Ahhhh..... the old "If you don't like it, why don't you leave" chestnut. Trust me, the day my villa sells, I'll be the one flinging stuff in packing boxes, but until that day... :) But then this thread isn't about why people are here is it? edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 07/10/2011

where do you shop ? and most of the local fruit n veg tastes really nice even if it doesn't look as "perfect" as the imported stuff.. I shop everywhere, and i buy local and organic whenever i get the chance, but i do not find that most of the time:((

Err, I never told anyone to leave did I?? I was just making a comparison that at home I never needed to check fruit/veg for mould, because it was rare to get it. Here, I always check because the occurrence is much more frequent. As Was mentioned earlier, this would be because everything is imported. I guess a better way of putting it would be "I miss non-imported, local & native fruit & veg" People are kind of taking comments here a bit too seriously I think. This was meant to be what do YOU miss from home? That is what I miss, I was not passing comment on whether it is 'right' or not, just pointing out the difference. As you said, the point of being an expat is to see a different lifestyle. We're comparing the lifestyle are we not? are you talking about my post, cause it is also not directed at you:)) i do actually agree with you about the mould, i am sick and tired of finding mould in my veggies and fruits that cost a fortune weekly..i was commenting on the post of "metness" edited by Annabelle09 on 07/10/2011

PS Yes actualyl I do mind if the fruit or veg is mouldy because a) it is not exactly cheap for me and b) I have gotten very sick from eating mouldy food! I am glad I do not have to resort to eating spoiled food just to eat, but in my personal case I can afford to eat fairly well, something which I am grateful for * do not need other people pointing out to me- believe me, I am aware of it more than ever since moving to Dubai & seeing people who have nothing compared to me (who is not super rich by my home country standards) There are things you can eat slightly spoiled, and things that can kill you. So no, I do not think it is being fussy to be choosy if my food is spoiled or not. If you can eat it and not get sick, great!

quite staggering that so many ppl are so unhappy here...bit naive i suppose and i guess nothing is that simple but it begs the question - why are you still here ?? Good question Sue62!! Not sure how people can complain about some very basic needs such as 'food, 'air' and 'water' and still continue to live here? If any of these are a problem for me, i would be out of this place on the next flight. No matter how much better off i am in Dubai there is no way i am sacrificing the very basic needs in life just for a tax free income or whatever else it is that brings us all here. I am glad that you are lucky not to find fruits and vegetables with mould till now, or you do not mind one of ur basic needs to be mouldy??? Also, do not you know that sometimes it is just not that simple to leave..Some pp are here because of jobs, money, or basically they cannot just return home! not all expats are here to make some money and go buy houses in their countries! some pp cannot return to their home countries in the first place..so please before you judge others, look around you and not just at a certain sector of expats here then decide! it will broaden up ur horizon of being expat to a great extent! i did say "nothing is that simple" not judging - just wondering why so many ppl constantly complain about the place yet are still here !! and no, i haven't yet bought anything that has been mouldy - the fruit and veg here is usually reallly nice...especially the fruit.. My post was not directed at what you wrote sue62 but at what the other poster " Metness" wrote ( basic needs etc etc) edited by Annabelle09 on 07/10/2011

I find the comments about 'cheap books' interesting... I find the books in Dubai cheaper than back home. Recently I was in Sydney, found the book in a series I'm reading, it was $$19.95-24.95AU depending on the store! Bought the same book on my return here from Dubai Mall for 34dhs- which at the time was less than AUD$10!!! I do miss being able to walk everywhere if I want to, driving (no way will I attempt it here, I do not have the disposition for it) and I miss being able to be completely in control of my life, as there are rules in my accommodation about what I can/can't do, eg visitors have to sign in and I can't have a friend stay overnight after a night out unless they work for my company, which can be a pain sometimes. Don't get me wrong I love my job & I know there are far, far stricter employers out there. BUt sometimes it'd be nice t ohave a last-minute get together, knowing my friends can come over for an all-night DVD marathon without having to go home at midnight. Slumber parties just aren't the same here... LOL As far as food goes, it's ok here and I think I just miss the familiar brands rather than the actual items- I can usually find something to fill in. Having said that- FRESH FRUIT! I can taste the difference, and get a bit bored of constantly checking the underneath of packaged fruit etc to check if it's mouldy- something that wouldn't be allowed back home (as another poster mentioned, probably because of the less wasteful attitude towards food here)

The only reason we were in Doha was because DH was made redundant at the age of 59 after 35 years with the same company. There were few QS jobs back home and he got the chance of a 2 year contract. We spent our 2 years in the desert, made the most of it and returned home with loadsa dosh. We've finished paying off the mortgage, renovated the house to our satisfaction, DH is retired, I'm semi retired, bought a narrowboat down south and are loving life!! As for decent curries. We loved Indian food (so we thought until we had a holiday in India and tasted the real thing!!) Our local restuarant is brilliant but still not quite as good as the food we had while we toured that amazing country.

Not unhappy here, the question was just what I missed ..... one thing I've learnt about living here - take nothing for granted, then its a real treat when you get it or see it, as for the curry can't beat a proper takeaway curry, but each to their own

Food, air, water, grass, people, common sense, sense of humor, the flag, the national anthem, the TV, my house, my back yard, the sound of my kids giggling with their friends in the front yard, Traders Joes, Marshalls, outlet stores, shopping, kids teachers (who became our friends), the mornig show on radio, the road of roses radio show, the gym, my hair dresser, urghhhhhhhhh, I miss the States.. God Bless America!! sorry but i thought the question was 'what do you miss most [b'>that you can't get here'[/b'>[u'>[/u'>? Are you not finding food and air here or did you forget to add some adjective(s) before some of the words, may be something like 'good food', 'clean air' would have made more sense?
