We quite often have 'bring your dregs' blender parties, where everyone brings those half bottles of stuff you never drink lying around the house, and we see what cocktails can be made out of them - always a treat. Plus taking a bottle as courtesy is totally different to be being 'greedy'. Seriously, would you walk into a strangers home, where you've not been invited, eat all their food, take things that aren't meant for you then naff off again? edited by Chocs01 on 08/03/2011

Yes you can, in this multicultural society people will put it down to culture.

Nothing wrong in taking a bottle, we do this all the time, and vice versa, friends do the same.

it is the same as going to an adult party and being asked to bring your own drinks lol F that. I can sit at home with my own entertainment. That's totally different. At a dinner party it is customary for guest to 'bring a bottle'. I would never dream of turning up to a friends house without taking something with me and neither would any of my mates. It's just common courtesy. edited by Chocs01 on 08/03/2011

Back where I come from a child would get a school class invite only, I would stop her off a pick her back up, her sister wasnt never invited, not sure why its so different here, unless it was a family birthday then all the children would be there. You must remind yourself where you are ! As you live in a multicultural environment with kids classmate at school named" third generation kids" being sensitive of mix custom /culture is common sense. Where I am from the city is filled with people/children from different cultures, religious backgrounds and beliefs, its not just here we have this. Maybe things have changed since my kids were small. When in Rome Do as the Romans Do Spot on - feed the siblings to the lions and see how many turn up un-invited to the next party. :D

As someone mention it's a clash of cultures... For most Arabs ,invites addressed and limited to a member of the family don't exist as they will never cross their mind the host may count/care how many mouthfuls they sallow! For them a invite is a invite for the whole family and most of them don't know what RSVP stands for ! A friend of mine been invited first time to a home dinner meal to a Bulgarian family ,and was shocked to see the menu present at the diner table to entertain 6 guest ...To her it was enougf to satisfy one not 6 pers. Later on they traveled together to Bulgaria where on arrival there the ex host announce theat her mother invited them for dinner at her house! As my friend was very hungry and knew what to expect ask the host if they can stop by the supermarket as she need a personal item . She bought some snacks to make sure she will not sleep in a empty stomach ! The original poster was interested to hear others views and opinions on the subject..i give mine and been insulted and hanged ! And regarding manners you have bad apples in all cultures /country/societies ! Here is a example of bad apple from the english culture: After playing in the park for few hours with other girl my daughters in leaving they wish her farewells ..This little girl of 5 to 6 years old give them a look and said theat she is not going to tell them by as those are not her friends because are not english as her ???!!!:\:

To freeload or not to freeload, that is the question whether tis nobler in the mind to sponge the nuggets and pizza of outrageous fortune or to have manners and be polite and teach your child some manners.... How poetic.

I've read some of the replies. I would say that no siblings please are fine if you're hosting an expensive party in lets say Ski Dubai, Wild Wadi or something like that. If you're doing it at home it just seems tight. I only invite people I know and always invite siblings as well. After all it's a family affair. Gee thanks, because I personally spend a fortune (and am happy to) on my duaghters birthday parties....I LIKE parties, I LIKE that the children have the best time and I LOVE that they are in my garden, games made by me, food made by me and friends and it is still a very expensive enterprise. Who cares? Is not about the money ever ( though I tanty every year over it and threaten lil miss with diamonds instend of party) it's about COURTESY. If you are asked to RSVP...do so. If you are bringing siblings....ask the HOSTESS. SHE will feel like shyte if she cannot provide every child with a treat or a prize, she will feel like **** if she has not catered for them all, she will feel like **** if your univited sibling has an accident, or cannot be cared for because you effed off, and YOU will blame her if the worse happens and something bad happens to your kid. A Little sense ladies please, it's not about who is generous or not...by all means, my loved ones can walk in and help them selves to my whole house...but this is a KIDS party, and their are parents taking the micky and it has nothing to do with 'culture'. IMHO of course.

I wouldn't mind siblings coming to a party, but then again, I don't go for the big, organised parties and do everything myself, so keep numbers manageable... and always tend to over-cater, so a few extra mouths isn't an issue. My two aren't of an age where I consider it fair to just leave them at a party. Personally, my idea of h3ll would be having to entertain 15-20 kids on my own, so if anything I'd be more upset at the parent leaving than bringing a sibling! I'm also not into inviting everyone the kids have ever met and hold no store on super presents. If anything, I'd prefer people to not bring a present, rather than a token one (anyone taking note?! I know you're out there! ;) ). I think I'm also going to start resurrecting the party bags of my childhood - a slice of birthday cake, wrapped in a napkin and put in the bag... and that was it, I think. Maybe a mini-pack of Smarties to go with it... and believe me, I thought it was special! Parties shouldn't be about getting your money's worth, or getting the value of the party back in presents' worth. It's celebrating the birth of your child with friends and family. That's it. Either you want to do it or you don't. Anyhow, yes, your party, your rules. End of.

SM, your posts are usually one of the most sensible ones. But do you not think at calling people freeloaders for some nuggets and pizza is a tad bit overboard? It's exactly what I would call it. How else would one describe people who 'expect' to have non-invited children [or other guests'> fed at the host's expense? If an invitation specifically invites A child, just the one, to a party, does that then follow that any and all siblings are included into the mix? Certainly, this thread is exposing some interesting cultural differences, but -- it's been repeated and REPEATED in this thread: host has final say on how the party is to be run, who is to be invited, what is being fed etc etc ... and it's simply not fair to expect an open-door policy, particularly when there are issues of space and time and supervision and, yes, finances. :)

Celebrating birthdays is frowned upon by the very religous. They believe that Prophet's birthday is the only birthday to be celebrated. Recently, I heard a scholar speak on the topic of birthdays and the Prophet's birthday in particular and he repeated a very interesting tradition: the Prophet did not used to celebrate his birthday with a feast but with a fast to show Allah his gratitude.
