Thanks ladies, will try out some of the suggestions & recipes!
Kiwispiers - think I may just substitute the rice with spelt and see how it goes down? Is giving a "starch" for breakfast okay?
some good ideas here...

this is something we make often- soft enough for a 13 month old baby- easy too - just don't eat too much yourself

DS (17 months) has a homemade rice pudding (rissoto rice cooked with lots of milk and eggs into a thick porriagey texture) with an apricot, fig and banana puree for breakfast [b'>every single day[/b'>. He has been having this since he was about 8 months old ( I freeze it in big batches and DS zaps it in the morning) and luckily still isn't sick of it.
You don't have to give cereal type food at all, fresh fruits sounds great. Could you make an freeze little quiches, vegie fritters, homemade sugar free banana bread etc etc.
I think there are sugar free cherios out there?? have never given them myslef as we tend to avoid most grains esp oats but all my friends seem to search for one type in particular.
adult cereals are high in sugar, I'd stay away as long as you can.
hi plumie
I also have a 13 month old, she likes mini shredded wheat (no added salt or sugar) I let them sit in milk for a minute and then drain it off and she can pick them up and they're not too soggy. Cheerios are full of sugar, I've found a cereal called Orgran that looks the same, made with Quinoa at the Organic Supermarket.
Croissants are also a big hit and crumpets with butter.
Banana Oat Pancakes
1-1/3 cup plain flour
3/4 cup quick cooking oats (not instant)
1 Tbsp sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 egg
1 1/3 cup milk
1 cup mashed ripe banana
2 tbsp veg oil
Combine flour, oats, sugar, baking powder and cinnamon. In another bowl combine egg, milk, banana and oil. Stir into dry ingredients to combine.
Pour spoonfuls onto non stick pan and turn when bubbles appear. No need to grease the pan. Keep them on a plate wrapped in a teatowel until your finished making them all. (The steam in creates helps the pancakes)
When cold keep them in the freezer and take them out as needed.
I double this recipe so I don't have to make them often. Also add a handful of choc chips to the bananas (my kids are older)
Can substitute the banana for lots of flavours. My favourite is a punnet of blueberries, Grated apple and cinnamon. Can pretty much do anything and it tastes good.
Kids take these to school for lunch sometimes instead of a sandwich.
I like them straight from the freezer mid morning with a coffee still frozen but we won't talk about that :)
She's 13 months old, alowicious_28! I highly doubt it's teething as she never took to cereal since we starting weaning!
When you ladies say "porridge" what exactly are you referring to? In SA we called Pronutro, Jungle Outs, Maize Meal all porridge :\: And what brand?
I bought the Plum Baby Strawberry & Banana Muesli/Oats yesterday, mixed it with full fat milk and some yoghurt - opened her mouth to one spoonful, showed a very disapproving face and that was the end of it!
What is your take on Cheerios? DD seems to favor crunchy over mushy - so I think this is where the root cause of our problem lies...
My DS is having a phase with breakfasts at the moment and if it not a complete puree/non lumpy substance he will not eat it - but I put that down to teething because he used to eat anything and everything! If you haven't already tried the porridge I would go with that, its one of the only things my DS will eat atm, he also eats Weetabix but has to have puree in it otherwise he just spits it out. If there is a little flake or an oat that hasn't gone soft he pulls the most hilarious faces trying to spit it out of his mouth,
Have you signed up for the Annabel Karmel newsletter as she emails free recipies which you could use/alter and also she puts them on her Facebook page. If you are not a fan of hers then I am sure there are other people/chefs whose websites have some good kids recipies. BBC good food is another one I sometimes look at.
How old is your DD by the way? she's not being fussy because of teething is she?
My two luuurrrrrve porridge. I use a large rolled porridge oat brand (not Quaker, because that's more like "porridge dust" and just forms walpaper paste) and use just full-fat milk - it gives a great texture and is scrummy. You can also boil it up with raisins, chopped apple, banana or whatever else takes your fancy (vanilla extract or cocoa are a couple of others).
However, they are fickle, so some mornings we just have jam on toast. Lots of.
Have you tried porridge? In all honesty, I'm struggling with breakfast for all three of mine...but they have all had a porridge scoffing phase. My son loved it with mashed banana; older daughter liked it with pureed apple; younger daughter preferred a drizzle of honey.
Oats are cheap to buy, really good for them and there are lots of yummy oatey things to bake if she's not a porridge fan.
ETA: Pancakes! There are lots of relatively quick and healthy pancake recipes out there too...they're not an every day breakfast but great once in a while. Serve with yoghurt and fresh fruit. Mmmmmmmm

I've hit a brick wall with DD's breakfast menu, so looking for some inspiration please ladies!
DD does not eat any cereal, I have bought soooo many, but I think it's the texture which she does not like?! I'm a bit sceptical moving her onto "adult cereals" because of the sugar content - so any other cereal ideas would be great!
Yogurt - not a fan either! I've introduced it again by just putting the tub infront of her and letting her feed (more like mess) herself! It's going in, so thats a step up already! Coating fruit in yoghurt - no-no either!
Toast - philidelphia, marmite, Vegemite, peanut butter - hit and miss as I think she does not like the texture of the spreads against her palette!
So currently she has:
Egg - boiled, scrambled with cheese, fried, Omellete with a filling
Fruit - any fruit which she normally scoffs up!
Cheese - grated, babybel, mozzarella sticks - normally no problem
She has been starting to turn her nose up to the egg, so I think it's time to get creative and change things up a bit!
Do share your menu's/recipes please!!! Think I am suffering from "cooks block" ;)
