Claire's Accessories often have bits for animal costumes, I have built up a supply by buying them in the sales. Best buys were wings for a bumble bee and an angel for AED 1 each.

thank you all for your help! I went to Party Zone in Dubai mall and they had bumblebee wings and a headband with feelers for 70dhs - not too bad, I didnt have time to be creative and make them myself! They had other costumes too, as well as a full bumblebee outfit with striped tights and everything for 190dhs

I just bought a bag of dress up cloths from a lady leaving dubai. It has loads of stuff for girls. Fairy, princess, monsters, witches, capes, haram pants, belly dancing stuff, dutch girl, thai girls etc etc.....my kids love playing with them (age group 5-10). I am happy to lend items out...though we do live in Sharjah and so would expect it to be picked up.

Just found this old thread in my search for ideas for DD's dress up day next week! If anyone has a bumble bee costume/shirt/anything for a 1.5 year old I'd greatly appreciate it :)

I do Harry potter every year .. basically I had an old tie from my high school that I kept which is the same colour as the griffandor house and I purchased a wand from Ebay.. ( it’s a small investment ) so all I do is make a cape using black fabric with a button on the front to close it .. my son wears his normal black trousers, white shirt and black shoes, I purchased some plastic round black spectacles without the lenses from carrefore for 50 fils or 1 aed during Halloween and I draw the scar on his forehead with brown eyeliner and Voila ! I have Harry P …ive done this for 3 years now ! kids honestly forget ! we had a pirate theme in our school as well so made the hat out of black paper and stapled it together and painted a scull with white paint, I stapled lots of pieces of wool to look like long hair on the back. sent him wearing a white shirt and brown shorts and a waistcoat and then loads of black eyeliner so he looks like Johnny Depp from Pirates of the Carribean ! I refuse to spend money on a costume that he is not going to wear. I have sent him to school once wearing a big white sheet with 2 holes cut out for his eyes ! my mum did with me as well ! I have a friend who send her daughter in a flowery shirt and a grass skirt and fabric flowers around her neck and head as a Hawaiian theme ! cheap and cheerful x

I think that Mr Bens is obscenely overpriced. Much better to attempt to knock up something yourself. A costume swap is a fabulous idea.

if it's for kids under 10 years of age the discount stores like Al Kabayal in Deira stock all kinds of costumes for 30-50dhs each... worth a look... but for kids who are older ur gonna find it tough to find a cheaper option... ur looking at a minimum 180-250dhs at any of the party stores (Party Centre) or Mr. Ben's

Been to the costume shops on beach road and no luck ......they only get new stock once a year apparently so you need to know in september what you are going to need and buy in bulk. But I am fed up of spending a fortune on these days . So if anyone wants to join in a costume exchange let me know

My DS's are all growed up 15 and 13 and no longer have to go through the dressy up bit anymore - phew! But when they did, we threw together outfits with stuff that we had round the house or I made it....you can pick up off bits of fabric at the tailors in Satwa and basically tack something together....then when finished unpick and throw back in the fancy dress box for the next occasion. It doesn't take that long and to be quite honest we used to have a right old larf all 3 of us and sometimes DH had to step in and help. If you can't find time to make yourself - again go to the tailors in Satwa....they do not charge alot....I just had outfits made for me and my chums for the International stand @ DESC in November last (bathing belles) for the England "oh I do like to be beside the seaside theme" and all together each outfit cost 185dhs that is bathing bonnet, blouses and trousers....brilliantly stitched and we WILL have to use them again sometime hahahaha Have fun coz I actually really miss all this now.....sadly....

With you on that one too. But how do you manage to pay Dhs60 for a costume? The mermaid costume I'm looking for, that is miraculously sold out all over Dubai, was selling for Dhs250! Great! Costumes are cheap at those large discount supermarkets in Al Rigga. I bought a UAE national outfit with flags and all for 25 dhs and he looked great. Saw princess, pirate, policeman etc. there too.

60 dhs is minimum, Having a sewing machine helps. Found that the older they get the more expensive it gets too. Poor son has a pirate costume that started out as trousers but over the last 4 years has grown into shorts, Had to replace top when the sleeves started reaching his elbows. For a boy that doesn't care to much how he looks he did give me a stare that said "You cannot be serious" I'm a Bad Bad Mother ;)

The amount of costumes my 3 nieces have to have to go to school in, I asked my sister the other day - "Do they actually ever wear the uniform?"

Dress up days are my all time most detested days, As soon as I see the slip from school I start growling! This year we've had Roman day, Space day, Rock Star day, International day, UAE day, Red day, Black day, Green day, Pink day, Easter Bonnet day, Pirate day, Under Water day Plus Plus Plus.... Drives me insane that I have to fork out at least 60 dhs to get an outfit together. Then kids have to bring in min 5 dhs donation for charity for wearing stupid clothes that they will never wear again and will have outgrown by next year!!! Really wish school would just ask for the donation, They would collect so much more money if we didn't have to get dumb outfits GRRRR with you on that one :)

Yes 'cos they won't put up with any cr@ppy old cobble together then. Tea towel on the head is no longer acceptable.

And then there's World Book Day dress up, and pajama day where you can't just send them in their skanky old ones, and class assembly where you have to come up with a giraffe at 24 hours notice, and haloween, and then the christmas (winter?) play................. It's great fun :D

How many costumes do you have to find in a school year for all the dress up days they have ? I am in the process of searching for yet another costume without any success. Maybe we could start a swap system . Anyway if anyone has any of the following we are looking for Tudor costumes for year 5, Victorian costumes for year 5 and Roman for year 2. Please
