Great Dane neglect...can anything be done?

Im looking after a dog in falcon city, and the neighbours have a Great Dane. This poor dog was tied up outside the gate this morning, with only the little shade of the car to hide in. He didnt have any waterand he was panting quite a lot. I went over to see him and he seemed quite shy, but eventually came round.
An hour later, he had been brought in to the garage and tied up there with a bowl of water.
When I went back again this afternoon he was still tied up in the garage and he was barking constantly.
The owners of the dog I am looking after have said that he spends a lot of time outside, and barks through the night.
He has also had his ears cropped. (quite badly I may add)
I dont know his usual routine as I have only seen him for 5 days, but I cant imagine it's any different than it has been for the past 5 days. I have seen them walk him once to the end of the street and then sit on the grass. He always seems to be alone, and therefor barking all the time. I really feel bad for him.
Is this something that can be reported to the municipality or will they not be intrested as its not exactly a case of cruelty? But it is neglect in my opinion.

I'm so happy it's worked out for her...and for you Amanda. She fits right in to your giant-fur-baby family! :o)

Hi Ladies, Have a look at her now: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=269627596408102&set=a.121127944591402.8055.121119787925551&type=1&theater

Sabrina her ears as you know are cropped :o( although on closer inspection not too bad (have seen far worse), although we are totally against cropping and docking like most people, they do not stand up most of the time but this only adds to her character the more we get to know her. She has still got lots of puppy tendances, (by the way her birthday is tomorrow :o) so a VERY happy one for her :o) Dog flaps, ha ha, you guys make me laugh, we are fortunate to have an older villa with a wooden back door, so we do have a rubber dog flap bought from ACE, admittedly anyone could crawl through it, but anyone who decides to try and steal from our house will have 4 Great Danes and our K9 Cross, Cleo to deal with, (although they would probably welcome any intruder in with welcome paws and a lot of slobber! So security is not an issue ;o) They have mattresses from Ikea (with changeable fitted sheets for cleaning) as two of their beds (as well as regular XL beds) and so far so good with durability, you do have to be creative with where to get things, so much so, that we have started "The Big Dog Shop" on the GDID website with big stuff for big dogs, as it can be a challenge here for sure finding long lasting or big enough stuff for them. That said they will never turn down a smaller chew or toy if given one, just has to be a constant supply! We will add photos of her (when she keeps still long enough) to the Facebook page and again thank you once again for your support, funny how the world goes round, as we lost one of our Danes 3 weeks ago, "Old Boy Charlie" at the ripe old age of 12 (we do still miss him dearly), so I guess Honey was destined to be with us. For those interested we do still have a black, female, neutered Great Dane (sister to the two brothers we have) she is in foster care looking for a forever home, very gentle girl. We are incredibly strict on where the Danes go for obvious reasons, so if you know anyone seriously interested with large dog experience we will consider, all they need do is go via the website (her details are on the home page). Thanks once again Amanda

I went to visit people in the country in Canada and we were confronted by the 2 biggest dogs I had ever seen in my life. I had never seen a Great Dane and I seriously thought these were very odd horses and why the heck were they loose lol. They trotted toward us and I got back in the car lol. I am 5feet tall..their heads were as tall if not taller so I am sure you can understand my reluctance to meet these 2 on their level. Anyway, they were big babies but huge.....lovely dogs but my god it must cost alot to feed them since they dont eat hay lol

Hi all, Thought you would like to know that "Honey" as we've re-named her (she was not responding to Queen her given name) is fast asleep on a sofa next to my husband. A delightful girl, our 3 other Danes have welcomed her into the home without any issues, we had forgotten how bouncy and overly playful a 60kg puppy is like ;o). She romps around with the other, has worked out where the dog flap is and is very much at home. Thank you ladies for bringing her to our attention, she is safe and sound and enjoying life how a Dane should be :o) Regards Amanda *LIKE* a whole lot! Awesome work as always Amanda. Good on you Sabrina for getting help for the pup. Great Danes in Dubai

Thats fantastic news....Im so relieved she is no longer in that house where she was not loved, bored and obviously distressed...she deserves better! What do you think of her ears? When I saw her a few months ago they were bandaged up, obviously just been cropped! Thanks so much for your help and taking her into your home :) Lets hope they dont now go and get themselves another dog!

I saw Sabrina yesterday and she had already emailed Amanda of Great Danes in Dubai as well, but no response as yet. K9 Friends had suggested contacting the Municipality.

Why don't you contact Amanda from Homely Petz, she's rescued quite a few Great Danes and has about 5 of them herself.

K9 friends (050 274 1949) will have the current contact details of the best person to speak to at DM. It would also be worth contacting Amanda at Great Danes in Dubai - http://www.greatdanesindubai.com/# SUCH lovely, gentle dogs. :(
