Hi ladies, I wonder if someone could help me out please. We are in Dubai and I have a Dubai driving licence. My UK licence is about to expire and the DVLA say that i can't renew it as I am not living in the UK. Apparently I can drive in the UK on my Dubai driving licence.

Does anyone know if its ok to hire a car in the UK with a Dubai driving licence? Also, do you know how I can get my UK driving licence back when we go to live back in the UK? Hopefully not have to resit!

Thanks

x

We always use our UAE license in UK but use our UK license in other countries , is the UAE license excepted everywhere when you rent a car ? Yes but you need date of birth ID as that is not on your UAE driving licence so you need e.g. passport alongside.

( legality aside...) no you shouldnt as you are not legally resident. if you look at the renewal form, it states clearly that you are resident in the uk, ie living in the uk. people do do it if they have a house or use another address, but technically its illegal. they do check up now if you read the information they can look at tax records etc etc to check whether you are in the country, if you renew with an upto date passport photo from your passport then they have that information when you are in and out of the country etc... i know people who didnt realise and got into trouble edited by busybee2 on 12/05/2013 hence my bit in brackets...........

Most of the bigger car rental places in the UK will insist on an holding International Driving License. It will be connected to your UAE one, but probably easier for them to deal with. Very easy to get (as went through this last year and about to do it again for when we're home in the summer). Pop down to the driving licence place by Mall of Emirates on SZR with your passport, ID card, passport photo and UAE Driving Licence. I think the cost is approx.150AED? There will be forms to fill in there, then take up to the relevant desk and they will do there and then. Easy! My parent's have managed to insure me on their car, with the insistence I'm holding an International Driving Licence. It will last one year. NEVER needed one - use my UAE licence all the time in case of getting a ticket and getting points on it.

You can ONLY drive a car in UK on your UAE licence. If you use any other licence your insurance will be invalid! There have been several previous threads about this. As far as I know it is very simple to renew your UK licence as soon as you are resident back in UK. You MUST insist hire companies use your UAE licence ( some smaller companies will try to tell you they need your UK not UAE one but they are wrong! And insurance will not pay out if you have used a UK one.) this is correct. you can only use your uae licence for use in the uk, technically the rta here should send back to dvla any foreign licence, as you are transferring it here, there is no issue with getting it back once you return to live in the uk, you just fill out the correct form, and they will send you a new one. you should not use a uk address to renew if you are not living there, people do, as they are worried they will be fined if their photocard expires, but as a non resident you will not be fined you are not allowed to renew your licence as you do not live there. you will not need to do a test again! i have used my uae licence many times in the uk and the rest of the world not a problem at all. if you were to use your uk licence in the uk, and were to have an accident you will not be covered by insurance, but even if you ask the hire companies they may well say the uk one is ok, but they are not the ones necessarily sure of the rules, and they wont be the one paying your bill for you when it all goes wrong. if you were worried you should have renewed it before you left the uk as technically you were resident etc.
