I was at carluccios last night for my 2 yr old's birthday dinner. The staff are very child friendly, and the children get a little activity pack and decent children's menu (35dhs for breadsticks, mains, drink and dessert). Overlooking fountains as well. For adults the food is pretty average, except I tried the lobster lasagne last night for first time and it was surprisingly really good! Lime tree and More cafe is also nice food, I've had a couple of bad experiences with service in Gold & Diamond park, but I would still probably go again.

Cafe Ceramique food is not great but that is not what you go for. Probably too hard for your 2 year old to do any of the painting. More food is okay/nice and lots of it. Pizza Express is good. Other option is Carluccio's, nice food and they may give you the option of the children making your own pizza if you ask. I know they do this at the weekend.

I agree that Rainforest Cafe is awful, we took the kids there and my son on presentation of his meal actually burst into tears! The food was all beige and bland and greasy and so visually unappealing. Its got to be the worst food I have ever tried. We ended up leaving with 90% of the meal uneaten. Rhonda Locatelli is pretty good, you can do the aquarium before hand, sit down to lunch and the kids can help make the pizzas (the chefs are so great with kids), and watch them being cooked and then a cake afterwards. Oh yes and Anon is right, if you want more casual fat burger is great, they have a nice kids play area. edited by Ilovechoos on 05/08/2014

The Nandos restaurant in the Novetel in Al Barsha is nice and intimate and all indoors. It's usually very quiet and the staff are very welcoming to kids. They gave our birthday boy a free dessert and they do good kids meals with fruit.

thanks ladies - any other ideas? i do like cheesecake but i think way too crowded and tough for a bday of around 20 people (adults and kids) not looking to do any other activity apart from lunch - just somewhere where the kids will enjoy and an opportunity to have somewhere to blow out some candles...too hot for the garden and i can't fit that many people in my house!!! no need for animal theme although that was a bonus!

Rainforest Cafe is dire. The food is overpriced and tasteless. The music is so loud you cannot hear yourself think. Can you go to the Aquarium and then lunch at Cheescake Factory? I have't eaten at Cheescake Factory but DH said it is good. Cheese cake has excellent food but it Wudnt be fun for the children.
