tonight we had Da Shi Dai - just some dim sum and nibbles

bill was AED123, and we gave the delivery man AED150, and he seemed relectant to give change.

normally would have given him AED10 and some coins, but it was strained on the doorstep for a sec or two, so when we finally got the change, there was no desire to tip

should we have let him keep the AED27 tip?

I had this the other evening. Delivery came to 73 dhs - I normally tip 10 dhs but the guy tried to keep 17 which I thought was a bit too much really. I ended up only giving him 7 because of trying him to keep 17 and the look he gave me - not sure if I should have given him anything but then I always feel bad if I don't tip. ETA Plus there was a 10 dhs delivery charge anyway! edited by Genie on 20/10/2011

I always give Dh10 tip, no matter what the order size. ditto unless of course it is KFC or Pizza hut and they are always late and the driver rings the bell 3,000 times in succession and is rude when we open the gate...then he gets nothing. or they missed call me.....

I usually round to the nearest 10 so in this case I would have told him to only give me 20 dirhams back - there is no way I would give 27 and especially if he was looking like he was going to take it anyway. I always tip here unless there is a reason not to but it makes me angry when people just don't offer change, it is rude as I believe that a tip should be earned and not expected. But then I feel awful holding my hand out for it as it makes me feel like I am being mean!

Considering there is usually already a 'delivery charge' added to the bill, I usually round it off to the nearest 10.

If they don't offer change, then demand it and give no tip, as you did. They will learn.

usually about 10% but if someone assumes the change is to be kept not that much and if there is a delivery charge added to the bill then nothing.

I ask what the total amount is when i order but the delivery guys here always seem to anticipate how much I\m going to give them and have the correct change ready (that does deserve a tip :))

I always try to keep an assortment of notes in the takeout/water jar so I am in control, lol.

That's a 22% tip LOL! I guess you can give yourself a pat on the back for being generous but he was a bit cheeky to assume you wouldn't want any change, if that's what he did.
