Thank you everyone for your nice comments and advice. I will contact my insurer and see if I can continue my insurance privately. My husband's package doesn't include maternity for me so it's very upsetting. In the meantime, if someone can assist with temp work during August and September (cash in hand), it would really help. My experience is marketing and events but I am happy to file, do reception, secretarial work etc. I'm easily pleased - katedohers at hotmail dot com. I haven't had any problems with my pregnancy (touch wood) so would prefer to try and recoup some of the lost funds instead of sit at home. Thanks again for everyone's nice wishes. I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I saw a job advertised a few days ago and I've emailed you the info. Good luck with the job hunt.

I was laid off my job yesterday and i'm 7 months pregnant. The reason given was 'company restructuring' but my role is the only one been laid off. And I'm the only one pregnant. I have given 110% to my role and this is how they repay me - I will lose my healthcare (maternity benefits), and three mnths salary (including maternity leave). My husband's medical doens't include maternity so thats just great. My work experience is marketing and events. Does anyone know of any work from 3 August requiring cash in hand that I would be happy to do? Even reception work etc, I don't mind. If so, please email katedohers at hotmail dot com. I'm not due to give birth until end of September. Appreciate any support in advance. How much notice are you on? In theory your medical cover will run up until the end of your notice period. So if its 3 months you will be covered until after baby is here. I they want to cancel your employment visa immediately ( and in affect you sign to receive all your dues) make sure you have it in writing your healthcare will continue. If not -In all honesty they probably have paid for all staff health insurance up front, so ask them to continue the healthcare until it is due to be renewed. If they refuse ask them if you can pay the balance back to them for the next few months in order to keep the insurance valid. Failing that - call the insurance company and ask them if you can continue but you will be paying privately.

NinaSimone, I am so sorry to hear about your predicament. I have been exactly in the same position. I challanged my employer, legal case have been going on for almost two years and my end of service benefit has not been paid yet (I wrote about it on the Forum). It is expensive and cetainly not fair! I would not bother going down that road. I really had faith in legal system here, but last two years changed my opinion drastically. I was interviewing while pregnant and was truly believing that I will find a job. I did not. To be honest knowing what I know now - I should have left UAE to deliver in my home country, DH should have moved out to a smaller apartment and would defo not bother with a job hunt as a growing belly is not attractive quality for employers here (or even in Europe). Let me know if you would like any more info and I will be happy to share my experience with you. Think about alternative plan, check your finances and options. It is not fair what happened to you and I really do not know how people who take this kind of action can sleep at night. x

I'm really sorry to hear that you were laid off. Its always a shock and always comes at the worst times. But I have to disagree with mpp_jl. As it is summer, a lot of people will be going on holiday and a lot of companies are hiring temps to cover their staff. Even reception work can pay up to 10,000 dhs a month and of course secretarial pays more. I suggest you get in touch with all the recruitment agencies in Dubai and say you are looking for temp roles and that you are flexible. You will be surprised at how many positions are available. Congratulations on your baby too! xx Sorry out of topic, I like your nickname that's what my DH calls me sometimes hehe. Haha thanks! Its what my ex boyfriend nicknamed me and its just stuck. x

Hi NinaSimone Really sorry to hear this. Unfortunately it's not uncommon in Dubai these days. Recently DIFCA (the org that runs DIFC) laid off 3 pg women on the same day! And they def had no recourse as DIFCA also happens to be the org which administers the DIFC law. Re; the cost of delivering... as a PP said, you could always try to convince them not to cancel the health insurance until you give birth. Failing that, try getting a govt health card (DHA) and try registering at AW asap. You may have missed the cut-off date but if you explain your situation you never know, they may take you on. I had both my dds at AW (despite having vg insurance) and the care was great. Finally, you could always consider delivering in yoru home country... if that is the UK it could work out free. And at least you don't have to rush back or worry about maternity leave now! Look on the bright side :-) Best of luck with whatever you decide. KB x

I am so sorry you are going through this xx I am also in a similar position to you, however I have 3 months notice, which is what you are entitled to as you have been dismissed arbitrarily. If you lodge a complaint this is what they will be told to pay you. You are also entitled to any outstanding leave, flights etc. Ask to remain on the medical care, they have nothing to gain by removing you. I am 4 months and was "consulted" on sunday. I too am the only one going, but my boss had made it clear that my pregnancy wont allow me to travel anymore so I am unable to my job!!! yeah right. I'm the HR manager too! It makes my blood boil, as the person who has protected employees from this discrimination to have the tables turned! Unfortunately we have no recourse as there are no rights for female employees full stop here, but you do have some rights as an employee. PM if you need to chat

I am so sorry to hear this :( So unfair.... It will be very difficult for you to find something now :( You should look for something temporary, but it will be secretary of reception and the salary will not be more than 4k :( sorry, but this the situation now and it's better to be prepared. Talk to them to keep the insurance and you will have to pay for it. You should check with the hospital you like also as many have packages on not so bad prices. I went for one in Belhoul as it was cheaper than the insurance - you pay premium and then the cost of the things you need to do is not all covered, so you pay again. Also the doctor was great :) Wish you all the luck possible and congrats on the baby :D

Health insurance is paid for on a yearly basis and usually insurance companies will not give a reinbursement if cancelled before the expiry (some will on a pro-rata basis). So really, the company will not lose anything by keeping you on their health insurance until it expires.

I believe a labour case for unfair dismissal won't get too far, going by other EWers experience. Please talk/write to them about keeping your med insurance till you deliver and pay for it yourself if you have to. Yes you loose maternity leave, but what do you mean by loosing 3 months salary? If they are holding back your dues then you should file a labour case.

Get a government health card asap and then a phone call to the ministry of labour to lodge a complaint against them, dont know how far you will get though. Think it may help if you have worked at least 3 years for them. Please do this!! How could they? Restructuring my *** and only affects 1 person? ((Big hugs)) But fight it! Good luck!! Def fight it ! Big hugs and try to stay positive - I'm a firm believer in Karma :)

So sorry to hear of your situation. Maybe you can ask HR to allow you to pay the premium on your insurance to keep it going until you have the baby?
