We want to take our son to the UK for an opinion from an actual children's hospital. We've been given conflicting advice here and have been advised to go to the UK. The question is where? And how do we go about it. We're not regular visitors so not registered with a GP. We have insurance which may or may not cover the operation as it's congenital, it's not covered here. That's not the issue though, it's getting the right care. It could be in the north west or London. Appreciate any help/ recommendations. Thanks.

Thanks Claire that's very kind of you! Exciting times ahead, so long as I can get my head around everything and work out what to do for the best. Have been in touch with some of the GOSH consultants so will take it from there :) Hope you are enjoying being back in the UK?

Thank you Daisy 111, Manchester would be closer for me, as I am from the north east but I am no longer eligible for NHS care and can't see anything about private patients for there but GOSH has a specific private section. Had a look at Portland too, which could be an option as I could give birth there too. Definitely erring on the side of going home now. I will send you an email later if that's ok, would be good to hear your experience at GOSH (even from a practical side as I'm wondering about places to stay etc.)

We saw a Paediatric Urologist last summer with our DD. His name is Alan Dickson and he works out of the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital as well as some of the other private Manchester hospitals. He has done work with Great Ormond Street as well and is very highly regarded in his field. We are lucky to have international private healthcare but I don't think he charges for a fortune for his initial consultation. We ended up going to the Children's Hospital A&E department a few times whilst we were home last year and they did not charge us once, even though we offered and told them that we were not entitled to free NHS care. Our DD has ongoing treatment in Dubai and he confirmed that they are doing everything correctly which was comforting. I'm not sure who you see over here but Dr Jhouni was brought in as a consultant to our normal doctor at the American hospital and was also very helpful. I can also recommend Dr Sridhar at the American Hospital who has recently taken over the treatment for her - he also seems to be very knowledgeable and very thorough! edited by Dubai Blue Moon on 22/01/2013 And I should also mention Alan Dickson too as he started the process with my daughter and was also fantastic (and is still my daughter's consultant Unfortunately he doesn't specialise in keyhole surgery as was required by my daughter - hence referral to Patrick Duffy

At GOSH I would suggest either Peter Cuckow or Imran Mushtaq both of whom are highly experienced and respected internationally in this specialty. edited by Genie on 27/11/2013

Just wondering whether any of ladies saw any one at GOSH, if so who and would you recommend them? At my 20 week scan the Dr picked up 'severe' Hydronephrosis in one of the baby's kidneys. Really need to speak to a pediatric urologist who has experience of this, so I can work out what treatment might be needed and how soon after birth etc (as it may dictate whether I give birth at home or stay here). I have been in touch with the GOSH gulf office and they have forwarded my file on to a consultant urologist there for an opinion, but there seem to be a few names mentioned and not sure who to request to see. (I will be going privately so will be able to choose)

Just been through same research - we have been told GOSH the best and we are seeing Peter Cuckow who also practises at the Portland. All the best.

We took our son back to uk for a congenital urology condition. We saw Mr mushtaq who works at gosh and the Portland. Out AXA insurance covered costs of the surgery etc but not the cost if travelling to the uk.

As you are not an ordinary resident of the UK, you will have to go privately. They're clamping down on NHS abusers at the moment so I would recommend The Wellington hospital. ETA not saying that you are a NHS abuser OP. edited by dinks on 22/01/2013

If it was my child I would contact Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and speak to their Urology department. They purely deal with children and have probably seen the condition before and will be able to help you. Here's a link to the department for you. Hope you get the help you need. http://www.gosh.nhs.uk/health-professionals/clinical-specialties/urology-information-for-health-professionals/meet-the-team/?__utma=1.2103371615.1358849452.1358849452.1358851701.2&__utmb=1.2.9.1358851713706&__utmc=1&__utmx=-&__utmz=1.1358849452.1.1.utmcsr=gosh.org|utmccn=(not%20set)|utmcmd=toptab&__utmv=-&__utmk=57928362 I believe there is also a paediatric urology centre in St Thomas's hospital but I would say that Great Ormond Street would be your best place to start. Maybe your consultant here can refer you.
