A big thank you to all you lovely people for your advice .... Am delighted to share that my LO is now breastfeeding successfully without the shield since 2 weeks !!! He just took my breast one day .... no cry ... no fuss ... started feeding like he'd been doing it since birth !!! :)
Naaz, now that Pauline Miller and Joanne Francis have both left Dubai, there is no longer any Lactation Consultant who does home visits in Dubai that I am aware of other than Dr Delphine only if you are in the Mirdif area. (You need to contact her directly for that rather than making an appointment through the clinics - drop me a line on sian.breastfeedingqa at gmail.com if you'd like a contact for her.) But there is a midwife specially trained in lactation support who does do home visits - Sahar Al Husseini - her contact details are in the Breastfeeding Support in the UAE thread (I'll try to bump it up for you), and another midwife at Health Bay called Dawn Jackson who is also recommended. Good luck!

Hi... im new to Dubai but have been really lucky to book in with my OB at Health Bay Polyclinic, there are several midwives there who are Lactation Board Certified and they do home visits too..... i met one of them last week when i had my antenatal check and was really impressed to find a similar system to the UK system which im used to with docs and midwives working together. I feel happy that when i have my baby they will be able to come out and see me and her at home and do all our checks, my doctor (Dr Oksuz) is also ICBLC trained too which makes me feel confident that if i have any issues she will understand whats happening, good luck to you all, just though id share xx

Thank you ladies for your invaluable help .
@ SweetLily and Ilovewine - My LC at the hospital was a great help but am still struggling with my baby for the latching. I will def consider calling LC home as you suggested .... thank you so much for all the details. Truly appreciate it!
When I remove the nipple shield inbetween the feed and give my breast, baby starts sucking my nipple instead of the areola.... gets irritated and leaves my breast.I guess I need to spend more time and have more patience with the latching on.
I used to put the nipple shield and after a few minutes gently remove it.
I have tried that , Imolinar .... My baby knows the difference too well !! He immediately rejects my breast :-(
Hi Naazdxb,
i went through exactly what you are going through now. I was told i have inverted nipples and that breastfeeding was going to be very difficult, if not impossible. I used breast shields for many weeks. Then another poster on this forum said something interesting ... It is breastfeeding, not nipple feeding. Makes sense, right?
Anyway, i got a midwife from Healthbay Poly Clinic to spend 2 days with me ( they do home visits) and i am happy to say that DS is turning 4 months this weekend and is still exclusively breastfed! Phone any clinic and ask for a lactation consultant to come and see you. You pay for it, so ask ask ask as many questions until you are satsfied ... These ladies are amazing and will support you all the way.
With every feed, try the breast first. Squeeze your areola in the shape of your baby's mouth and bring your baby to your breast. So, if baby is lying on his side with his mouth vertical, then squeeze your areola vetically to fit into his mouth. If he changes position, then squeeze your areola accordingly.
Im looking for my thread on this topic and will post it when i find it. The ladies on this forum was so helpful and encouraging. Stick to it, and get help, it is SO worth it.
Good luck! X
I told you it wouldn't be long until you were giving the advice, Ilovewine. Lol. :) Congratulations on sticking with it and doing such a great job!
Naazdxb, that link has some good advice on there. There are a few tricks you can do to make it easier and as Ilovewine said babies attach to the breast tissue, not the nipple. Try taking baths with your baby. They are often really relaxed in the water with mama and can sometime overcome nursing challenges in he tub. Also lots of skin to skin. Try not using the shield a little bit every day and gradually increase the number of feeds without it. Try to stay relaxed and try without the shield during a time when your baby isn't overly hungry so that it is less likely he'll get frustrated and give up.
It also might be a good idea to visit a internationally board certified lactation consultant. They can really help you. There are three IBCLCs in Dubai. They are Dr Delphine Dupuis, Dru Campbell and Fatima Jaaoura.

i too have a flat nipple in one breast only and is producing excessive milk from that too. instead of nipple sheild i tried some thing by accident.i pump little milk from that while he is nursing on the other and then i switch sides.due to pumping areola swells a little which makes it easier for baby to latch on. i feed him in football hold ( google it) and he loves that and has started taking feed from right side.
weird but helping me :D

Hi Ladies,
My baby is 1.5 months old and he is addicted to nipple shield. I am using the nipple shield from day 1 since I have flat nipples. Hoping to get him to learn to latch on , but he totally rejects my breasts without the nipple shield. Also, he now wants to keep my nipple in his mouth and sleep throughout the night. When I withdraw my breast from his mouth when he falls asleep after feeding, he wakes up in a couple of mins and is searching for the nipple again. He becomes very fussy and cries till I have to give up and give my nipple in his mouth again. Mums with such experiences please share some valuable suggestions and tips on how to get my baby rid of the nipple shield on the whole.
cheers,
Naazdxb
