Ok, so I've been in a similiar experience and here is what I think or here is my research. For FS1 there are some fantastic FS1 nurseries. My son is going to Cocoon (fS1 nursery) in September its in Jumeriah 3. I also heard about Childs Play & The childrens Garden. They will get just as good FS1 as putting them in actual school and in nursery the classes tend to be slightly smaller and focused. Then you will have to apply NOW for FS2 next year. The new schools such as GEMS in silicon oasis and JBS (IB) in Jumeirah 1 all have places. The British Curriculum schools you could try that still accept places for next year FS2 2012/13: Horizon, Safa School, JAPS, DBS, WPS, WIS. Its a big gamble, but most people put there kids down in 3 or 4 schools, so as it gets closer to September, you will see more spaces become available as the mass gets sorted out, but that means you have to wait right until the end of August first week of September but usually 2 or 3 spaces become available or that is what I was told. I would focus on FS1 nursery for now and at the sametime put your childs name down for next year FS2. But the problem is that if you do FS1 at a nursery (unless that's really your only option) then you're competing for far fewer places in FS2. Consider also that siblings get priority so you really have to be high on the waitlist to get in for FS2.

Sorry for the thick question. Why is getting in to FS2 harder than getting into the older grades? Surely there are roughly the same amount of children at each grade level? Wow it seems like schools are really busy again. :\: It's because FS2 is basically the first compulsory schooling point. Schools give preference to internal FS1 students and siblings of existing students so outside prospects who didn't do FS1, or did it at nursery, unfortunately have next to no chance. There are schools, like Jebel Ali, that don't offer FS1. HTH.

To all you ladies, many thanks for all your helpful comments and advise. We now feel so much more confident about what's available. I just wish I knew that I should have done this before and I thought I was ahead of the game last Sept. Will post with what eventually happens. Moonbeam.

I'm in the same boat trying to get FS1 places for my 2. Virtually every school seems to have closed waiting lists or have hundreds on there. The Childrens garden may have places come September (waitlisted for now) but are monstrously expensive! Wellington Primary (not the international one but the one behind shangri la) told me they only have 10 kids on the waiting list for september. Emirates International Meadows said they have 120 applications for 105 places so those 2 seem to be the shortest lists. The new DSO Gems has places and I've just been this morning to see Bradenton in Sports City which is lovely and has places, although its American curriculum. I think I'm going to end up putting them in there for the early years and put their name down for UK/IB curriculum for the next 3 years in advance! Does anyone have any experience of whether a load of places suddenly become available in September?? Even the nurseries all seem to be full. I think FS2 is worse than FS1 as the kids who were in nursery/at home and didn't do FS1 are added into the mix...which makes me rather worried for next year!

Star International in Umm Sequiem has closed its FS2 Wait list for September 2011 now. I have a very good friend who is in the same position as you. She is now looking at IB's schools now.

Have you tried Wellington Primary School as well as Wellington International School? You could also try the new Wellington Primary School in Silicon Oasis as they will surely have places available, they'll be opening this year in September I think... ETA its going to be called GEMS Wellington Academy in DSO.... edited by AdviceSeeker on 13/03/2011

I'm sorry to say that I'm almost certain you won't even get onto the wait list with those schools, but it's worth a phonecall. What about The Children's Garden? They are a (very well regarded) nursery but take children up to the age 5 so your LO could do FS2 there at least. You would stand a better chance of getting a place at a good school after FS2, which is the most difficult entry point. Good luck. edited by BrownEyedGirl on 13/03/2011

Can somebody please offer me some advise. Last May I registered my DD for FS2 2011, at JESS, Wellington, Safa, Kings and The English College. Not one of them has a place, infact she's way way further down the lists than when I actually registered and from what they tell me it's unlikely that anything will become available. So now I've called DESS, JPS, Horizon, other than Horizon who told me they allocate their places later, all have said they are full but I can still apply. I have to admit I'm pretty hopeless at this, I have one little girl and had no idea what a nightmare and how difficult it is to get a place in a school. Oh the other school we have been told to try is Jumeriah Baclarate. Does anybody have any advise or names of any other schools that I should apply for. I'm going to go to the Education evening on Tuesday so hopefully that will help me, but I really appreciate any words of help, I'm at my wits end. TIA.
