We are travelling to Sri Lanka for 5 days in November and need some hotel recommendations. We plan on seeing Elephant orphanage and temples for first 2 days then a good hotel on beach for rest of holiday.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Thank you everyone for your hotel suggestions. A great response. I am looking at them all and hope to make a decision quickly. Can't wait to go now.

Villa Bentota is a really lovely hotel in Bentota. Apart from this hotel ( and casa Colombo - in Colombo), I was very disappointed with Sri Lanka as a holiday destination. Don't even waste your time going to Kandy. The Sri Lankan people are absolute dears though. did you go anywhere else or are you basing your disappointment on 2 hotels in 2 locations?? I stayed in Colombo, Kandy, Bentota and a little place beyond Galle. I personally didn't like it, but then I have heard some people who loved it as well as others who felt the same way I did. I was expecting it to be a little bit like Thailand or Malaysia but it's very very different in many ways.

Villa Bentota is a really lovely hotel in Bentota with fabulous grounds for lounging about on. It's on the beach too. If you are only going for 5 days I wouldn't be too adventurous with the distance you will need to cover- the roads are awful. Further down the coast towards Galle is no better and not worth the journey . I headed down there and ended coming back to villa Bentota. It's not too far from Colombo for getting back to the airport too - maybe 2 hours. Apart from this hotel ( and casa Colombo - in Colombo), I was very disappointed with Sri Lanka as a holiday destination. Don't even waste your time going to Kandy. The Sri Lankan people are absolute dears though.

Just outsidenof Nuwera Eliya is the Tea Factory converted into a hotel, it is clean, comfortable and offers guided walks of the local villages and tea plantations it is also into supporting the local community. For the beach there is the Amanwella just outside of Tangelle

If you're staying in Colombo and you want to get a sense of classical Sri Lanka try the Galle Face hotel. In Ahungalla the Heritance is good and if you're planning to stay in Kandy I would whole-heartedly recommend The Kandy House.

Have stayed in the Triton (now called the Heritance) in Ahungalla, and the Taj Exotica in Bentota. Has an amazing time in both. Both are a good three hour drive from Colombo depending on traffic though.

Tripadvisor/booking.com/expedia are all great sites to find hotels as they all have reviews. We used these for our recent trip to the US and honestly found some great deals and the reviews really help you to make the right choice. Sri Lanka is definitely on our list of places to visit. Have fun! edited by chants39 on 13/08/2011

We went last year and used www.theuniquetravel.co.uk who organised the whole itinerary for us, including our own driver/guide. I know the owner personally. They will negotiate the best deals for you depending on your budget.

U going to Bentota, Beruwala towards down south of the country or u going to Negomba, Trincomale which are also coastal area of Srilanka, anyways there are many good hotels by the sea, simply search for John Keells Group,Aitken Spence Group, Taj Group, Confifi Groups,Browns Group on google u will get good hotel options. There are too many hotels to name that's why am giving the group of companies name so u can search leisurely.
