I have been asked to buy my niece books for Xmas but haven't a clue where to start. She is 10 yrs old and a good reader but doesn't like the Enid blyton books. Any ideas on what books would be appreciated. TIA

Hi. You should check out www.book-walrus.com which is a book reviewing website aimed at 9-12 year olds and the reviewers are mainly kids! Dubai based people who run it and it's great.

Agree with a lot that has been recommended my daughter absolutely loves Jacqueline Wilson, but yes the subject matter is not always great, but to be honest at 10 it is only a couple of years younger than I was when I was reading Judy Bloom's more racey books! As a gift I'd play it safe and choose some of Michael Morpurgos books, they are amazing stories with great vocabulary and age appropriate without being remotely childish. I don't think you could go wrong with one of his books (well maybe not Private Peaceful ..as my daughter stopped reading that one as she found it too upsetting!)

If you really want to do her a favor, get her a book listed on www.amightygirl.com. It's a website that lists toys and books for girls that aren't pink, princessy ****. The books they list have strong female protagonists that do not need a male hero to rescue them or dream of marrying a prince. I love that site. Most of the books I listed have a strong, active female protagonist :)

Thank you everyone for taking the time to respond, I now have so many options. Think I am going to go and sit in a book store and work my way through the list and see which ones I think will appeal to her. Might have to buy a few of those for myself, quite a few there I didnt read as a child

Michael Murpurgo writes beautifully. Im not keen on Jacqueline Wilson either but she is very popular. Our school uses this programme http://www.arbookfind.co.uk/collections.aspx and there's a section of " what kids are reading". Children can read the book and then answer questions about it.

It depends a bit on whether you're buying for a child in Year 5 or Year 6 (UK), so started the academic year as 9 and has turned 10 or started it as 10 and will turn 11 before June. The White Giraffe series (4 books) by Lauren St John Sky Hawk and White Dolphin by Gill Lewis (if she's the older age group, I'd recommend Moon Bear too, but the subject matter isn't for the overly sensitive) Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy, if she's not too girly, it mixes magic/fantasy/fairly gentle horror Road to London by Barbara Mitchelhill The Considine Curse and The Thornthwaite Inheritance by Gareth P Jones Ingo and the rest of the series by Helen Dunmore, if she's at the older end. If you post what she does like, I can narrow it down a bit for you! It might be worth asking her parents before buying Jacqueline Wilson. I know that her books are popular but they cover topics that not all parents want their children to know about. They are also pretty relentless. I have a 10 year old and I'm not keen on her reading them for the content and the style of writing. If she likes those kinds of books, maybe try Ellen Caldecott as she has a lighter touch.

These are mostly series, you can give her the first book to start with, she might get hooked. The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry -- it's a quartet so there are 4 books in the series. It's a real good read. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Claire The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini

http://www.scholastic.com/bookwizard/ This website is useful - it helps pick books by age/grade/reading level.

My ten year old loves the Dairies of a Wimpy Kid series and anything from Goosbumps (that's creepy series for kids). She is starting now with the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books. Though no feed back on that yet.

Tazmin, I think amazon have a book list for relevant ages so just do a search on books for 10 year olds. Ok, so I just googled and its a book list for ages 9-11 and is very comprehensive. You wouldn't have to buy from them just use it as a guide. I have been fancying the David Walliams ones for a few weeks now. edited by DesertRose1958 on 18/12/2013 I used the amazon search option before posting on here, I just got slightly overwhelmed by the 75 pages of options :-) Lol. Ok. I would narrow it down by just choosing one of the first books that isnt part of a series, an independent author so to speak, just to be different and encourage independence.

Also, when I was younger I loved it when I got a gift certificate for a bookshop so I could choose the books myself. But then again, my uncles were clueless on what to get me. One of them once got me a Britannica set @ age 11 :') edited by Gentle on 18/12/2013

I love all the Burnett books too. I also loved Lucy Montgomery's books especially Anne of Green Gables. On another note, my cousins have been raving about "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series- they seem to have quite a following.

I would not recommed Judy Blume for a 10 year old. Some of her books are quite advanced. Yes, and some are not. The "Fudge" books are perfect for this age group. edited by Sakhifa on 18/12/2013

Anything by Shel Silverstein - I enjoy reading his simple stories and poetry even as an adult. Judy Blume is also great. You could always ask her parents if she's interested in any specific genres or series.
