Took my 6 year old to the dentist yesterday. Dentist advised that root canal is needed. Since this is baby teeth - is this neccessary?

Also, has anyone had any experience with children and 'laughing gas'?

Thanks

G

Dr Agnes Roze at Nicholas and Asp. I can highly recommend her. Good luck!

Many moons ago I was a Certified Dental Assistant in Canada - and we treated many baby teeth with RCT. It's not as intense a procedure as it is on adult teeth as the roots are much shorter. However, depending on what tooth it is, removing the tooth prematurely could result in a lot of alignment/spacial issues down the road which could prove to be more expensive/traumatic in the long run to treat. If you are not confident with this dentist, by all means, get a second opinion or at the very least ask for an explantion as to why they are recommending RCT over extraction...but don't discount the idea completely as it can be a very effective treatment. WHen it comes to pediatric dentistry, it is always important to consider the long term effects of any treatment plan. It is always advantageous to hold on to baby teeth as long as possible to hold the space and keep the alignment for the proper eruption of the adult teeth - treatment down the road on permanent teeth is far more costly and uncomfortable. Good luck!

OH no way - terrible, I would def get a few opinions at least. Try Dr Flora at Dr Nicholas and Asp postgraduate academy in DHC, she is lovely and they are really professional and thorough with reasonable prices too. Good luck ;)

Unless the teeth were really bad - I doubt this was necessary at all. I went to a well known dental European dental clinic on the beach road - formerly they were on the Al Wasl Road - and the pediatric dentist did all sorts of things (fluoride treatment/xray/cleaning)without telling and then tried to charge me for the - we only went for a check up! My son was just two. I complained at the reception desk - and the dentist came down and brazenly lied and told the dentist manager (who had been called by then) that she'd informed me of the procedures and the prices! I was appalled - and wrote a stinky letter of complaint - and got a refund. But I never forgot that dentist - and I never went back there either. You have to be really careful and get a second opinion if they recommend radical treatment. Sorry to say, a lot of them are in it for the money - not the care...

I took my kids to the dentist who has several offices on al Wasl. I have had them for years for myself and always very happy. But the pediatrician dentist there said that my 7 year old needed a root canal. I couldn't believe it but at the same time, they are the professional and I am not. You want the best for your kid. So we did it. Nevertheless, I haven't been back, call it "gut feeling" but I have asked my mum to take an appointment for my kids when we go back to our home country this summer. At least I'll get a second opinion.

Get a second opinion first off. In answer to your question though, root canal in children will be performed for 2 reasons: if there will be loss of the use of that tooth and to keep the space for adult teeth later in life. Removing the tooth in itself can cause problems, and your DD may need to have spacers placed and may have problems chewing and eating in future. This can lead to misalignment if you choose extraction. You didn't say which tooth it was, if it is one that may be out within the next 2/3years then I wouldn't go ahead with it, if its solid (and remember a 'baby tooth' may be there until she is 11/12) I would seriously consider it if I'd had a second opinion and both Doctors agreed.

I also have to agree I took our 4 year old to the dentist in the UK and he just counted his teeth I think all this root canal business is horrendous on a child who still has their baby teeth!!!!

I'd go for three opinions to be honest. Dentists in Dubai have for years now exploited patients by doing root canals at every opportunity possible. If you do a search you will find this point has been discussed on EW before. Good luck in finding a reliable dentist and don't do it.

I'd also go for a second opinion. My friend's daughter was 6 when the dentist decided she needed root canal and had, unfortunately, started the procedure at the same appointment. They took her for a second opinion and the second dentist was pretty taken aback that root canal had been considered on a child. Like Smells, I've had root canal and I wouldn't put my children through it - not on baby teeth. Just out of interest, is this dentist at a practice with a couple of branches on Al Wasl road who are known for doing examinations at schools? Can't think how else to ask, it's just that is where my friend's daughter went to start with.

I would definitely have a second opinion. I have actually given up on Doctors and Dentists and well just about anybody associated with the medical profession here. I wait until we are back in Switzerland to have any check ups now <em>edited by SwissGirl on 23/05/2011</em>

When I took my kids to our dentist in the UK I mentioned to her that I hear so much about filling of baby teeth and even root canal work on baby teeth - she was horrified. I now just take my kids for their check ups when we are in the UK on our holidays. My little girl is 6 and I would not put her through root canal treatment on her baby teeth - they are falling out by the day anyway!

I would ask for at least a second opinion. The first dentist I had here in Dubai wanted me to have a root canal, I wasn't sure about her decision and went to another one who "saved" my tooth without having done it....

I would seriously consider not having it done on one so young if its a baby tooth. I am not a dentist but have had a root canal and its quite a traumatic process. Would you really want to subject one so young to that if its not necessary. I think it would be enough to turn them off dentists forever. Having said this I have heard of a few friends kids here who have had a root canal at the age of 7, the reason being, diet and no flouride in the water. Good luck with your decision.

If it's a baby tooth it doesn't sound normal - the norm would be to pull it or seal it until the new one comes through Best to treat the reason for the problem as well to prevent other teeth being damaged

if it's a baby tooth, why not just get it pulled if it is that damaged?
