Hi - we are living in Qatar at the moment but my husband has been asked for interview at Repton Dubai and Gems Wellington. I know some people who went to Repton UK but wanted to know if anyone out there has opinions about this school. We do not want to jump out of the frying pan....

If the turn-over of teachers at Wellington is anything to go by I'd say the teachers are not happy at all. In one year they had over 25 teachers hand in their notice - not good for the students. They do however have a new Principal now.

RD is owned by a young Russian man. He is very business minded and subsequently runs the school in the most efficient manner possible. This includes terminating people on salaries that the company feel can be saved.they are head quartered in SZR and I suppose if you are a teacher, you'll be fine. If not then consider wisely. In addition you'd want to negotiate as best you can because a salary increment is about as likely as a snog from Brad Pitt. edited by HelenRhodes on 10/01/2013 You can't negotiate salary at schools here for teaching positions. All teachers are out on the pay scale according to qualifications and years of experience. "benefits" can be negotiated, never say never. Not at GEMS and Repton any more.

Wow - thank you all for your replies - I think he can build a better picture now and figure out some questions to ask at interview. Anywhere has to be better than the school he is at in Qatar.....

I would say, it would depend whether your DH was going to be in senior, prep, pre-prep or infant.......as from teachers point of view I cannot say regards the construction, a lot of new classrooms have opened up this academic year, there has been a 20% increase in students, the remaining buildings are due to be opened this year and look to be on target for that, which includes senior school library and performing arts centre Facilities shortage is not the issue at Repton, disparity between the two sides of the school (junior integration into seniors) is by far the biggest area which needs improvement in my opinion.....a real prep school would have a prep school from year 6 to year 8, not year 5 & 6 only. Year 7 is too harsh for the kids in my opinion.

Associated or not, the package at Wellington will be more than the package at Repton. In terms of where they let you live (or housing allowance) and salary. That's not the case any more as benefits have been revised at Repton. Repton pay for flights and health insurance for spouse and 2 children, GEMS do not. OP if you want more info on working for both companies your more than welcome to email me star dot southern at ymail dot com ( no spaces). edited by starsouthern on 09/01/2013

Repton UK and Repton Dubai are associated by HTH Not quite true. The Headmaster of Repton UK is on Repton Dubai's board of Govenors I believe. There is an exchange of a group of students every year. The school has developed hugely in the last couple of years. Yes the head comes over for a jolly once a year and a few students do an exchange but it still has no resemblance to the UK school academically or otherwise, for one RD is IB and RUK is A levels. edited by dinks on 09/01/2013

Repton UK and Repton Dubai are associated by name only. Gems is a great company to work for, all the teachers I know are very happy. HTH
