I'd imagine it'd be a d@mn sight easier to diagnose if you looked at the rash for more than three seconds and actually paid attention to what the parents were telling you instead of taking a cursory glance - only when prompted - and advising a trip to the beach and Sudocrem.
When we took DS to his regular paed the next morning it turned out if we'd followed the ER guy's advice and put Sudocrem on, we'd have made it a whole lot worse exactly because it's a barrier cream. It would have trapped all the fungal spores in underneath the cream in a warm, wet environment and they would have had a field day. The paed also said any rash that appears to be spreading is probably not your average nappy rash, as nappy rash should be localised to the perianal region.
sydneygal, just try and let air get to it as much as possible before you get him to the dr and then see what he says. Hope the wee guy's OK!
I do not know who you are referring to? I am not advising anything, other than to watch out for misdiagnosis as i was told that fungal infections are easy to assume when there is a rash ( that is by no means the rash you described)..my DD was misdiagnosed once with a fungal infection and was prescribed an anti fungal cream while she in fact did not..so if the redness does not disappear in a day or two, it might be a fungal infection and trip to the doc is necessary as I was told...
yeah I know...I gave the pear because he seemed bunged up from the babyrice!! ahhh!
guess I can try banana, but the ones I have are quite unripe still so may need to wait a bit...
DS also started weaning 2 weeks ago and last week we tried roasted banana which is what made his bum raw after 3 poos within the same day which got more and more runny.
I know doc already suggested what to do but thought I would share what worked for DS last week - lots of air too and I just used talcum powder for the nappy time which worked wonders.

kiwi - which particular foods would you recommend? (his poo is more runny now after taking away the babyrice and upping the pear! ahhh)
my MIL says that pear helps constipation, hence your baby poo is more runny
try giving banana puree

thanks for all the advice ladies. Dr said to just keep airing and lay off the wipes - to use bepanthen instead of sudocrem (which she doesn't like and thinks can make it worse). Am also going to try and find something called orobase (which is something dentists use apparently!) which stops any wetness getting in which she said I can use under the bepanthen if I can find it. It's not spreading, just looks quite red and raw poor mite. Didn't give any solids this lunchtime and will only give a bit tonight. He actually doesn't seem that bothered by it at least but don't want it to get any worse...

Started my 6 mth DS on solids about 2 weeks ago and he's been happily eating away and increasing the amounts too. So far he has had babyrice, pear, apple, carrot, swede and sweet potato so nothing too controversial. (
actually babyrice is a bit controversial in some circles ;), I never gave DS babyrice and if I were you I really wouldn't bother with it, its just a multivitamin plus starch, nothing else and completely pointless at best and as you've found can bung them up. Most of the other foods you list are all quite starchy too, better to give mostly simple carbs plus protein at this early stage if you want to avoid digestive upset. Make sure you breastfeed right before the solids as BM contains amylase which breaks down the complex carbs as your DS wan't make much of that himself until he is older.
If the rash is a small ring around the anus it is probably food related, I'm guessing unless its really bad your Dr will just tell you to do as you've been doing already, the best nappy rash cream I've ever used is the ecostore one from NZ (maybe available in Oz too if you're having visitors any time soon), when you use the sudocream whack it on seriously thickly rather than rubbing in a thin spread. Change nappies often and plenty of bare-bum time outdoors if possible. A bit of table salt in the bath helps kill any fungus.
You can always cut his solids right back and give him time to recover, you don't want to up the amounts too quickly anyway if you can avoid it.
Actually it is not easy to diagnose fungal infections. I would say if the rash does not disappear in a day or two with bepanten and/or sudocream, then it usually is a fungal infection, and a trip to the doctor is necessary..
Good luck and hope your lo feels better soon..
I've never found that pawpaw ointment works all that well on nappy rash unfortunately - great for other sutff tho! If you can get it dry - as it lots of air and nappy free time you'll find that the sudocreme or bepanthen will stick properly.
ETA my LO had a shocker rash whilst in hospital after birth and the nurses used to lie him on his belly with his bottom sticking in the air and would use the oxygen tubing and tape it to his crib and blow it on his bottom :) It dried it out in no time - so maybe a little fan to blow air on his bottom...

Alimart - my 2 DS wear amber teething necklaces, got them from baby souk dot com. bought it for the little one who was teething, and older one wanted one as well! i think it helped, we have had no issues with teething at all, no raw bums or sleepless nights. Dubaicat - they are not for chewing on, it's more a natural pain reliever. the specific amber they are made of releases tiny amounts of resin into their skin as they wear them....and it's this which is supposed to act as a pain reliever. a bit like copper bracelets and arthritis.
re raw bums though, if either of mine ever suffer from any redness, make sure you dry the area super well, ie when you touch it it should feel smooth and feel no dampness, put some olive oil on the area, then put sudocrem on top as a barrier. as a rule, barrier cream is just that, so if the area is not completely dry before putting on the barrier cream, then you end up trapping the moisture in as well as keeping new dampness out, if that makes sense!
hope his bum gets better soon!
If it's the teething necklaces you wear and they chew on there's a lady who advertises them on Dubizzle sometimes.
Re the rash, is it spreading? DS had horrendous nappy rash that the ER doctor at City misdiagnosed (a whole other thread - grrr) and turned out to be a fungal infection. It started looking like regular nappy rash but then started spreading out to his legs, all up over his boy bits, down his bum cheeks, everywhere. The skin around his bum started blistering and peeling and was all wet and white, he had tiny red spots everywhere and he screamed and screamed when he had a wee or a poo or had his nappy changed.
Have to run and feed Elin downstairs, will post again in a min xx
Bepanthen is what we use and its great stuff ;) Hope it clears soon hun, but happy to hear it doesn't seem to be bothering him!
Re the teething necklaces - I got DD's from Favorite Things at Marina Mall. I believe BabySouk also sell them.. https://www.facebook.com/babysouk
HTH
that's fantastic, so pleased for you :)
hope you can find yourself a necklace.
yes hope his rash clears...he just woke up from a nap and is lying nappy-less on some towels again!
That's fantastic news, seems like we are pretty much on the same schedule!! He goes down at around 7, dream feeds at 11 and wakes up around 7, normally very happy just chatting to himself. Cecile also helped us so much, when I described what he was doing she said he was hungry, started solids and have seen a huge difference. He has never been easy to feed when it comes to formula. I hear you about feeling like a new woman, its great, making being back at work SO much easier!!
Thanks Cecile also suggested fb, forgot about that so will have a look.
Hope dr can clear it up quickly.
I do have bepanthen, was going to try that today but relunctant to keep putting different things on until the doc sees it. Poor wee man altho to be honest he doesn't seem that bothered (happy chappy as always), it's me that is more worried!
Re: re necklace, sorry it was a gift from a friend in Oz...I do believe someone sells them in Dubai though, a friend mentioned someone on Facebook so perhaps do a search there? DS is sleeping sooo much better too, not sure if it's solids or the wee bit of crying out we did with Cecile (only for 20 mins a few times and he seemed to get it) - he goes down around 6.30, dreamfeeds at 11 (I wake him), and then sometimes stirs around 5 or 6am where I just give the dummy and he sleeps until about quarter to 7....I feel like a new woman! Glad to hear your little one has improved too. :)
Shame your poor little guy, sounds so sore. I hope you find something that will clear it up. The cream I always found the best was bepanthen.
We are also going through the stage of starting solids and teething, can I ask you - where did you get your teething necklance from? Cecile suggested we get one but haven't managed to find one in Dubai yet. Hope your little one is sleeping better, we have seen a huge improvement since we started solids so long may it continue :)
