediatrician advised me to start with apple puree and banana puree and bebelac rice.she asked me to start the rest of the food only after 6 months. I was asked to exclusively breastfeed my babies for 6months which was not possible in any case.So I started formula. Moreover one of my boys is a refluxer.I guess (as kiwispiers mentioned) that might be the reason the doc asked me to start cornflour.

I would strongly suggest to change Dr's or get a second opinion from a Pediatric Specialist! I'm actually gob-smacked that a Dr advocated corn flower to a 4 month old :/: There a quite a few Pediatricans who specialize in nutrition - Dr Michael Loubser and Dr Sanja @ Infinity Health Clinic are very specialized in this field! As for sugar, fruit juice - that is a big NO-NO! My DD only started getting tasters of juice once she was over 1yr old! Some self reading if you wish... http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/solids.htm http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/feeding-infants-toddlers/starting-solids/6-reasons-delay-introducing-solid-food Great advise has been given in this post. And thanks very much for sharing these websites, I found them very very helpful!

do your babies have severe reflux? that is the only reason I can think why your Dr has suggested early solids and cornflour, not as a "food" but to thicken a bottle feed. This won't work with breastmilk by the way and you might want to read this; http://www.refluxbabies.co.uk/information/thickened-feeds-for-reflux.php?cat=2

Cornflour? Sounds like something from the 1940's!!! I would most definitely be seeking a second medical opinion... Are you sure they're ready for solids? 4 months is so young! I agree with the advice of kiwispiers & plumie... Do a bit more reading on weaning & definitely NO JUICE! Good Luck!

why have they asked you to start so early? cornflour has zero nutritional value, and is pure starch so very difficult for your baby to digest at this age. yes it is quite likely to cause constipation, but more so, if you fill your baby up with this you are reducing the amount of nutrients they will take in through milk which means less iron, less zinc, less calcium etc etc etc the fortified rices are marginally better only because they have vitamins added, still quite likely to cause constipation (btw apple can cause constipation too, is one of the things they recommend to help with diarrhea) Do you think your babies are ready for solids?

I would start off with baby rice mixed with there own milk formula or breast....then there are a few rice mixes with apple added from hipp organic or Heinz or bebelac.....thy come in boxes and most of them u mix with water or milk. I found there was more variety in spinneys. I weaned all my three kids from 4 months..just give a little and start to increase it. Then you can go on to purée apples peaches pears, mash banana, broccoli carrots..... Annabel karmal has written some great books with lots of ideas and recipes. She even has a website to help you out http://www.annabelkarmel.com/recipes I personally wouldn't give fruit juices.....just water, <em>edited by fairycakeyumm on 20/06/2012</em>
