Help! DD is wheezing a lot (she started the week with croup and is finishing it with bronchiolitus) and we are due to fly tomorrow am. The doctor has said that DD can travel and that we would simply need to use a nebuliser in the morning prior to the flight and again on arrival. I asked him if he thought that I should also take the nebuliser on board in case DD starts wheezing a lot at which he responsed that airlines had them onboard in case of emergencies so I wouldn't need to bother.

I have just called Emirates who had no clue whether there was a nebuliser on board and said that I couldn't take my nebuliser on board as it's a main operated device (I couldn't find a battery operated one) and this was not allowed for security reasons. I then asked what would happen if DD suddenly stopped breathing, would I actually be allowed to use the nebuliser (or would I have to sit and watch my DD wheeze for the remainder of the flight...or worse) at which the telephone operator responded that we shouldn't fly if we were in doubt.

Help! Has anyone ever had to use a nebuliser on an Emirates flight? Can anyone offer any advice?

When I was crew we didn't carry a nebuliser on board and I can't remember ever having a passenger use their own. That's not to say they won't allow it, though. The best people to speak to would be the medical department but I'm afraid I don't have their contact details. Probably best to call Emirates HQ and ask them.

I'd be resheduling my flight if I were you. It's not just your DD's chest, the flying could effect her ears too. I honestly think you should hold off for a few days and get her a bit stronger. Are you nebulizing her with saline? Or did the doc prescribe something else? Poop little dear. Hope she's better soon and I hope you escape it. We have all had it recently, and it was not pleasant. Probably why I'm so anti the idea of putting her on a plane. I felt like absolute poo, if someone had dragged me onto a flight I would have hated it.

sorry to be ignorant, but is nebuliser like an oxygen bottle? as far as i know, airlines do provide pre-approved oxygen bottles provided with doctor's written request.. i think you will have to pay for that tho.. i'm not sure the way to it... or how many days it will take for approval.. strange how emirates personal doesn't know it...or rather not strange :D S

I know I'm not helping or answering the question but do you HAVE to go tomorrow? Any chance of rescheduling for a couple of days? I know it's hard enough sometimes travelling with children, least of all ones that aren't 100%. Just seems like it's going to be fairly stressful for you either way. I assume you've already thought of this but even if you incur an extra fee it would surely be worth it....? If you decide to postpone your flight, just call your doctor and I'm sure he will write a letter to emirates that your child is too ill to travel. They are very accommodating and will rebook without penalty. No help with the nebulizer question, but if it were me I would take mine on board. Like Guinness says, there are plenty of plugs. edited by granola on 25/06/2011

I always bring my inhaler for asthma - could you bring one of those? But I strongly believe that if you brought a nebulizer on board and you needed to use it, they would find a way. There are plugs on board so you'd have no trouble getting them to help you use it. In six years of travelling Emirates with small children, I've had all sorts of issues and the staff have always been great.
