Thanks for the advice! We have decided to stay in the UAE and do things here - will be tons cheaper in the end.

If you have a UAE residence visa the 6 month passport validity rule does not apply to you for entering and leaving the UAE. However you would need to check the requirement for the country you are travelling to. Airlines are careful to check passport validity as they are receives fines from some countries if passengers arrives with less than the required length of validity. However if you are travelling back to the UAE and your passport is questioned just advise the check in agent that it does not apply if you have a UAE residence visa and ask them to check with their Dubai airport office to confirm this. edited by Fiat500 on 04/10/2012

I think it really depends on who is at the passport control desk :) I wouldn't take my chances though. It's always a good idea to sort out new passports by the 6 month point because that's when things could get tricky, especially if you need to apply for a visa.

I posted a similar question before the summer as our passports were expiring. We were fine leaving and we had a second passport (with longer expiry) for entering the holiday destination. We had no problem coming back to Dubai as our residence visas were fine even though there was less than month on the passport containing the visa.

My 5 yr old DD's passport was expiring in a month, we were allowed to leave the UAE but could not return without a new passport, even though she had a valid visa for another 2 years . I would say it is unlikely they will let you travel. Emirates Airline was adamant on the 6 month rule.

It may depend where you are going or the airline. Friends tried to go to Jordan last year and airline stopped them as had less than 6 months on passport.
