Trusting your cleaner to mind the baby?

We have a 5 mo bub and a fab part time cleaner who has been with us for 6 months and is great with him, though her english is almost non-existent.
In the past we have considered leaving her with the baby on outings but have always decided against it for the fear something could happen. Lately we asked the cleaner for a copy of her visa/ passport as security should we plan to go out and as i planned to go to work 1 day a week...but she came back that she could provide her sister's details as her sponsor won't allow it.
I am aware of the legal implications of this and it all just sounds a bit suspect so we have arranged an agency babysitter for this weekend.
Any advice on other avenues for part time babysitting? I have read through all old posts and it seems like this is definitely a common story among expats away from extended family networks.
TIA for any suggestions....also the agency we are using is homemaidsuae....any feedback?

Big risk if english is your lanuage and you are unable to communicate with the person looking after your Children. If an emergency arose ? Hope you manage to sort something out. thanks ladies - will try the babysitter this week and then use the agency next week for cleaning as well. time to say goodbye to our usual cleaner - sigh, she really is lovely. hopefully we can get a "regular" so at least little man can get used to a familiar face. appreciate the tips

....also the agency we are using is homemaidsuae....any feedback? I don't think she is using an illegal cleaner? Unless I am reading wrong? I suspect the agency won't allow her to have a copy of her doc's in case she was planning on trying to leave the agency to go onto OP's sponsorship which they wouldn't like. I know she isn't but the agency wouldn't take her word for it. I thought the agency was for the babysitter she was using this weekend-and didn't refer to the maid-now I am officially confused! No, it's not you, it's me... doh! Must ignore toddler and read more carefully!! :D

Wuffles you're right - the illegal one is her regular cleaning maid; the agency is the legal one she's called on for babysitting i think ;) i meant Wuffles :p edited by ashesf on 31/03/2011 Ah, now I have read and re-read OP's post you are right, I thought the cleaner was from Homemaids and she was looking for an agency babysitter! Silly Monkey!! OP.... get your cleaner from Homemaids too and save yourself AED 100 000! They are reliable and thorough and very quick! At least our girl was, could do our 3 bed villa and a huge pile of ironing in 4 hours, she was like a blur as she dashed round. Oh sigh, how I miss her...

Ps. We used to use homemaids just for cleaning and they were lovely. Looking at the website (http://www.homemaids.ae/) they also do babysitting, so maybe you could speak to them and ask if they have any qualified babysitters that can clean as well ;)

I would get a recommendation of particular maids that work for agencies. there must be people on here that have a fav agency babysitter? and yes, I would have an agency gal work for you part time so your child gets to know her..scary for the kiddo if he/she is left alone with a stranger ;(?

Would you leave your 5 month old with the maintenance guy, the gardener or any other random person that happens to make relatively regular appearances in your life? If so... My. Goodness. Me. If not, then maybe consider hiring someone legally who - shock horror - may actually be qualified to look after children. Maybe First Aid trained even, although that would really be pushing the boat out. Anyhow, back to the title. I do trust my cleaner (agency) to mind my children for very short periods of time. It turns out she was a trained social worker in the Philippines! Very much agree.

Apart from any other considerations you need a babysitter who can communicate clearly with you and others in English should an emergency arise

Anyway, the OP is looking for legal babysitting suggestions. She has never left her child with the illegal part-timer. OP, the best thing for you to do is a babysitting swap with another friend if that is possible.

Scratch, You shouldn't be hiring an illegal cleaner as you're putting your family, the sponsor and the maid at risk. In the past a blind eye was turned, but now they're really cracking down on illegal maids and there are huge fines as well as jail time/deportation. There are a few maids agencies who are able to provide cleaners as well as babysitters on a part time basis. Try: ReadyMaids www.readymaidsdubai.com Molly maids www.maids.ae I'm sure there's a few others that people could recommend for you.

If you are aware of the legal implications I'm not really sure why you are even considering leaving your child with her - do you know that you are running the risk of a huge fine - i think it's gone up to 100K Dhs not just you but also her sponsor.

How is she cleaning for you if she isn't under your sponsorship? Do you get her through an agency? Otherwise isn't she working illegally-or perhaps I am misunderstanding your post It seems that she has decided against having the illegal part-time cleaner babysit so she is looking for suggestions on how to find a good legal babysitter other than the one she will use this weekend.
