Lovely anecdotes. JS, don't miss an opportunity to celebrate. When the day is gone, it's gone forever, no going back. And anyway, the rest just gets better and better.....

Oh my word, turning 30. The sane part of me wants to screech: 'suck it up, princess', but the gentler, kinder part of me is ... well, it's saying almost the same thing. Wow, you have your whole life ahead of you, seriously, and you'll be tacking a great many more years onto the end of your 'life expectancy' than many of US will! This is the prime of your life, with so many opportunities before you. And you probably don't even have any cellulite yet. :D We're here for a good time, not a long time, but you have a majorly long time ahead of you to get through, so make the most of it, stop crying in your coffee, and celebrate your life. You're worth it. :) PS. Gorgeous story, salsb. I want to be her when I 'grow up'. :D OMG!! "suck it up, princess" and "we are here for a good time, not a long time" are catchphrases I use all the time... are you my evil twin? My other 'standard' is: people who don't drink and don't smoke don't live longer, it just SEEMS longer. :D That doesn't seem to go down well with most peeps, I have discovered however ... ;) lol! I wonder exactly how many of us that went suck it up princess? Was exactly my first thought....

SalsB, love it - even shed a little tear - wish my mother were like that. Perdsonally, I hope I'm getting like this: Warning - When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple By Jenny Joseph When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells and run my stick along the public railings and make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain and pick the flowers in other people's gardens and learn to spit. You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat and eat three pounds of sausages at a go or only bread and pickles for a week and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes. But now we must have clothes that keep us dry and pay our rent and not swear in the street and set a good example for the children. We must have friends to dinner and read the papers. But maybe I ought to practice a little now? So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Love that sTory Salsb :) I am 60. I am loving it. I was terrified, sad that I was turning 60. It was the only birthday that ever bothered me. I always looked forward to new birthdays with fun, for the most part. It is also our 30th Anniversary next month. It could all be really scary, I could hang up my sneakers and stop living because I am now a SENIOR!!! HORRORS!! So, I dont like being a senior, dont feel like one, dont look like one but I am :). I am loving it. My husband whisked me away to a wonderful holiday in Phuket, our own private pool and we spent alot of time sunning naked lol....had a great time ......so things have fallen, things have gotten grey, there are wrinkles I am trying to control lol...but I feel great, am healthy and hope the next decade slows down a bit as 50's went way too fast .....so JS...enjoy your 30's. what a wonderful decade the 30's....I loved my 30's the best but now having been through 5 decades I am thinking I might just like my 60's the best :):):)!!!!

Ladies, I know that some of you have passed in this before and I really need to know if I am over reacting. Tomorrow is my birthday, I will be 30 Years old and I don’t feel happy about it at all. From 2 months ago I started to feel really down because of that but this week is the worse.. Yesterday I felt all day like I don’t want to work, I have even went to bed very early.. this morning I woke up really sad and on my way to work I was thinking “Today is the last day in my twenties” :( I have learned a lot in the past 10 years, I have grown up a lot and I am not that stupid little girl who came from a village and didn’t know much about city life. If I think about the good things that happened to me I can count a lot and I am proud of what I have achieved so far but I still feel sad about me reaching “30”.. I don’t know what to do.. I just feel like crying and I don’t really want to celebrate my birthday tomorrow :( 30 is not the end of this world ... i m also turning 30 in june ... its no big deal ... just another number ... hmmm 40 is a different thing for me too though

JS, this isnt a knock at you, but come on your reaching 30. You have you life ahead of you, its not great hardship, life is for living, dont beat yourself up just because your not twenty something anymore. I lost a friend last year he was 26 years old, Im so sure his last wish would of been to reach his next birthday. Enjoy life, age doesnt matter its how you feel and hopefully you are living a happy one. I received this email yesterday, really made me think!!!! hope you like it. The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.. She said, 'Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?' I laughed and enthusiastically responded, 'Of course you may!' and she gave me a giant squeeze.. 'Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?' I asked. She jokingly replied, 'I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids...' 'No seriously,' I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. 'I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!' she told me. After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this 'time machine' as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up. At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium.. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, 'I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.' As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, ' We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody! Can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets..' She concluded her speech by courageously singing 'The Rose.' She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those months ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be. These words have been passed along in loving memory of ROSE. REMEMBER, GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL. We make a Living by what we get. We make a Life by what we give.. Wow - I love that - thanks for sharing
