for heaven's sakes.....when you open your locker and if there is a little pouch with paper underwear, put them on. If there is not, chances are you dont need them. when you get to the masseuse, if she wants underwear and you are minus, she will tell you and give you the paper panties. No worries, or..just ask :) BTW, I have never been anywhere here where you had to wear your own underwear, they are always supplies as far as I know. <em>edited by SueB on 12/03/2013</em>

I am sure you don't need to be concerned as you use the " top spas" but there are spas of varying degrees here e.g. there are a few in the MOE area in hotels there where they have a specific written notice on the wall behind the desk - clear for all to see - about keeping underwear on and that the removal of it will result in immediate termination of the massage. Perhaps these are in a more " dodgy" area where customers are a bit less reputable than yourself . We encountered them on Entertainer deals. I use a spa (also considered " top" ) which has a written spa policy to the effect I mentioned but I am keeping that my secret. Regarding the municipal code, this is only probably known to those who operate clubs and spas but as said before there are etiquette guidelines and as with many other things, it can vary on who does your inspection as to how much they will enforce on any one visit.

Please advise which spas? I am now concerned about visiting them. It is actually the code of many of the best spas here that underwear is a MUST - the ones they provide many spas have a WRITTEN code here that underwear MUST be kept on Fortunately I have looked at three top spas in Dubai so far and found no written note to say you must keep your underwear on Talise (Jumeriah), ShuiQi (Atlantis) and One & Only. In fact at the One & Only it clearly states: [i'>For your convenience a robe, towels and slippers will be provided. During all treatments you will be properly draped for ensured privacy.[/i'> Nothing about disposable panties here. In fact it specifically states you will be draped appropriately to ensure privacy. <em>edited by RuthM on 12/03/2013</em>

Lets simplify this: Body scrub/Moroccan bath - disposable undies Therapeutic massage - no undies if you want one of the strongest muscles in your body (the one helps support your back and legs) massaged, wear undies if you want it skipped (if you want them to massage it through undies then you'll probably have to ask) Sports massage - just uncover areas being worked on, for manipulation you may not even need to uncover anything Thai massage - wear loose cotton clothing And don't worry unless you have a problem with your coccyx they won't even see your butt crack they use the sheet to wrap around you like a thong. Here is some information about massage draping (beware contains some nudity): http://cmabw.com/wordpress/2011/massage-draping/ For the record I'm a bit of a prude and won't be having a Brazilian anytime soon. edited by RuthM on 12/03/2013 Why do we need it simplified? It's each person's individual preference. Sorry I thought you said: It is actually the code of many of the best spas here that underwear is a MUST - the ones they provide. I must be mistaken. edited by RuthM on 12/03/2013 Let me clarify - it is obvious that for a massage on a calf muscle or whatever that you don't need to take your underwear off . Likewise it is also obvious if you want an **** massage then you would want to take your underwear off. It is also obvious that for a scrub or similar they will not want bits going where they should not and they have Spa Etiquette to this effect written in their spa menu - if it is the kind of place that would have one of these. It is also obvious to anyone who has ever seen or had a Thai Massage often done in public in Thailand that you keep your clothes on. Regarding written codes, there do exist Ministry directives as regards appropriate dress , behaviour and nudity in changing rooms and spas and there are often signs to this effect ( and a place may not pass inspection if such signs are not displayed and adhered to). It is also often stated as I said above. Regarding your choice, ultimately it IS your choice but a spa may refuse to treat you. <em>edited by spongemonkey on 12/03/2013</em>

No way I'd remove my undies for a massage! Also during a Moroccan bath. The lady gave me disposable knickers. No thanks lol, I wear shorts and a top. Some parts of my body are not to be seen, not even by another woman. But I guess any well trained beautician or masseuse knows how to respect that and work around it. Then I'll skip the bum-massage :p Same here, I am a prude, and I don't care whether the lady working in the spa would think it or not :) no brazillian wax or bum massage for me lol I have never had a Brazillian in my life, no woman gets to see my bits lol. Prude and Proud! nothing to be proud of, be sure! Oh really, and why not?

Lol 'Prude and Proud' could be a catchy name for a business venture, one that makes more conservative clothing, or swimsuits for those of us not wanting to put our bits on display in skimpy bikinis. Even thinking about brazillian waxes makes me blush (haha), my upbringing I guess :). I feel sorry for the women who have to do this job, they do not get paid enough imo, not a job I could see myself doing, nor massaging bare bottoms.

Wow, whats all this hostility ;) my opnion is that massages are to be enjoyed so do whatever your comfortable with. you are a paying customer and the last thing you need to feel is uncomfortable. So if you are happy getting massaged with all or none of your clothes then so be it! I think i'll go have one today, with panties and maybe even leggings..... it does get chilly in there ! morning ladies :D

All off. Keep your underwear on and the therapist will think you're a prude and won't touch your glutes or piriformis. Take it off and you'll be thankful when all that butt tension is released! The therapist won't just whip the towel off for all to be seen. A good therapist will only uncover a small section of your butt at a time to be massaged so your modesty is kept. Apart from which it is so much more comfortable. It is actually the code of many of the best spas here that underwear is a MUST - the ones they provide. I don't think a therapist will think you are a prude if you keep it on .....................odd thing to say really... I love the way some people on these forums like to personalise everything. [i'>Prude: a woman who shows or affects extreme modesty[/i'> Keeping underwear on = protecting your modesty. Nothing odd there then. I've never worn underwear for a therapeutic massage in Dubai and I haven't been arrested yet. Typically spas provide their own underwear for when you are having a body scrub or similar where you will not be as well covered with a sheet and you have to get up during the treatment to shower. I have worn lots of clothing for sports massage however but then they more commonly focus on specific areas, and do not use long massage strokes where underwear gets in the way, especially if they are using oils. My sports massage has predominantly focused on my calves so I have worn shorts and a t-shirt. In a thai massage I wear lightweight clothes but that is mostly stretching where covering with a sheet is impractical and they massage through your clothes with no oil. If the therapist isn't capable of covering a client appropriately with a sheet and moving the sheet to cover the client whilst massaging then clearly that are not properly trained. Oddly all the massage therapists I have had thus far in Dubai have been very good at ensuring my modesty is protected so I suspect they may be trained in how to handle naked clients. None have run out the room screaming in any case! If you're uncomfortable taking it off then keep your underwear on, but for the traditional massage experience then no underwear is the way to go. Btw it is not acceptable for your therapist to ask you to take them off. edited by RuthM on 12/03/2013 edited by RuthM on 12/03/2013 As you have quoted me then I have to assume that " people personalising things" applies to me ? For saying that many spas have a WRITTEN code here that underwear MUST be kept on ? How is that personalising things? I am not the only one who said that a therapist would not think you were a prude if you left spa pants on - that's why they provide them. I found it an odd thing to say as these therapists see so many people from so many places and have seen it all I am sure. I am also sure that the last thing on their minds is about what a client is wearing or not wearing! I know what the definition of a prude is so I don't think anyone on EW needs your definition of it. This wasn't odd but it certainly was condescending.

I'm a trained massage (sports) therapist. NO problem wearing knickers...therapist will either slide to side as required or massage over the knickers.

if you are more comfortable wearing underwear wear it....the masseuse will not think anything, possibly that you are modest. but, wear a thong so she can massage your bottom :)...it really does hold a heck of alot of tension in some people :)

Oh that has so reminded me of a spa I went to in Slovakia with DD's quite a few years ago. We were all having massage treatments one after the other....me going first. Well first shock was it was a male masseuse and whilst I kept bikini on it didn't offer any modesty, plus the curtains between cubicles weren't closed and everything on everybody was on show! My first thought was oh.... My babies are doing this next! Well not quite babies as they were 24 and 19 at the time..but still my babies! It was quite a shock to my system.... Well eldest DD thought the masseuse was so good she booked another massage for a few days later, I then realised they are more "women of the world" than I will ever be!

The spas I've been to provide disposable knickers so I take my knickers off and use that instead. I thought that's what most people do. Reminded me of last month, I went to an outdoor spa in Sri Lanka (Unawatuna) and the spa was highly-recommended on Tripadvisor. The place looked nice but the massage tables are only separated by thin curtains, and I even had to ask the therapist to close the windows. She asked me to strip down, totally naked. Even with the windows closed, the wind just flies it off. I felt uncomfortable at first since people were coming in and there were other customers getting massages in other tables (some were even males!). But then again, the massage was really good and in the end didn't give a **** since I was in a foreign country anyway. Ironically, on my way back to the hotel, I saw an old friend from Dubai who at that time was also spending holidays there!! Could have been a very awkward situation! :)

A very good question... I've met a chinese that used to go homes to do massage, and she told me that some ladies and even men, go totally nude and they flip over without caring if the towel is covering them or not... I was so shocked!!! and i am still shocked everytime i have to think about it... but anyway, this is too personal and differ from someone to another... i guees there are some people that even shy to take off the t-shirt in front of a stranger from the same ***

All off. Some of your most important muscles are in no other place than your BUTT. The gluteus maximus is one of the strongest muscles in your body! They support your back and if there is tension in your butt it can cause all kinds of problems. Low back pain, sciatica (your sciatic nerve runs through your butt), leg tension, tight hip flexors. Keep your underwear on and the therapist will think you're a prude and won't touch your glutes or piriformis. Take it off and you'll be thankful when all that butt tension is released!
