i lost my iphone yesterday evening, and when we realized we called zillion times but nobody answered. Then we deactivated the sim since it was a post paid number with international calling activated. I tried using Find my iphone app but the phone has not been connected to the internet yet. Should i file a police complaint? Is that helpful in any way?

I am feeling so awful since yesterday, apart from being ridiculously expensive, it was a anniversary gift and it had so many pictures and videos of my 2 yr old (don't have back up of half of them :( ) i was carrying couple of bags, plus diaper bag and my bag, and DS had a little potty accident in his car seat.. over that i am 6 mnths pregnant.. While taking him out of the car and in this whole mess i think i dropped it, it was in the parking area outside our appt building.. all those hormones and i am not able hold back my tears :(

presam, i had a similar case recently and filled out the form in arabic (they have a special lost phone form?) with all the details etc, but went back and forwards a few times between police station and etisalat and never progressed - would you mind letting me know which police station you went to? Thanks :) we live in mamzar corniche area, Sharjah and we went to Buhairah polica station. They did give us a special lost/ stolen phone form where the questions were printed both in English and Arabic and the details like phone model, IMEI no etc had to be put in. They told us that they will notify both etisalat and du and whichever provider is used they will know. We had a du post paid sim that we dactivated after an hour or so of loosing the phone. Hope this helps!

Could you tell security etc that you would be offering a reward say 100/200 aed to anyone who finds it?It could be a lot of money for a poor labourer and guarantee the return of the phone, no questions asked. yes did that.. even sent couple of texts re rewards etc before we deactivated the sim.. Our assumption is its either some labourer/ poor guy or some teen who would have picked it up. Nonetheless I am prepared to wait and somehow feel that I will get it back. We even told police that we don't want anybody to be punished (to which he just smiled :) )..

I dont know where you lost your mobil but friday there was a man (looked like a labour) who tried to sell a white Iphone infront of the Dubai Marina Metro station. My husband ask him if he "found" the mobil anywhere conused the man and he run away. 2 hours later he came back to sell the phone. that is what the police said that such smartphones are sold 2-3 times before finally being used by someone. I just hope it doesn't leave the country... edited by presam12 on 25/06/2012

Oh you are so human so dont feel bad. I got a new phone for my birthday, went into a toilet cubicle the next day in MOE and put my bag on the shelf behind the loo and when I sat down the bag tipped over onto my head and I head 'plop' and I prayed ...."please not the phone, please not the phone" (my bag has a LOT of stuff in it which was all over the bathroom floor by that stage) and I stood up to see my new birthday present from Dh at the bottom of the loo. He couldnt believe it !! ouch!!

We went to the police and filed the complaint. Very politely he explained us the procedure that they will pass on the IMEI number to etisalat and du and whenever the phone is used, they will get to know. He told us it might take couple of days to couple of months but as long as it is used within the country we can track it. He also said sometimes such phones are sold 2-3 times before being used as they fetch good money. When I asked him what are the chances he said "inshallah 100%" and the way he said it gave me so much hope that I can't describe! Now I am praying for a miracle. I don't mind waiting but I really wish i get it back, it was anniversary gift from DH :( Nyranee: thanks for asking dear.. Homewardbound: no, it was a white phone and had pink case, thanks anyhow! everythingnice: i am hoping for something similar to happen with me too.

A friend of mine lost her phone at a bar here in Dubai and reported it to the police. Two months after (when all of us have already forgotten about the incident), police called her saying that the phone was retrieved. When she asked how, apparently, one of the customers returned it but the staff kept it. It took him two months to actually use the phone and when he did, the police tracked him. They said he spend one night in jail. Pretty impressive, but don't expect it to be back anytime soon. This was actually just last March and she got the call first week of June I think. So very recent.

there used to be a time where you opened a case at police for such things with the unique ID every phone comes with and they actually really tracked the theves down. Not sure if they stioll do it nowadays but maybe worth a try.

You'll need a police report in order to claim on your insurance, if you have a policy. Presam, you're only human, had a tough day and things like that happen to all of us. Write it off to experience, don't dwell on it and be nice to yourself. You're doing a tough job right now in this heat! x Thank you Mrs Bing for your kind, supportive words. Sadly we do not have policy but i was wondering if that phone goes on network and we do find out its location, do we need a police complaint to claim it back.. jut being over optimistic!
