Comparative to living in your home country or your child hood/upbringing? Would you consider buying branded goods materialistic comparative to shopping around for equal quality at less cost? How important are material goods to you in your life?

I still miss my china and silver, buried in boxes back in the States, and I can't pass Villeroy and Boch without having to go inside, and it still rankles me to be dining off cheap Ikea plates and cutlery after nearly four years in Dubai. I had such a pretty kitchen and could set a beautiful table for all occasions back home and I dearly miss it. That's so sad, Tallybalt; I feel for you. I couldn't have moved out here unless I knew I could bring my nice wedding silver/plate here with me, and all the other nice kitchen-y things I've acquired over time. The rest of the house, while not a dump by any stretch, can go hang just so long as I have my nice kitchen/dining things. Makes me feel more at home [and I'm a Cancerian; we love our hearth!'>. :D

I think I'm being dim (nothing unusual there). What's stealth wealth? Daylight robbery I'm familiar with, living here :D. Not being show offy about having money. If you buy an expensive handbag, you'd go for a BV one that was subtle rather than having one that had the biggest label on it.....going for the subtle approach rather than bling, bling, bling. In Dubai we have both of course and don't we know it! I guess those that aren't so materialistic would go for the subtle one whilst being able to invest in a more quality, or apparent quality, product. Those that were materialistic I guess would go for the obvious maybe?

I couldnt possibly waste too much money on myself, Im a creature of habit, had nothing years ago so never have been able to justify spending mass amounts, when it came to my kids then thats a different story, my spending is now on the little ones, enjoy spoiling them. I buy brand soups, tea and coffee thou.

Yes and no. I always go for quality insofar as possible, but only because I intend to have it for a long time. I'm still wearing clothes I bought ten years ago (oh Lord, there's me turning into my mother). I don't care about brand labels and prefer not to have any visible logos on my clothing because it's only free advertizing for the brand. They're not paying me to walk around in their clothes, are they, so why should I volunteer to do it for free? But I am very materialistic when it comes to certain things. I must have spent a small fortune on kitchen and cooking supplies and tools, and back home I have boxes filled with All Clad and Le Creuset pots and pans, along with top of the line mixers and blenders. I still miss my china and silver, buried in boxes back in the States, and I can't pass Villeroy and Boch without having to go inside, and it still rankles me to be dining off cheap Ikea plates and cutlery after nearly four years in Dubai. Not important as they used to be when i was younger..... Quality is more important than label. Agree! The high school I went to was total snobbery. On free dress day it was all about the labels and g0d forbid you wore something from the sale rack. Ashamed to admit that I was a total label victim then, but I was still in school. I bought my first piece of clothing from Target (the horror!!) about a year after I left school, Target clothes when in school would land you on the dreaded hit list. Now, I LOVE Target!!!!!! LOL I still have my fav labels (don't we all?) but what I dislike is when the clothes have their label plastered all over the garment for everyone to know you shop at XXX store. Quality is far more important to me than label.

I would conscider us to be the least materialist people in the world! I was raised frugally, and paying prices for labels gives me horrors. Having said that, I like nice things...particularly in my home, but what I conscider nice, or things that I love maybe quite different from others. Art, pieces from our travels, furntiure that says comfort, put your feet up, be at home. Other things I will spend money on because they are practical...it makes no sense to have cheap knives if they don't function as a knife should, or cheap pots if they burn your hands as a for instance. So, while I am not a label girl I do admire quality, and will look for it, and get real pleasure out of finding it. When I look at our daughter she has sooo much compared to when both hubby and I were kids (and HE is beyond frugal, he's just downright stingey, but that comes from once having everything, to having nothing) but we still love that she is turning into a well travelled bratling, that books are treasures and that we can give her these experiences and supply us all with books galore...we know the difference, and hope that she will grow to appreciate that difference too.

Labels are for soup cans ;) That said, a good quality product often comes with a label. One has to be smart about the labels though. E.g. sunglasses - many of the top labels also have some of the worst quality lenses possibly fitted. Am I materialistic? I would hope there is difference between just buying for the sake of buying vs buying a good quality product/label bacause it will last and I like it. Who doesn't like the feel good factor when out shopping and acquiring something really nice? Yip I am a snob when it comes to buying something nice :\: I do think an even more interesting question would be: [i'>would you consider yourself living in a disposable society?/ Do you realise how disposable society has become?[/i'> Quality of products have fallen dramatically with manufacturers producing products following "Planned Obsolescence" - consumers products are made to last a shorter period than before and the minute something is launched, versions 2 and 3 are already in production. Do people still repair broken irons, vacuum cleaners, hairdryers? Probably not. This realisation hit me square between the eyes since living in Penang. My experience thus far is that everything, literally everything is repaired and not merely replaced here and the realisation of how disposable Dubai living over 8 years became for us at least, was a sobering one. The maid is probably still walking smiling and repairing all the "cast off's" . . .

How important are material goods to you in your life? If having things we didn't have as a children but everyone has today - car, tv, holidays that aren't staying with relatives - then yes I'm materialistic. But if its buying something because its the latest model or brand then no - I look for quality, value and comfort everytime and am not too fussed to be thought odd because of it. I am as my family will tell me frequently the only person on the planet who still can't master a microwave (its a great breadbin and plate warmer) and I never did own a video recorder but I still wear my 10 year old Jaeger trousers to parties.

After the disappearance of my jewellery the other day I have started to think I'm unappreciative of the nice things I have and need to take more care of them. Does that make me materialistic? I loathe obvious labels, though, so I guess I'm not. I'd go for subtle quality over a blaring logo any day. i believe in stealth wealth. ;) So, not daylight robbery, then? probably am victim of that, yes! :(

yes, reading back the post, it was tooo easy. And I just thought it was a reaction to my (gorgeous and much loved) Mum being a total slob... But come on miss b, are you materialistic? I don't think there's any shame in it, just own it! My BFF is def. materialistic, but at least she owns it AND she's a lot of fun, so no shame :)

I can't tell my Prada from my Primark, or my Chanel from my Carrefour, but that may just make me unfashionable rather than unmaterialistic..

Can I say not much without sounding like a smug A%4e? I need money when I need it, and apart from that I really, really don't care how nice your jewellery is, or your car, or how much money you or your DH makes! Are you fun? Do you have anything interesting to say? Am I going to have a laugh with you? Having said THAT, I am insane about nesting and having a clean house, with good food, ready to welcome friends and loved ones at the drop of a hat. So does that make me materialistic? confused...
