No problem Doubting Thomas - wish we could afford to fly Business! Busybee2 - The whole point is that Emirates offered a better service than the other airlines by allowing sports equipment free. That has been taken away so the only advantage of flying Emirates is............. One of the best safety records in the world, if not the best, best maintained planes, extremely well trained pilots (best) great food, hardly ever suffer big delays (unlike another regional I could mention) great code share partners, excellent air miles program, great service on board and ground, fantastic lounges, new planes, competitive fares. I have to disagree about Emirates' service. I have recently flown to Bangkok and we suffered a massive delay here in Dubai and were left to sit on the apron while the fault was fixed and another delay again leaving Bangkok (both due to technical issues). As a result of leaving Thailand late, we missed our landing slot at DXB and had to stack for around 45 minutes. We were massively late back and many, many passengers on both flights missed their connections. I also have to disagree about the service. Whilst the ground and air staff are truly excellent (it was like herding cats for them on the flight back from Bangkok), the food and beverage service in economy (I don't fly business either!) has been pared back. I didn't eat either hot meal in or out of Dubai and I would have at least expected coffee, orange juice and a croissant prior to landing in Dubai at 3.30am. Their prices are also extortionate for what is no longer a premium airline and I fail to see the attraction of this airline anymore. If you fly a lot and not in economy, then yes, I guess the perks are good but for joe public, Emirates is no better than any other airline and I will now chose my carrier based on timings and price and if this means going to AUH, we are only 50 minutes away.

I was talking about this issue with the cleaner in our building who earns 400 dhs a month and hasn't seen his family in three years. He was just as shocked, and agreed that if he ever earned enough money to fly Emirates, he wouldn't, just to make a point. Is this a poor attempt at being humorous? Or are you trying to make one of your points?

Well BA small print says sporting equipment including golf bags will be included in the checked allowance, so anything extra to this is a bonus, but you wouldn't bank on it. And it's not about how often I would fly with golf clubs, I've never been on a golf holiday and never would! But as it happens I just travelled with my two DS's sets. And my husband regularly takes his clubs if he's away for work in SA where he stays in a golf estate. Even if I was travelling once a year with them, (as is the case with ski equipment) if it's a service they've previously offered for many many years then it's a loss when they take it away. And as I live in Dubai, I definitely don't want to switch to Etihad. why not switch to ey if it works out they have free bus... but i understand i dont want to come to dxb if there is no choice... its a real pain having to do that 1.5 hour trip up and down the road..... but i much prefer auh airport (non etihad) than dxb as its much much smaller. i can understand people with ski stuff tho!

That has been taken away so the only advantage of flying Emirates is............. no all scheduled airlines did golf clubs free of charge, klm, luftansa, virgin, ba etc etc they always have done.... thats the different from scheduled and charter. They don't - KLM golf bags INCLUDED in baggage allowance , it actually says on their website "You can bring a set of golf equipment instead of a suitcase"! Same with Lufthansa and BA. Virgin is the only one I can find that now lets you carry a golf bag as extra for free. As Scaralax says this was a huge perk of travelling with Emirates alongside the 30kg alowance in economy. i have travelled many times with ba in the past and golf clubs always been included as free. how often do you go on holiday with your golf clubs unless you are on a golfing holiday?! i have never tried with the others, but they are all scheduled airlines and in the past they always carried them for free. well if you are getting 30kg as free allowance on emirates thats more than the normal ba allowance of 23kg etc so you are quids in anyways. all you need is a travel light golf bag and it will fit they arent that heavy. i always check the small print before i buy anything, just in case things change.... which we know happens quite a lot in the muddle east.

Just spotted this under their FAQ: Golf equipment For tickets issued on or after 1st March 2014, a golf bag may be carried as part of your free checked baggage allowance and will be subject to excess baggage charges if overweight. For tickets issued prior to 1st March 2014, one set of golf clubs and one pair of golf shoes may be carried free of charge per passenger in any class of service on any Emirates flight. Passengers who carry a second set of golf equipment will be charged normal excess baggage fees if it exceeds the baggage allowance.

Just because you didn't know about it doesn't mean it shouldn't have happened! It has been a much appreciated extra making it worth being loyal to Emirates. And sorry - we can't afford to fly business. sorry, I didn't mean it like that !! lol - just that we never bothered to check..and I've never flown business either...

When my husband travels with his skydiving gear we include it in our normal allowance - it never occurred to us that it would be allowed free....All this time he didn't know Emirates allow sporting equipment to travel free !! lol Sorry but I don't really see why it should be... if you want the extra allowance you could always travel business - the baggage allowance is huge... most airlines allow certain sporting equipment free, its all in the terms and conditions.

I think it's very frustrating when a company takes something away like this Not even the mighty Emirates is immune from the effects of increasing aviation fuel costs. Think of it as a bonus that they didn't charge you extra for heavy items like bags of golf clubs for so long.

We had no idea until we just travelled with two sets of golf clubs, luckily we had enough allowance between the four of us including the clubs but with only 1kg to spare. The check in lady told us the policy had changed. I then looked at their policy and indeed it has. This is going to limit us hugely next time we go skiing though, as we all have our own skis, ski boots and helmets - we'll have no allowance left for anything else! I'm glad we discovered this now and not on our next ski flight. I think it's very frustrating when a company takes something away like this. <em>edited by Scribs on 19/04/2014</em>

I'm not sure how they made the announcement but it does apply to all tickets purchased after 1st March. We travelled with them during April but luckily we bought our tickets back in October so the new rules did not apply. It will certainly make us think if taking golf clubs is worth the extra cost. Just as a rough guide the set of golf clubs we took weighed almost 14kg.....you could possibly reduce this if you take out extra golf balls and have a lighter/smaller bag but it won't make a huge difference.

Thank goodness you spotted that. We have traveled with Emirates every summer for years with at least one set of golf clubs which has never been included in the weight allowance. We would have rocked up again this July and got a huge and horrible surprise.
