I'd second Lucky's too. Yes they have a lot of India and oriental in general pieces but if you look you'll find a fair few solid wood contemporary ones (we got a centre table - large one - thats solid wood with a plain top and flush solid square legs. The design on the top is just 5 engraved 'stripes' around the edge).
They are definitely worth a stop because of the huge difference in price. You'd get a fab table for about 1800-2000. If you want to go let me know, think I have the GPS coordinates for Sharjah saved. I can look it up.
Also try United Furniture. Very Home Centre-y but has the odd gem. Its on Shk Z between 2 and 3 interchange.
THe place suggested ie. Pinkys and Safita is more of the Indian / Pakistani kinda designs but in solid wood.
Alternatively for a contemporary look try Bo Concept, the One, id Design. Home centre may also have a few.. I'd say IKEA but then again you are not to keen on it.
Remember if you are here for even a few years and dont plan taking back your furniture with you.. then its not going to be worth it as you will get little or nothing if you try to resell it.
There is a PINKY in Barsha too, its on the main street to access MOE. SAFITA is als o a good option as recommended here. If you got a good budget then opt for Marina furniture. IKEA has sure come a long way and their quality has improved and last a few moves locally.
The Marina Tables seem to be all too long, but shall definitely give the others a try. Are the tables quite simplistic in those places or are they more Arabic style? I would prefer the contemporary look.

We also got ours at Pinky's in Sharjah but we have also bought loads of solid wood furniture at Luckys also in Sharjah and Safita which is in Al Quoz just down from Oasis Centre towards the Pepsi Factory.
Where in Sharjah would I have to look?
and is Safita on the Service Road next to SZR or further back?

Thanks Chocobella, I liked the first option of IKEA but my DH doesn't like to have IKEA furniture :(
The table size we are looking for is about 2 x 1 meters and shouldn't really be more than AED 2500
I have a solid wood table that I need to sell. Not sure of the dimensions as I am not at home right now, but can let you know later on this evening. It does need to be refinished, but is a lovely solid (and heavy!) table.
You've got mail

Hi Cleopatra
We got our table from Pinky - modern clean lines with the legs flush with the sides, made of the wood that lots of furniture here is made of (gone blank on the name) Oh yes sheesham? They have them in various sizes and at good prices (I think AED 1,800 for our 8-10 seater). They aren't dark brown but I'm fairly sure you can use a tinted wax on them. Certainly not top of the range quality but good value for the price, in my opinion.
edited for spelling

Same here Cleopatra, DH is not sold on Ikea at all! I am not sure of their wood as well, especially as some of their better known names scratch rather easily like Leksvik. I love the idea of saving space and extending only when required especially coz the Stornas http://www.ikea.com/ae/en/catalog/products/20176847/#/20176847 can easily seat 8 when extended. But DH is worried about how well the wood will bear the extending and compressing, scratches, chipping. In my experience Ikea wood looks solid but chips easily. In a fix myself. hope you can find what you are looking for. Or get it made like AB suggests, you would get the exact measurements you want too.

Am presently considering one at Home Center, square table for 8, 1.5x1.5 meter or approx 5x5 ft. Has a glass square in the middle about 1.2x1.2 ft. Really good looking wood and chairs included. Also considering Ikea extendable one http://www.ikea.com/ae/en/catalog/products/20176847/. There is another one that is smaller than this http://www.ikea.com/ae/en/catalog/products/90182307/#/30116264. I am not so sure about how good Ikea wood is though. Sorry for sounding like I am talking to myself, need to make a decision myself asap as delivery times are crazy. But definitely HC has a more solid looking wood, not brown/black though.

IKEA? The tables themselves aren't actually too expensive, but the chairs aren't cheap as you pay per chair. We have our eyes on a very nice solid wooden table, I can't remember the price, but don't think it was more than 500 AED.
Ladies, need your help please. I've been looking for months to find a kind of contemporary Dining Table that has a solid wooden top preferably stained in a dark brown colour. But the only ones I've seen seem to be extra long or well over my budget. Has anyone got any recommendations where to find one in Dubai. Even second hand is an option as proper would never really ages.
