regarding the dates, I posted on EW a few weeks ago. My visitor wanted to take dates back to Sydney, Australia and did so successfully. She declared all the dates on her customs card and only purchased the dates that were pre-packed with plastic wrap under the box lid. Also re Antiques Museum it took me 1.5hrs from Jumeirah. I got totally lost and their directions did not help me at all!! They say they are close to the Gold and Diamond Park, but not really. I have just pulled out their business card that has a map on the back. They are very close to HomeCentre warehouse. I can email u a scanned copy of the back of the card if you want. When I re-entered Sheik Zayed Rd after finishing at the shop I took notice of what shops were closest on Sheik Zayed Road and I can tell you they are behind the Volkswagen dealership and close to the Nestle Building. Not sure how much this helps. could you mail that to me on [email protected]? edited by ChiggyWiggy on 01/02/2011

I normally put at least three maids in my suitcase, one driver and a person whose sole job is to protect me from strong winds (by standing in front of me). Love it

CW, let me see if I can get a map, I am hopeless at explaining where the antiques museum is and I am normally good with directions. Its one of the funniest places I have ever been to here, you can even get roses made out of g-strings...! Plus their picture framing isnt too bad either.

Chiggy, . I have seen harem pants in Karama in the little store that has the sun dresses. If you are coming from the fish market its in the third block on your right, very left hand corner. Same block as the bike store and its only very litte. Maybe the textile souk would also have them.

U must always declare going into OZ. Don't u watch Border security on TV? If u tell them then usually its OK but if u don't they really frown upon it. I got pulled up once with pasta in a sealed bag from Italy! Look at a really nice Pasmina for the ladies. Perfumes (local ) for both is always a hit. Those painted camels and even a container to burn oud in. I do watch Border Security-declare all the wooden items etc-I just had a fixed idea-apparently incorrected-that packaged chocolate coated dates were not declarable........don't worry-will be declaring them from now on in-but wonder why customs didn't comment on them when they opened my case???????

I'm ashamed to say I have never declared dates-didn't realise you had to till I read the recent thread about it-that being said-even on the odd times my suitcase has been searched no-one told me off for having them at Melbourne customs-and they weren't hidden

CT, we always declare them and they are packaged, never had an issue. What state? Even if they are declared they are not allowed into WA. Maybe it is different elsewhere as I know WA is more stringent than other areas. [i'>I am sure there was an thread about dates and Australia recently but the search function is not working for me today.[/i'>

I find the packets of all the Arabic biscuits/sweets nicely wrapped are always popular too. I have never had a problem getting these or dates into the country if they are declared.

Hand embroidered textiles from the textile souk as well as wooden hand painted decorations (if it is around Christmas)-Arabic name necklaces for special friends, chocolate dates and mamoul for the mother in law, local recipe books and books about Dubai

Dates, Shisha, karama specials, for my niece and nephew an abaya and a dish dash, camels and finally ME, the best pressy of all. I would not take dates as there is a high possibility that they will be confiscated as we have very strict rules about organic matter. Some people have managed to get them in but I would not risk it. Who are you buying for? If you give us their age and s*x we might be able to give better suggestions. DH's says their regulations are pretty strict about letting food (not properly sealed) in their country, yet my aunt, who's a citizen took Zattar from here (packed in carrefour's spice stall) in a plastic bag with a green tape on it. Want to take stuff for my aunt/uncle (60+) and friends and cousins (all of them are around my age-- 26 to 29) CycloneT..I know you can help me on this. I am counting on you.Aunty and Cousins had asked for Harem Pants. They are quite fascinated by it.

The dates I've taken in the past are the packaged ones in the supermarket, the ones that are individually wrapped. Almond, then date, then chocolate, iykwim, everyone seems to love them! The other big hit is babushka type arabic dolls, haven't had a drama with the wood, touch wood... Of course now that I've gone a few years their gift is the pleasure of my company!
