Rhinoplasty and revision Rhinoplasty - my experiences in Dubai
Since there are quite a lot of posts here about rhinoplasties I thought I'd share my experiences
I wanted rhinoplasty since I was 15. I had a small bump, bulbous tip, overhanging columella and slight overprojection
I underwent my primary rhinoplasty last year with Dr Jason Diamond at ABSMC. Prior to the op, I explained what I wanted - reduction in projection, refinement of tip, slight reduction of the small hump. He is very nice but gave me a lot of chat about how it is a really difficult surgery and I needed an expert, blah blah blah.
The clinic is OK, nothing special. There are nicer clinics. The pre op bloodwork is done by another clinic in the same building. The op was extremely expensive but I went ahead with it, thinking that an LA surgeon would be good...
The op itself went fine, but waking up was very unpleasant, and I was cold/shaking and in a lot of pain (basically felt like I'd had my face smashed in), after 5 or 10 mins of me crying they gave me morphine - don't know if they woke me up without it or if they just hadn't given me enough.
When the cast was removed I wasn't terribly impressed but thought I'd just wait for the swelling to go down.
I missed the next two trips of the doctor because the clinic does not contact patients for follow ups and does not keep patients informed of when the doctor is visiting. In general, they are not organised. The wait is always long, 30 mins - 1hr after appointment time
When I finally met with the doctor it was about 8 months after my initial surgery. I had not seen any changes in the shape of the nose in the past 4 months or so. It was at this point that I voiced my concerns to the doctor, namely
- the projection had not been reduced at all
- the entire tip was visibly twisted and off center
- the bridge was too low
- the supra tip and tip were bulky
(so overall, it was not a great result)
My concerns were brushed off and I was told that the bulky tip was due to swelling, and the twisting and asymmetry couldn't be fixed because "my entire face is asymmetric, as asymmetric as they come" (this isn't true, I have an average level of symmetry)
At the 2nd follow up I was given a steroid shot in the tip to attempt to reduce and residual swelling. My original doc said that it was a great result and that I didn't need a revision, reducing the tip would be too difficult and reducing the projection was impossible as it would widen the nose. It was a this point that I started consulting other doctors for revision.
So far I have seen
Dr Allen Rezai - very nice, modern, organised clinic. Very nice guy. Told me it wouldn't be a big deal to reduce the tip. However, looking at his before/after pics, I find them a bit too rounded/too much tip volume
Dr Khan - again a nice clinic, lovely staff. Had to wait about 3 weeks for an appointment but they called me when a cancellation came up as requested so I went early. Sent clear directions to the clinic
Dr Khan himself was very nice but was reluctant to operate. He claimed it was a very difficult surgery and that I should fill up the bridge with filler to balance the tip.
I get the feeling that because he gets a lot of requests, he can pick and chose his patients and so it would make sense that he might avoid a tricky case that involved correcting another surgeons work. Still, it was frustrating, that a talented surgeon would avoid a difficult surgery.
Dr Noorman Van Der Dussen - Singelberg clinic, Belgium
Had a skype consult with this doctor and was very impressed. He suggested an open revision, with a graft to the bridge and reduction of the tip, and was extremely thorough in his explanation of how he would do things. He would be my first choice for revision but he does not have any free spaces until September
Dr Gabriel Saab - Cosmesurge
Not at all impressed with this clinic at all in that they kept me waiting 2hrs after my appointment time and they have absolutely no reading material in their waiting area. Several other ladies left the clinic in frustration!
Dr Saab himself is very nice. Proposed reduction of the tip, supra-tip and the projection and said there was no need to graft the bridge - filler could be done at a later stage if I still wanted to raise the bridge. Quoted 20k aed for the tip work, but he also operates in Beruit for cheaper ($3k)
Will note at this stage that he said I was the third patient he had seen in this trip who were coming from the same original doctor for a revision.
My only pause with him is that he favours closed rhinoplasty over open. Most sources say that open is more accurate, especially for revisions and most surgeons do open rhinos. I cannot find too much in the way of reviews or before/afters pics for him, however, he does specialise in noses and is clearly experienced.
I have one more surgeon that I might consult, Dr Nader Saab. He also operates in both Dubai and Beirut.
If I went back in time, I think I would have probably gone to Dr Khan for the primary surgery
Would be happy to hear any other ladies experiences with any of these doctors! (Especially Dr Saab) Hope those considering rhinoplasty in Dubai find this information useful
