JHM i have the same situation and the verdict (on EW) was yes because you are travelling to your home country. we've then booked the 4 hour premium service while in Uk. Think you'll be fine but will update you in a couple of weeks. :)
Great, thank you BM, I hope it all goes ok :)
When I got DS newborn passport in Oct last year it took 7 days door to door, goodness knows what's gone on in Dusseldorf to muck up the system since then!
On April 1st, Overseas Passport Applications were "streamlined" (or any other weasel word of your choice). So, now, you send your application to Dusseldorf, Dusseldorf sends your application to the UK, the UK issues the new document and possibly sends it directly to you, or, more likely, sends it back to Dusseldorf who sends it back to you. What's more, the renewal is not done by the British Passports Office themselves, it is outsourced to a company in Ireland, who I should imagine are one and the same people who request your credit card details at 74p a min or whatever outrageous sum it is before putting you on hold for an unconscionable amount of time to speak to a useless, though friendly, person, who more often than not, cannot help.
HTH. HAND.
Oh, I feel sick... This was going to be the first time in 5 years that we were getting out of Dubai in the summer and I've just realised that my youngest's passport expires in January. We're not due to go until the end of July but the embassy and website are now quoting 8 weeks to get the passport back.
Does anyone know if they'll let my wee one on the plane if she has less than 6 months left on her passport? I could go up to London to get it renewed when we're back but I don't want to send it to Germany if there's no way it'll be back.
Thanks for the advice, I have email the contact at Dusseldorf, requesting an update, Dubai is stressful enough without this! UK passport advice line was useless........they even had the nerve to ask for my credit card details first to charge 74p a minute before I was able to consult them.....totally astounding! My friend sent hers off in April and received it back in 3 weeks, if I had known it would take 8 weeks I would have renewed whilst back in the UK. Nice of them to announce on 17th June that it now takes 8 weeks! Great for people like us who applied in May! Thanks for the advice......I'll keep you posted x
Omg...we are traveling soon too band still not received child's renewed passport. Dhl'd on 16 May and payment taken on 27 May.
I've just emailed the contact below (thx very much to loopy lotto and simpleasabc for reposting, I'd missed this info previously). I'll let you know if i get a reply.
Aarghhh
Hi can anyone help? I sent mine and my sons passport off on 20/5 and my credit card was debited on 7/6, I have just phoned the UK (and paid by credit card for the privelege) to be told the processing time is now 8 WEEKS! I'm due to fly back to the UK on 10/7, if anyone can pass on a contact detail for someone at Dusseldorf it would be greatly appreciated as I am satrting to stress out now....plus we are due to fly to the US from the UK at the end of July and the way things are going, my passpoirt won't even be back in Dubai by then. Please advise, I am so stressed! x
I share your pain, sent mine on 24th May, card was debited on 14th June (same timescale as you!). I'm hoping that it will be 3wks from credit card debit as others have posted was their experience in the threads on this in recent weeks. But I was due to go back to UK on 18th July, and was getting soo stressed that I have decided to postpone my trip by 2 weeks because of this...luckily I can be flexible, less lucky that me and kids are stuck in the heat for longer!

Loopy Lottie posted this and other people used it with success:
Try this..... I emailed a few days before I called, didnt get an immediate reply but she (he?) did reply once my pasport had been dispatched. You never know......

and what's the deal with stringing out the bit before you actually get to speak to someone, for as loooooooooooong as possible to rack up the phone bill.
Good thing passports have to only be renewed once every ten years, it takes that long for your BP to return to normal.
:D
That phone line is a disgrace (but that's where I came in ;) )
Sorry, BM, I've been out of the UK for so long that I have been on the receiving end of British "Customer Service" from a distance many a time and know it is often not all it is cracked up to be..
You're going to like this one.
So today I call the passport advisory helpline/customer service whatever in the UK. To book apt to do one day premium service for DS passport to avoid this Germany *nonsense*.
So they ask me for a postcode. I don't have a UK postcode. Oh but you need one. Well I don't *have* one. Oh but you need one. So what do I do if I don't have one??! Oh just give us one for wherever you will be OR go to the British Embassy in Dubai and get your passport there..
Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr if I could do that WTH would I be phoning for???! sheesh........
On a lighter note, it makes conversations in Dubai seem easier actually!!!
