Hi we are moving in to an apartment soon on a high floor with a great balcony area. We would love to be able to keep the sliding door open at times for the fresh air but there are no flyscreens on the sliding doors. We have a cat who is happy to stay inside but if the sliding door was open he of course would wander out to the balcony - which we don't want to risk. Has anyone seen anything to use to keep the door open but the cat inside? Maybe some sort of gate (he is not a great jumper so something about 1.2 - 1.4mt high would work) or temporary flyscreen we can fix to the frame with velcro? Any ideas appreciated.
TIA

you can get an enclosure built in your balcony. I made my own cage for my parrot, bought the grill from DragonMart, the entire roll and fixed it with a handyman for like 300 aed.

Dear Animal Lovers, In the last 3 months we have come to know of 4 cases where cats were out in the balcony and, for one reason or another, the poor animals have fallen, ending up in a tragedy. In one of these cases the cat jumped to another balcony and has not been found since. For those whom are not aware, if the pet causes some human injuries the pet owner will be held responsible and could be facing legal charges. Felines have by nature a very strong hunting impulse; even a flying bird in the horizon could trigger their native instinct. In many cases it’s deadly before they realize the danger. In a question of seconds you could lose your beloved pet. "Preventing is more effective than lamenting" Please share facebook page : "The Animal Project"

I am a vet nurse & animals come into clinics often from falling off balconies/windows etc, it's called High Rise Syndrome but honestly sometimes I think it should be called Stupid Owner Syndrome... Cats are smart, but inquisitive.... They will jump!!! The injuries are usually pretty severe & often fatal! You could probably make something yourself with some soft netting & velcro strips, maybe try ACE? HTH!

Seriously, you shouldn't let your cat on the balcony without some sort of safety measures. Cats are killed and injured all the time by falling great heights from balconies - could you live with that if it happened to your cat? Also, if your cat should fall and injure someone else or someone else's property upon landing, you will be liable ... http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=530655396980886&set=a.530655386980887.1073741886.244126352300460&type=3&theater <em>edited by Sam7 on 15/04/2013</em>

Hi We have a cat whose been with us since last 21/2 yrs and we keep the balcony door slightly open all the time for him to use the litter tray as well as to sun-bask. Cats are smart fellows they will get used to it in no time.... Sorry to disagree, cats are smart but very curios and like to go where they are not supposed to go, it's in their nature, a friend of mine lived in an apartment and even though they were careful the balcony door was left open one day and the cat went over the balcony. She was devastated. It's too risky IMO.

Thanks so much for that. I know DKC well - they were so helpful when we were bringing our cat here. I will see what they can suggest.

Dubai Kennels and Cattery will custom make anything you want along those lines including some very nice cat enclosers for balconies.I can imagine they're not cheap though! It's always possible here to get a handyman to make you something to your own design aswell but other people perhaps have more experience of this and can point you in the right direction. http://www.dkc.ae/what-we-do/pet-enclosures-at-home.php
