Hello ladies. My son will be going to FS1 in a week and I will have to pack him snacks and lunch. I have already made a menu for about 2 weeks so content wise I will be fine.
However, I just came back from Geant with some "cool" sandwich boxes and a lunch bag he picked out himself (Lighting Mc Queen of course) but I dont see anything fitting in that bag except for his drinking cup and a sandwich box.
I need to figure out a system as I want my son to practice this week in opening and eating from his lunchbox as he will be the youngest from his class and I want him to be prepared to eat with minimal assistance.
I was thinking in the lines of different styles of bento boxes and some nice storage boxes in all shapes that are spoon and fork friendly for a toddler to eat from. Could anybody steer me into the right direction?

Not read whole thread sorry. But just bought two bento boxes from virgin Mercato which can keep things both cool and hot. Really neat sizes enough for main meal.

When my two were at Al Khubairat school, just about all 600 children, including FS1 used the Coleman lunch box http://www.coleman.com/product/fliplidtrade-6-personal-cooler-red/5205A753G?contextCategory=8530#.Uh9XXzL6jIU We personalised them with a keyring or stickers. They make great seats too and stack like bricks in the corner of a classroom. We are still using them and my youngest left primary school 13 years ago. Probably of no interest, but I was reminiscing:)

Hi KenzaB I have this one http://www.lakeland.co.uk/17694/Smash-Nude-Food-Lunch-Box Made to meet whatever food combinations you fancy, it has three separate storage compartments – the middle one is sized for a sandwich or two, one end can be divided to look after snacks, and the other contains two removable containers, orange and green are ideal for sauces, dressings or yoghurt (I put fruit in them ;-)) I found this one at the Change Initiative... soOo happy... Gonna check it out this weekend as well. Never thought I could get so excited over lunch-boxes.. lol http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=513199478760675&set=a.315980208482604.72898.305586746188617&type=1&theater <em>edited by KenzaB on 29/08/2013</em>

So I got my bits and pieces from all the shops mentioned below except 6am and pottery barn. Going to Dubai Mall over the weekend and probably will go through 6am website when I have some time on Saturday afternoon. My son (previously known as the pickiest eater on the block) loves loves [b'>LOVES [/b'> opening all the different lunchboxes and finding colourful fruits and veggies in there, actually he hasnt eaten as healthy in his whole life as in the last few days, I wish I would have done this before. Carrot sticks seem to be a lot more interesting if they come in a decorated bentobox with an airtight lock... haha. He actually goes, mom where are my surprise snacks for today? Whats inside whats inside my lunchboooox? Nashwa, to answer your question, I got a thermos from Bumblebee at Dubai Mall when my son was still on food purees and it works quite well to keep food hot. It is a bit bigger than the one on the picture in your link and has all kinds of cute shapes on it. Maybe you can check it out? I never tested it for cold so cant answer you on that.

Morning Ladies, Did not want to open yet another lunch box thread, so jumping on this one. ;-) My question is about the thermos for the lunch box. Any advice on tried and tested brands? Saw a nice one at DB Babies and also one at PotteryBarn, but not sure. Does anyone have this one? If so, what's your opinion? http://dbbabies.com/product/2-years-and-older/lunchbots-thermal-food-container-dark-blue/ What makes do you guys use, which are good in keeping the food hot / cold till about lunch time? Thanks so much.

Did you think about using a sandwich bag, as the kids find it very easy to open. FS1 will only have a snack in the morning (mine finished at 12pm and came home for lunch), so a whole sandwich might be too much.

KenzaB I bought my LO a lunchbox from Pottery Barn Kids. It is insulated and I bought some cute shaped ice packs to go inside. Inside fits perfectly a bento box with different compartments. Unfortunately, there is not room for a juice or bottle inside the box but they sell these little bottles that are meant to go in the side of the rucksacks. The cool thing is about the PB lunchboxes is that they have 2 clips so they can "piggy back" on the back of the PB rucksacks. Here is what I bought: http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/spencer-bento-box-containers/ and it goes inside this: http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/fairfax-lavender-gingham-lunch-bag/?pkey=cshop-all-lunch-bags& I ordered from the states but they sell here. absolutely love them! will get them for my LO's..very useful and love the bento containers! so excited :D

Hi Kenza, I bought DD one of these http://www.6ambabies.com/en/617-lunch-bag-purple-elephant.html and am very pleased with it. It's quite big & I can fit in a lunchbox (the one I have is deep enough for me to put in a small container with dip inside), 2 small containers with fruit & crackers & cheese and a juice box. HTH

We have the outer lunch box cooling shell from Daiso, then just fill it with small plastic "Rice" brand containers (from UK) & things wrapped in foil or cling film or mini snap lock bags from Geant. As for your son, I'm sure he will be fine & there will be TA's to help him too. Ask them to put everything he doesn't eat back into the lunch box, so you can get an estimate at home of how he is doing... I use a simple home-made calendar for lunch boxes so I rotate through things & keep it a bit interesting... Also try Pinterest for awesome lunchbox ideas! I send everything from chicken pasta salad to vegemite sandwiches to vegetarian quesadillas in my 2.5yo's lunch box! HTH

Hi KenzaB, I got my kids plastic "sandwich" boxes from Spinneys, a few plastic boxes from Ace, a set of boxes from Paperchase, and the cheap multipack set from Ikea. All their snack and food bits fit. My older kid's lunch goes into his Lightning McQueen backpack. My younger kid doesn't have a backpack, he has a Pooh Bear lunch bag with a long carry strap. I obsessed over their water bottles until I found one that I really love and it insulates the drink inside really well.

That system actually does make sense, but now I see I will need to buy a new school bag to fit all these lunch bags, joy oh joy. Will give the school a call tomorrow just to make sure about their system.

you might want to check with school/ teacher about what their 'system' is for snacks and lunch - at our school the snacks have to be packed in a completely separate container to the lunch as they go on a tray in the morning; the lunch box stays in the bag until lunchtime. the bentobox wouldnt work in this case.

All right, a trip to Pottery Barn Kids is planned for tomorrow morning. Thanks DB!! Someone told me to go to Daiso but I am a bit concerned about BPA unfriendly containers there, dont want to sound like an overprotective mom but I really want something child friendly. What are your thoughts on stainless steel containers? I saw the following online but my husband isnt a fan of stainless steel for food conservation. http://dbbabies.com/product/2-years-and-older/stainless-steel-trio-of-containers-sky/
