Can anyone share their upgrade experience with skywards platinum membership? Are you likely to be upgraded if you book an economy ticket or are upgrades rare? Thanks

My hubby been platinum for the last 2 or 3 years and got upgraded once. Only loyal because of the extra weight allowance.

But if it's so difficult to upgrade with miles, which it seems to be, what's the point of being loyal? edited by Geordie expat on 05/04/2015 For me, the lounges are a huge plus. I like to get to the airport early, shop, then relax in the lounge until my flight. Plus, being based in Dubai and traveling a lot, there are direct flights nearly everywhere I need to go. To be honest I'm getting better value with my UAE Airmiles card and I get lounge access with my mastercard. The most annoying thing is that I can't use my airmiles and ten to one they'll expire before I get the chance

What is the annual fee on the NBD platinum card? Is it 700 dhs? Is the Emirates Islamic equiv better? HC, 700 is the annual fee for the ENBD Platinum, yes, and often they will waive the first year fee. There is miles accrual with that one, but there is another ENBD credit card that has a buy in of 3000 dhs which makes you Emirates Silver status for life--or as long as you have the card, cant remember.

Thanks for letting me know. That is a bit rubbish. My husband was upgraded from Gatwick to Dubai last summer when he had gold membership so I was hoping it was a bit of a regular thing when you reach platinum. How disappointing! I am Platinum and do not expect an upgrade - I pay for it if required - how disappointing? Goodness gracious - what has the world become when you're not upgraded for free...... I'm with you, I also pay for business class when I want it, and agree it is a little silly to expect upgrades no matter what level Skywards membership someone has. I think that Emirates flights used to be overbooked more often before they added more routes and flights per day to certain destinations. Which is why in recent years past more people got upgraded; it was a function of an overbooked flight. My gripe is that it never used to be so difficult to upgrade, and I don't recall that it cost so many miles to do so. My company doesn't always fly me business (not saying "oh poor me!" just saying). However they always purchase the economy fare that allows us to upgrade with our own miles or own money if we wish. This last trip I took, the upgrade cost was much higher than normal, and they couldn't do it in advance, I could only inquire once checked in to see if it was viable. Maybe it is always like this for certain flights? I just don't recall it ever being like this. If the area is an upgrade with miles however, I have heard so many instances (one of which a woman screaming at check in for a refused upgrade for free because of beng a gold member beggars belief). Jumeirah Jane springs so much to mind. You want an upgrade - pay for it!!! Do these people believe that airlines exist for their free benefit? edited by JEAHH45 on 05/04/2015

I've never been higher than silver, but in 2012-2013 I was upgraded to business on a couple of flights. Both regional, and a couple to New York. I am wondering too, if their policy has changed with this. I think it is true, it is harder to upgrade with miles now. Upward of 50,000 miles on some routes and often--it is not even an option.

6 years ago I was gold (which was the top at that time) and got upgraded almost every time when I flew economy (however 3 out of every 4 trips were business class anyways). Things changed a LOT at emirates since. To the worse.

I have only been offered upgrade when economy was full. If it is empty and you are platinum they wont upgrade you. It is getting harder but as you are the top tier you may have better luck than Gold/Silver etc

I've never been upgraded on a complimentary basis because of my status. It's even getting more difficult to "pay" for an upgrade using miles. Beginning to think it's not really as good a reward scheme as it used to be sadly. Won't stop us flying Emirates though..
