Morning,

I know this question gets asked all the time but after searching I can't find anyone who has the same villa as ours to compare our stupidly high dewa bill to... So here goes...

We are in Al Reem 1 in a 3 bed plus study plus maids room (the one with a separate entrance) it's an end villa so with the larger style garden (I think it's a 2e). We only moved in in June and are averaging 3500aed per month on DeWa with the vast majority of that being electricity! It's only me, dh and a dog in the house so I have no idea how we are spending that much!! I've checked the metres and it is the right consumption!

Is anyone in the same style villa and how much is your bill?

When we were in mirador type 17, our bill was consistently 4000-5000 AED

We live in a 1m in Reem 2, our latest DEWA bill was AED700. There are 3 of us living here and we have the a/c on in 2 bedrooms all night. The a/c downstairs is put on if we get hot then when the room is cool/cold we turn it off. We have found keeping the blinds/curtains closed in the day keeps the heat out. Also ours is mostly electricity. Thankfully we don't have a large garden. Will be glad when it's time to turn it off!!

We finally broke down and bought fans for each room so we could turn the a/c up and reduce our bill. It's helped tremendously.

When I was at uni in Edinburgh, my flatmate used to sleep with the window open whereas I've scarcely ever opened a window in my life. Generally, if I consider the temperature 'comfortable' (not warm, just comfortable) then other people will be sweating!!

The trouble with me is I can't sleep unless my room is cold. Really, really cold. When I lived in the mountains of Central Asia, I kept the windows open while the snow came down! So I keep my air conditioning on pretty high all night.

I use my bedroom AC for about an hour in the morning while I'm getting ready for work and it was on about half the time during the night in July, not at all in August. I hardly ever use it in the sitting room, maybe an hour in the evening, but that wouldn't be every day and not at all now it's cooling down. If I felt hot then I'd switch it on as I'm not particularly parsimonious, however haven't I haven't really found I need it that much!

You do realise that we are paying the equivalent of more than $1000 US dollars a month in DEWA bills? Each of us? Is that not a truly insane amount? Our July bill gave DH a heart attack since it was more than our mortgage on the home we own in the US. Part of our problem too was the gardener washing down all the patios and garage and turning our sprinkler on 3 times per day. After talking to him and telling him our DEWA bill amount and watching his jaw drop open, he's since stopped messing with our water.

We are in The Lakes and live in the equivalent to a 1E in the Ranches. Our bills are maximum AED 1600 excluding our housing fee, in the winter they drop to AED 350-500. There are just 2 of and a dog but my DH works from home so at least one AC is on all the time!

We're in Umm Suqeim and our monthly DEWA has never gone above 1500 and that's for the prime summer months. In the winters it drops to as low as 500. I swear, hearing about all these huge bills in the Ranches and Meadows makes me think that DEWA has a secret policy of randomly targeting houses in those communities and stacking them with huge bills. They can't do that in Barsha or Jumeria because a random selection would affect too many locals. Haha I was saying the exact same thing to my dh the other day as certain areas seem to get a high bill at the same time :@

We're in Al Reem so maybe it is different - I have a friend in Saheel so i'll ask her if they have an auto option on theirs.

I think I'll move my villa to Ji or Umm Suqieum, I swear its the Ranches and there's a secret surcharge which is added on too, I used to live in AlBarsha with a HUGE garden, left a/c's every ect and it was only 2,000dhs a month, here its insane no idea why. I have a smallish garden (but it is grass and lots of trees, plants ect) I do have a pool and my villa is 5 bed but still!!!! I forgot to add 9,000 less the housing fee so about 7thousand!! but I would say it averages ouit at around 5/6 a month grrrrrrrrrrr

Sarah where in the Ranches do you stay. We're in Saheel. Just wondering if the different developments have different AC units. If not, I desperately need to find out how to put mine on AUTO!!!

Kind of comforting we are not the only ones I guess but still it is a ridiculous amount to pay. I thought most of our cost would be water but it is the electricity and apart from the ac we don't consume that much so I can only think that the ac units are not running as effectively as they could. KellsBells ours are on auto and only switch on when the room gets below a certain temperature.... not sure how we set it that way but the fan comes on and off! We still have a crazy bill though and I think it is because there are 5 external doors in the downstairs of the house which all allow heat and humidity through the seals of them. I'm just hoping they drop drastically when the cooler weather comes and we can switch the AC off otherwise we have an electricity consuming gremlin in the house - perhaps DEWA will claim the dog goes round switching all the lights on whilst we are out! :)

Ladies I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is a ludicrous amount. We do have a big garden to water but surprisingly it was our electricity that was stupidly high. We have never payed more then 2000dhs prior to moving to the Ranches. Something that concerns me, the A/C's. In all our old villa's there was an option to set the A/C's to an auto mode. Which meant they would come on and off as required, to keep the room at the selected temperature. However it seems these LG units only have the option to blow continously, now I don't know if it's the reason our electricity consumption was so high, but in my mind it surely can't be as cost effective. And it drives me nuts to have the fan blowing continously. Bring on the winter when they can all be switched OFF!!!!

I'm pretty staggered by these costs too...I have a large 4 bed plus maids room in Um Suqiem (shared pool and garden irrigation included in the rental though). My bills are about 250-300 in winter and 600-750 in summer and I think that must be because I don't use the AC much. One of things I love here is that I'm never cold whereas in the UK I was in a permanent shiver from Sept to June, with bills of 1200 GBP per quarter (gas and elec only!).

Wow, these costs you are quoting are ludicrous. I live in Jumeirah Islands, 4 bed plus maids (pretty large villas - if you know them) I have an irrigation system & pool - included on the DEWA bill is my housing which is 1,084 and I my bill this month is 2,600 includes housing fee. In the winter it can be around 1,500 a 1,600 a month. It's just the two of us and our dog. We are very sensible with the A/C like turning it off when not in certain rooms etc. and our irrigation comes on 3 times a day. My DH and me for that matter would not think that 5,000 a month is fair price to pay!

Dito, we live in Saheel 3 bed and pay about 3500-4500 a month and there's only 2 of us plus one dog. Thinking of getting rid of some of the grass as our water consumption is high and think the sprinklers have a lot to do with it.

When we lived in Al Reem two years ago, our bill averaged 2400 -2700 dirhams. Since then, they've massively increased the cost of DEWA, so it seems about right to me.

If I told you ours was 9,000dhs!!! would that make you feel better? We were away noone here except for 3 dogs, but my gardener keeps messing with the sprinklers and so sky high water bill! plus had on 2 A/C's all the time but still... its these crazy exytra charges they KEEP adding on, our dewa bill nearly adds up to a uk minimum wage yearly salary.... totally insane oh and we don't leave everything on either ... >:( Sorry I'm not in the same villa but its maddness really. edited by JShepherd on 07/09/2011
