Hello!

Husband and I just recently moved into a beautiful apartment and after a week of living there, suddenly smelt very strong cigarette smoke filling our beautiful pad :( Neither of us are smokers so the smell is really obvious and offensive, plus I have asthma. Boohoo... We pinpointed the source to our neighbour who moved in around the same time as us.. and who smokes at home with his girlfriend and the smoke comes through the AC vents into our flat.

ANyone else had this problem and managed to solve it? I think that there is no law in Dubai to stop people from smoking in their apartments... I don't want to start unnecessary tension with this neighbour and of course, don't want to stop him from smoking in his own home as he should be allowed to do so.

Someone at work told me this is a common and UNSOLVABLE problem in Dubai :( ??

Have spoken with our building management but they seem pretty indifferent to the matter and are taking their sweet time having someone check out the AC vents. Grr.

We have this problem in our buildings. The major cause is the fresh air system part of the AC not working properly, so instead of the smells and air being sucked out, it's sent round the system. Your building maintenance need to look into it. Great info, thanks FairyDust :)

Thanks for your reply guys. Already spoke with the neighbour who seemed apologetic enough and really quite nice about the whole thing (so I don't want to start trouble) but he had a point that he was allowed to smoke in his flat.. which is true. Have spoken to the building maintenance who promised to come check out the AC vents this week. Fingers crossed something is sorted, but have taken into account the suggestions for air purifiers. Thank you ladies!! :) xoxxxx

IWhat a nightmare for you. It may be worth having a company like Jim’ll fix it or an A/c company come out and see if they can suggest anything to help and somehow add another filter? It may be worth you investing in some portable A/c units and then turning off the central A/c. Far from ideal and costly but your choices are limited based on the central A/c design of somehow not sucking all the emissions out.

There really is nothing that cane done. It is not illegal to smoke, and if he is inside doing it, at least he is not throwing the butts off the balcony, creating a danger. Have you considered speaking with the neighbor? It could be that he is sitting directly near the vent. Possibly ask if he could kindly open a window and go near it when he is smoking? And consider getting an air purifier. They are quite cheap at Life Pharmacy. As you have asthma, having one can only be beneficial, anyway.

Go and tell your new neighbors to stop being disgusting ****. And that you mean it in the nicest possible way, of course! edited by Guinness2 on 28/09/2014

all you can do is try and solve the problem in your house -= maybe see if you can get some extra filters put in the AC or get air purifieres.

hi Saffron_Parker :) I live in a joined villa and our neighbours smoke and it comes through our vents also :( We spoke to the guys at EMax and suggested a room himidifier/air filter, I was very sceptical and thought this won't work but it's proving me wrong. It wasn't cheap but I'm thinking of purchasing another one for upstairs as I'm that impressed with how it works ? Good luck hope you can find a solution to the cigarette smoke xx

Thankfully I haven't had to deal with this, but do know someone that had the same problem. The building maintenance guys checked the AC ducts and found a point that they were able to seal off (by simply taping with duct tape) and it completely stopped the problem. Obviously every case might be different, but definitely worth having someone take a look. If the building wont respond, may be get in touch with the landlord? And as a last resort, if its really bothering you, might be worth paying out of pocket to get someone to take a look.
