do they not have vicks cough medicine or something with menthol and camphor and all that kind of stuff to sooth a cough and sore throat? I've asked several dr's and pharmacists on several occasions and all I get given is ivy leaf extract or last time they prescribed me medicine to treat a cough, but it's "highly addictive" so use sparingly!! One of my girls has a bad cough (again) and I just don't know what to give her to sooth it!!

Melrosum is a syrup of thyme extract, amazingly efficient and very gentle to the body. Manuka Honey, UMF 10+ or 15+ is also a fabulous natural remedy

sprinkle the olbas oil on her pillow so she will inhale it through the night. I am a big fan of Olbas oil it really helps when my little boy has a conjested chest. can't beat a big spoon of honey too. hope she feels better soon.

half teaspoon honey & pinch turmeric powder, mix well & give it to your dd before going to bed. It really works for kids & adults too.

I too avoid cough syrup for my boys and try to use natural remedies. If its a dry cough, then try gently boiling cloves (3-4) in half cup of water for a few min. Remove the liquid into a cup. Mix 1/4 cup warm milk with a few drops of the clove liquid and some honey and give to your child twice a day. A tsp of honey with pinch of freshly ground pepper also works wonders. I also switch to lukewarm water for the kids to drink whenever they have a cough as it just soothes the throat. I hope your daughter feels better soon.

Honey to soothe the throat and Calpol if she's in pain or has a fever. Cough medicines are not recommended for anyone any more, certainly not for children. ETA: How old is she? There are cough medicines that may be 'OK' for over 4's but all they do is mask the symptoms. You're really best to see a good GP if she's really suffering and find how to treat the cause. edited by Green-ish on 12/01/2012

I'm not sure if they have vicks cough medicine here, we did get a menthol mild children's cough syrup a while ago called Dulsana but I don't think it really helped my daughter's caugh. Last time one of my children had a really bad cough we got her Prospan which has Ivy Leaves and it really did work. We rarely give our children cough medicine and try honey and lemon, vics, olbas etc first but as her cough was really bad I gave her prospan and her cough improved very quickly.
