So women in abayas can no longer walk on the beach? Tough one, they could easily say that they shouldn't be there in the company of nearly naked men on the beach. However, I seriously doubt they would go that far, with cultural sensitivities. It would be too much. edited by Chocs01 on 09/11/2011

I cannot see what stops them from making the law say exactly what they intend to have it apply to. If they only want to get rid of 'ogglers' what stops them from making it an offence to oggle, it would definately fall within the context of cultural sensitivites. Now it is confusing, as it stands they say its illegal for anyone fully dressed to walk the beach. This leaves us wondering if they will interpret the law strictly or not, we run the risk of finding out the hard way it they intend to carry it out verbatim.

I think you have to read between the lines a little bit and would agree with desertrose, in that they are trying to stop those who would go to the beach just to oggle others. But they obviously can't flat out say that now can they.

A(nother) confusing law. So does that mean that families going to the beach with the women are covered or just plain don't want to go into the water so are wearing regular clothes, will not be allowed? It does clearly state that you can't be 'fully dressed'. Or is it just rules for 'some' sections of society? :\:

I can understand what they are trying to do, there's a certain kind of people that don't go to the beach to enjoy the beach, but rather enjoy the 'sights'. What they should do is to make the beach for families, couples, and anyone else dressed in beach attire, that way its only the culprits that will be banned or taken off the beach.

The way I understood the article, is that they want to prevent people bathing in full clothes, which will lead to transparent clothes once they are wet. It happens a lot with the local male dress and the Pakistani like clothes. Just try to be in their shoes : they have to deal here with highly conservative persons, specially during festive seasons where a lot of Saudi people come here, and all the working men here for one year without any wife nearby (well...officially...) and the westerners and other people who are more used to the beach activities and just want to enjoy a nice day sunbathing, swimming and having fun with their friends and family....Personnaly, I think they are doing a good job ! Agree, but if they only want to (rightly) stop people swimming in unsuitable attire, then why outlaw fully dressed people from walking on the beach? Should be just ban fully dressed from swimming. Now we cannot take a nice walk on the beach wearing our normal clothes.

what? so you now cannot go for a nice walk along the beach, fully clothed?! Seems so, that's what's reported, its now illegal for 'fully dressed people to walk on the beaches'. They do not stipulate men or women, so I take it as being applied to both gender. Maybe they're worried about people swimming fully clothed and getting into trouble in the water.

I was at the beach at the weekend and a plain clothed police officer removed people from the beach. One guy wasnt wearing trunks or the like, god knows what he had on but it was very see thru, disgusting actually. There was another guy shouting out things like, umm nice and shouting hello all the time, I wont repeat what I said but he got the message. Just perverts.

Perhaps it is to deter Peeping Toms -pity though as I often walk along the shore line fully dressed when beachcombing

I also thought "What the?" but the comments indicate that they are aiming at the 'ooglers' who come just to look. I suppose if you were in jogging clothes going for a run they'd leave you alone as it's obvious what you are doing. Maybe beach exercise is not such a big hit here yet as it is in other countries.

I get the transparent swimwear, nothing worse but how can you be overdressed on the beach? I suppose they only want people who are actually sunbathing or in the sea to use the beach

Police announce that in addition to underwear being illegal, it is also not permitted to be fully dressed on the beach. I get underwear being unsuitable, but how would you travel to the beach if you were not fully dressed on the way there and what about ladies who just want to use the beach wearing a normal skirt and blouse or dress, it that illegal now? Do we all have to strip down to swimsuit or leave? http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/fully-dressed-or-underwear-both-not-allowed-on-dubai-s-beaches-police-2011-11-09-1.427334
