Someone told me the Magrudy's in Ibn Battuta is closing - is this correct?! Also heard that all the Borders bookstores will close. If this is the case we will go from having two great bookshops in Ibn Bat to none! : ((

How sad - I have only ever had excellent customer service at Magrudys. Ditto Claire. I'm not surprised that its the Jumeira store and the Festival City store that have remained, as I've always found them to be the best stores, but I'm really saddened to hear about the reduction in their "high street" presence. I wonder if the writing was on the wall when at the last minute they were removed as the bookseller at the Literary Festival this year? I'm not sure what the politics was about that decision, but I am fairly certain that there was some!

The rent for a shop or kiosk in these malls are ludicrous. Some malls even insist you pay them a percentage of your profit too! No wonder some malls have shops closing down.

Lots of problems in retail here. I know of people who were involved in retail development who are now jobless and not here anymore. It always seemed ridiculous that every mall had the exact same shops selling the exact same stuff at the exact same (mostly inflated) prices. Hopefully the retail problems will mean that we get some real diversity and real price competition for a change. One of the most insane things is the number of supermarkets around the bottom end of Discovery Gardens! There are literally about five or six all within easy walking distance of each other, all selling the exact same stuff at the same prices. It's impossible to see how they can all make enough money to survive long-term. Did the owners not realise when they took on the leases? Did Nakheel simply not tell them? edited by edna.welthorpe on 01/05/2011

I was so sad yesterday when we popped in and found out that it was their last day :( I'll really miss them as I don't enjoy Borders nearly as much.

I asked on Friday when I was there if they were closing on Sat and the lady said yes and I then asked if she was being moved to another store along with the Filipino guy ( wearing glasses) whom I know has been there for the whole 3 years I've been here and she said at this point they don't have jobs and were waiting to find out if they were being moved to another one or not. By the sounds of it though it did not sound promising for them.

There is no room for all the staff unfortunately - a lot have gone already with all the other shops closing. We have to wait and see what will happen in the next few days. This now leaves the Jumeriah branch and the DFC branch open in Dubai so please continue to support Magrudys!

I love the Magrudy stores but I think part of the problem is the choice of poor locations within the mall. The IB store is spacious but it is at the end of a section where there are few passersby. The gloria jeans opposite them has taken over the coffee bean and tea leaf spot in the food court. Even in Dubai Mall the Magrudys was downstairs and difficult to find while the ones in Festival City & Bur Juman that also closed were up out of the way on the top floor. It would be better to have a smaller area in a busy part of the mall than a large space in an area few people visit. For years it was really the only good book shop in Dubai. They need to do something to differentiate themselves from other book shops. Agree (especially re the Burjuman one) but the Deira one was right next to the Metro entrance and opposite Virgin Megastore and always busy so I thought it might have been the last to go-so hope the lovely staff were moved to other stores

Oh no this is so sad! I really love book stores and just browsing through them. Do you think they will be having a closing down clearance?

I was in Magrudy's I.B. last week and as usual it was very short on customers. Just me ! Their selection of cards is usually pretty good but they didn't have what I wanted. Asked the manageress if they would be getting any more and she said they wouldn't be re-stocking their cards. As they had shut their store in Dubai Mall I asked if they would be closing the one in I.B. She replied that she wasn't sure, which to me says they will.

I heard about Magrudy's but not Borders, honestly though it does not really surprise me - the rents in these malls is ludicrous for the smaller, lower profit, retailers.

There was a story about it in this weeks Express. Rising rents given as the reason.
