Umm....so DD's passport expires in December and we are just about to send it off for renewal before we fly home in August as I was under the impression she needed to have at least 6 months left on it for international travel. Will we get it back in time??? Don't do it!!!! Do the premium 4 hour service in the UK. It is 300 AED cheaper. So will she definitley be able to travel?

The whole thing is ridiculous! No it's not it's a process that has taken a lot of planning. There are still ways to get a passport quickly, but the message loud and clear is PLAN in advance. Awa wi ye! Come back to us when you apply for yours...and tell us you feel the same tetchy? Moi? :D Don't blame you though, I would be raging!

maybe they need to just add the time left on your passport to the new passport if you apply like really early...... 9 months may not be enough. lol They say they do that, in the Top Tip from the Dusseldorf Embassy: "You can renew your passport up to nine months before it expires, and we'll add any unused time onto your new passport. Remember - you can't travel without a valid passport. Don't leave it until the last minute!" yes i know that they will add 9 months on if done early etc, my hubs ran out of pages and we got a new passport last year the biggy one but he had something like 6 years left on it...... only got the extra 9 months! Oh, my goodness, I see what you mean, yes, that's a real pain. Husbad's got the same problem with his passport, it doesn't expire for 8 years but his job involves so much travelling, he needs a new one. At that point, his company should pay for renewal, now I think about it.. I saw something about using e-gate instead of your passport, on one of the websites, but it wasn't clear to me how that works?

Unfortunately, there are dire warnings by the British Embassy in Dusseldorf about your not making travel arrangements before your passport has been renewed/returned :( I'm not sure if it's a blessing or not that they are aiming eventually to have all passport renewals from ex-pats dealt with in the UK as well as those by UK residents.. It seems that visas and passport applications are outsourced to a company in Ireland called Abtran. I'm definitely going to apply 9 months in advance next time, if I'm still abroad.. Must check to see dorter's passport status.. maybe they need to just add the time left on your passport to the new passport if you apply like really early...... 9 months may not be enough. lol They say they do that, in the Top Tip from the Dusseldorf Embassy: "You can renew your passport up to nine months before it expires, and we'll add any unused time onto your new passport. The whole thing is ridiculous! i can see why they changed it to have all the passports being printed in the same place, but then why dont you just send it to the uk in the first place, i suppose germany is cheaper? but then usually they are very on the ball there. they didnt want to have empty passports floating around, but then surely they must come in the diplomatic bag, so surely they must be as safe as they could be! i have to renew 2 passports next year hopefully it will be sorted by then, it was expensive getting them done here in auh but at least it was done.

For anyone that can't be bothered watching the video. 1. Currently you apply to Dusseldorf 2. The passport is printed in UK 3. Passport is sent from UK to here 4. Any documents (birth certs etc) are sent from Dusseldorf separately 5. During mid 2011 the whole process will move to UK so we will apply to UK not Dusseldorf and it will come back from UK. What a mess.!!!! there we are then i was RIGHT. obviously it wasnt working. i would take advantage of the 9 months extra and get them done in the uk when you visit. its cheaper even paying for the quick turn around.

[i'>[b'>[b'>The aim is to save money by reducing processing costs, and ensure safety by not moving blank passports around the world[/b'>[i'>[/i'>[/b'>[/i'> What about saving TIME??? The whole of last year I was travelling no less than once a month with work... god knows what I would have done had mine expired last year!

OMG, BM, :\: But haven't they taken the money from your cc to process it? They *must* be able to back-track it from there, surely?

Maybe he means it's not a problem as he is going to have it done very quickly? The visa part shouldn't take more than a couple of days. Don't worry about that bit... ;) Fingers crossed for us all. :D i would say that the visa could be done in an hour if you get the right people to sort it, that shouldnt be the problem, its getting the passport back in time which is the major issue. leaving the country without a entry stamp/visa stamp can be sorted at the airport i believe now

i thought i had read a week or so back that passports now are going to be printed in the uk did anybody else see that, so perhaps they have tried this way and are going to be changing it again, as obviously its not working very well now is it. in the beginning everyone got them back like in 2 weeks which is ok as doing at the embassy it was like 10 days anyway and with the postage there and back thats not too bad, but now its looking like its taking 4 weeks, if you are told that at the beginning and know what the timescales are then you wouldnt leave it too late and give yourself plenty time to accommodate this. but what happens in the meantime if you need to leave the uae for an emergency it could cause no end of problems, at least if it was being done in the embassy you can go up to the embassy and get it back etc.

Mushroom they told me on the phone not a week ago, that it *could* take 4 weeks after they process the CC. (sheesh, nothing like confusing people) Do you have a good PRO to assist with your LO's visa. I can give you a number?... Yes and by the sounds of everybody on here, 4 weeks is probably more likely. I am going to call the embassy today and see if there is an alternative way of us leaving the country without a passport. Thank you so much for offering the PRO. My husband's HR department will be processing it though so presumably it's the same? He has always been very knowledgable and efficient in the past but I have no idea why he's saying it's not a problem with the visa....

We spoke to the passport office today (the expensive number directs you to the UK btw even though the passports are being processed in Germany....!!???) and they seemed hopeful that we will get ours back before next Monday.... I'm not so positive but the representative said they try their best to accommodate everybodies travel plans as per the covering letter. He also said that it should take 2 and a half weeks MAXIMUM from when your credit card has been debited as that is when they begin processing. Thought I would share this for all those who are worried. The visa for my newborn though is another issue. Can I get a pass for my baby to leave the country without a visa? Does anybody know? edited by Mushroom on 06/06/2011

Oh no, I've just read this thread and am now really panicking. I sent my new baby's passport off on the 17th May, the passport office in Dusseldorf received it on the 19th May, our credit card was debited on the 30th May and we travel next Monday (the 13th June). Is there ANY chance whatsoever we are going to get the passport back? Is there anybody out there who has got there's back in under 4 weeks? I did it this way cos everybody was telling me they got theirs back in 10 days/2 weeks. It looks like it's a busy time a year presumably?...... Arrrgggg..... Does anybody know if there is another way to leave the country with a newborn without getting their passport? I know there is a special exit pass you can get but I believe this is only relevant for UK travel? Can anybody help because after reading this thread I'm presuming there is no way we are going to get my baby's passport back next week. The passports is the least of your problems you must have a visa put in otherwise you will have real problems leaving and coming back in the UAE. Just call the numbers and chase the passport up and get your paperwork organised and ready for the residence visa etc to be put in. Thanks Boomerang. I have been saying this to my husband for months but his HR guy is saying it's not a problem... not quite sure how..... Why do I get the feeling I'm not going anywhere for a while.....

Mushroom, bite the bullet and ring the extremely expensive phone line in London and tell them your predicament. If the passport hasn't already been sent, offer to pay for DHL or equivalent delivery, I think there might even be an express fee you can pay them. Otherwise, postpone your hols..
