it's a full time job just being me. What a fantastic response! I say I read the paper and eat bonbons all day. That's all they'll believe anyway...

I know how you feel, wuffles. I get asked that question all the time. Even my DH used to ask me that in the beginning. I felt depressed and guilty and then mad!. Just because I was not sitting at a desk with a title to my name, and no projects or whatever achievement to show, did not make me useless. It takes a lot of practice and getting used to and coming up with witty responses. I still continue to study on the side and take my continuing education classes etc so that I will be ready to get back on the band wagon when the time comes. Some people even said to me "you spent most of your life studying, and now you do nothing?" Sometimes I can't help to reply, "Of course I am! I am living large" :D Studying would be nice but distance ed costs so much when you already have a degree-would jump at the chance if I had the money

it's a full time job just being me. :) Wonder what they'd make of that-love it! Glad I am not alone in having the question annoy me

Like Wuffles i often feel intimidated/guilty when people ask me where i am working. It makes me feel as if i`m being judged. Also, sometimes i think people are not interested to even continue talking to you. It`s like everyone is interested only in networking?!

Hi wuffles. Congrats on your retirement. I've had the same thing twice and this is only since living in Dubai. I was on a medical leave for a couple of months last year and people that I worked with would ask me this. Now I've quit working for someone else and I'm in the process of starting my own business (not in the UAE). So, again, every so often, people will ask me this. Like you, I don't really feel that I need to explain myself and trhe question always throws me off. What I think is that they're jealous or they just don't know how to have a normal conversation. I also found this when I first came here, the ridiculous things people would ask me and if I answered in any way they would say 'why' about 500 times, like a small child would. I've started to be selective on who I answer questions to. Usually people that ask this type of question aren't really friends or even interested in your side, they just want to hear themselves. Maybe you could turn it around and ask them what they do all day at their job. Then ask them if they would do that for free. Hee hee, I can be bad too.

I would say " I enjoy filling my time with the simple pleasures in life - in a way I could only dream of doing when I worked hard for my living for 30 years". I can't wait for the day when I can say this.
