DH and I have decided we want to try and get pregnant over the next year, but I’d really like to get some advice beforehand – what vitamins I should be taking in the lead up, when we should be ‘practicing’ during my cycle etc. It’s all new and very exciting and I have loads of questions, so would appreciate any advice you have about great books to read, or fertility centres here in Dubai.

Thanks so much :)

hehe - more than cycles, vitamins, tests and whatnot, the biggest and best bit of advice to conceive is to relax and enjoy yourselves. Don't run and get a test 2 weeks after you think you might have - let nature take its course and enjoy the experience and the surprise of missing your first period kind of unexpectedly! As for the mechanics of it, sperm lasts up to 4 days, so if you Do It every couple of days around when you're likely to ovulate, one of the little swimmers is more than likely to get through. The theory is that apparently male swimmers are faster, but short-lived and the female swimmers are slower but live longer... sooo if you do it a few days before you ovulate, then the male ones will die off and the girl ones will hit the jackpot, but if you Do It when you've already ovulated, the little boys will get there first. However, you have to remember that a healthy pregnancy is a minor miracle. Not every sperm-meets-egg results in a viable embryo and not every embryo results in a viable foetus. That's another reason why I feel strongly about not testing very early on... let nature do its thing. Very interesting theory - however, still quite a big change as who knows when I will ovulate! (I know I can have a guess, but it is only a guess...)

So exciting! I'd recommend the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler and in conjunction, the website www.fertilityfriend.com. I learned so much I never knew about my body and my cycle and I honestly believe these two together were what finally tipped the scales for us after almost four years of no contraception. We weren't die-hard 'trying' until the last year, but still... that's a long time for no accidents. Take the time to learn about your cycle and then you'll be able to maximise your chances of conception simply by making sure you're at it on the right days! You might find you have a cycle that's a little out of the ordinary - still medically 'normal' but not necessarily textbook - and knowing exactly what goes on when saves so much heartache and wasted effort. And the big bonus of knowing your cycle is knowing exactly when you should do a pregnancy test. There's nothing worse than thinking you must be pregnant because your period is six days late when in fact your period isn't six days late, you ovulated six days late. Good luck! And if you need an ear to bend just leave me a note on here. I could ramble on about Fertility Awareness all day :D.

Crudely put, check your knickers, this will tell you when you're ovulating. Think egg white. Really?? I never knew this!

My advice would be don't stress too much, you are more likely to get pregnant if you are happy and not worrying about things. Take folic acid from now until you are 12 weeks pregnant. And the advice I got is to "do it" every other day so that your DH's "seed" isn't "stale" but not too "diluted". Good luck!!!

congratulations to you!!!! Yes it is really exciting, especially when you trying to conceive and you have the two week wait to see if you are pregnant or not! I would say start taking pregnacare, or any prenatal vitamins with contain folic acid, this you can get from your local chemist Normally you should start 'trying' between 10-14 days after your cycle, when I was trying I would start 7 days after my cycle just to be on the safe side, you never really know when you will ovulate. A lot of websites recommend that you lay in bad an extra 15 mins after the 'deed' to make sure the swimmers have enough time to reach your tubes, if you get up too soon, they could end up in the toilet:( Also you have to learn to listen to your body, there are signs that tell you when you are ovulating and ready. This is the website I used to track my cycle and plot out when my most fertile days were: http://www.mymonthlycycles.com/

Folic acid etc.. the best advice, though, is to just be happy (this decreases your acidity level and increases your chances of conception) . The chances of concieving are better if you are.... how do I put it?... satisfied..;)
