I've been thinking of trying eyelash extensions for some time now! I seem to have less and less with age :( ive tried putting falsies on myself but I end up feeling like I've got 2 heavy insects weighing down my lids the whole evening! But have been worried about a couple of things..

I've researched whether or not they cause damage to your natural lashes and it seems as long as you take care and don't pull at them etc it's ok? Do you ladies back this up?

Also, it's so expensive!! Is the average about 500dhs for an initial full set and then it's a bit less for the top ups? Do you have to do it every 3 weeks too? Any good salons that do it for less than this? Do mobile ladies do it for a little bit more affordable?

Also, this may seem a silly question, but I like to really wash and cleanse my face of makeup in the evening, if I put mascara on them, or eyeliner on my top eyelid, I'll just end up damaging them by removing the makeup surely? I also seem to sleep on the side of my face and move a lot in the night, they will probably just end up coming off??

Wow amazing responses thank you all! this has really helped me more than my internet research - personal experiences are always more helpful! I also enjoyed reading a bit about the nails because I'd always wondered about them too, but told not to because my nails are too delicate! Which is another shame because Id love love love to have false nails too but I think I would end up damaging them. I am thinking I may try some kind of serum first for my eyelashes see how that works out! And maybe invest in a good mascara! I just never tried the serum because I never believed they may work, like most things never do what they say on the bottle but It's a less expensive risk than the falsies. Thank you all again! The YSL volume effect is a good mascara and the Maybelline ones are okay

Geordie, it's because I have a sun spot which I've heard can be removed by laser, but on consultation was advised not to cos apparently laser can make it worse..... dunno, but I wouldn't want to do anything that could damage my skin cos beyond that I'm fairly happy with it..... I would definitely listen to the consultant who advised against the laser then. In this part of the world where everywhere wants your money, its good they have been this honest with you. Sorry I cant help further with peels and treatments - fortunately I haven't needed to use any of these... yet!

hey sarah, that's brilliant, thanks so much for your reply. I love Dermalogica and I have never had what I would call an 'advanced' facial, I just like the steam/mask kind of thing. Your reply confirms what I've thought often, that a lot of these treatments cause more problems than they solve.... with the exception of laser hair removal, which I have tried and thought was worth it.... thanks again for your reply, you should get your mate to write a blog......

hey sarah, I hope you don't mind me asking you this, but you seem pretty knowledgeable about all things aesthetic and I was wondering if you would mind giving this board a heads up on what cosmetic procedures you reckon are worth it and which aren't. I'm asking this because I saw you write somewhere that lasers are a total waste of time, I'd love to hear your thoughts on stuff like that..... haven't had anything done, but was thinking of maybe having a peel, got super sensitive skin and at the moment happy with how things are, but thinking of whether/what to do in future...... I have very sensitive skin and a touch of roscea. Do not touch lasers or peels as it will make it ten times worse. The cosmetic surgeon I used to use for fillers and botox warned me not to touch peels etc due to my sensitive skin ( I go red easily and have to be careful) He didn't have to tell me this as he offers those procedures. I now have regular facials with Dermologica ultra calming products and they help massively. I was using the age smart as i am over 40 but switched to ultra calm as it reduces my sensitivity and my redness isn't as bad. My friend who lives in the UK has had Fraxel, Vampire facials, skin peels, everything known to man :-) and I have said she should blog about her experiences as it would help other women. She said by the time the swelling had gone down after the laser it wasn't worth it and she couldn't see much difference.Her face looked like chopped liver after the Fraxel. The vampire facial helped her skin surface but only tightened her skin slightly so not worth the money.

The lady at the salon I have started going to will only do gellish for me every two months or so. She insists that I have a normal manicure in between. I have nevr had problems with a pedicure either, the girl is always very good and has never "dug' down the sides of my toes. Mind I could never say the same about the previous salon I used.

I get a gel bio-sculpture overlay on my hands and feet, lasts about 3 weeks before starting to slightly peel at the sides. I do get them done every 3-4 weeks. It is true, it weakens your nail bed and if I did not get them re-done each time they would probably snap. But, the gel can actually keep your nails strong aswell at the same time. But, I think it is about finding a good nail therapist too, as I used to go to anybody within the same salon and my nails used to be a mess and split when they soaked the gel off, but I have found the best nail technician now and my nails are usually in pretty good shape when she soaks the gel off. I think the risk with your nails is less than the eyelash debate :)

Daza, I've heard this from so many people. My cousin had her nails done, I confess I don't know the brand name, but it sounded like a plastic coating which lasted for about a month? Anyway, she said that it wrecked her nails and the nails of her friend who did it at the same time. I'm really pretty cautious about anything like that, talking of which sometimes when I am having a pedicure I see the way some of the beauticians are digging around down the side of other customers' toenails with a metal implement and I don't understand how they're sitting still! I'd be off my seat and out the door! Blimey, I won't let them do any of that kind of thing! I have gellish every 3 weeks and it hasn't ruined my nails at all. Perhaps I am lucky. I haven't had it done on my feet though. I used to use gel and acrylic and that did ruin my nails I love having my feet done but once they start filing the sole to get the dead skin off I cannot stop laughing as am very ticklish.

I've never done the false nail thing for similar reasons, one girl in a salon told me that they totally destroy your real nails and I'd be mad to do it, dunno if others here have had that experience? Haven't done false nails but a few months of Gellish wrecked my toenails. So brittle and dry.

I agree with most posters here, they are just not worth the expense or the 3 hours it takes to put them on. I am lucky to have long eyelashes but wanted something that made them look a bit thicker so I decided to have them done for a friend's wedding 2 years ago. They had a 50% off deal at the time, so that probably swayed me a little more too. I applied mascara to mine most days not every day, and removed it on a night gently but it never properly come off therefore I always felt like I had make up on which isn't a nice feeling... and also felt like I had constant dark shadows underneath my eyes too off the mascara I couldn't get off. Over the course of a couple of weeks I would wake up in the morning and they would be lying on my pillow - and some of them had my REAL eyelashes attached to them! So they do take your natural lashes out, and not only that they snapped some of mine too. Once I had them off, I noticed my lashes were considerably shorter in length and so thin and brittle. I used vaseline every night before bed on them to start strengthening them again! I definitely wouldn't have them done again!

I had mine done for my wedding only. Yes, it's pretty but the feeling was like having false eyelashes all the time, even before you go to sleep which is quite uncomfortable for me. I would have it done again but only on special occasions.

I've had my lashes done every couple of months for the past year and although they look fabulous (the compliments I get are incredible) they damage your natural lashes a lot. I've been asked to give it a break for a few months and use a strengthening oil. I would recommend them only if you are going on a fancy holiday or have a long occasion and don't want to bother with gluing on and off fake lashes everyday.

I haven't got much in the way of eyelashes, but I tend to stick to having them tinted every six to eight weeks. Makes them look longer and I can always chose the colour.

I had them done but because I am fair they didn't look right to me they look false and far too long. I ended up cutting them shorter to make them look right. They felt weird, not hairlike but like you have applied too much mascara. I ended up pulling most of them out. I then tried the individual lashes but had to give up as the glue really affected my eyes, they were watering like crazy and some of it got on my skin which flared up badly! I now stick to falsies which once you get the hand of putting them on are easy to apply

Hi, I think you're right to do some research first. Like Polly, I considered having them done, but decided against it after talking to the beautician who did them. She was pretty good and advised me that I probably wouldn't tolerate them since I have sensitive eyes. To be honest, it just sounded like an enormous faff. Apparently a lot of people are allergic to the glue used in the process and as others have mentioned, you can't use any oil based products, like cleansers, while wearing them. I think I would have hated restrictions on makeup removal and not having the 'clean skin' feeling after washing. Dunno. They're very popular, but when overdone I think they look incredibly naff, you know that spider lash thing that just looks ridiculous? If you wanted to give them a test run, try a half set, but if you feel any kind of sensitivity go back and have them removed pronto. Seen some grim pictures on the internet of nasty allergic reactions, let us know how you get on if you give them a whirl.......

I used lash extensions, but the same as Daza I dont like the feel nor the damage they cause - and they do cause damage. They fall out and take your lash its adhered to as well, the extra weight, and the glue. Give Li Lash a try, or some of the other lash growth serums. I am using one I bought from Singapore and the difference it has made has been amazing. I put it on my eyelashes and eyebrows every night and I am seeing visible difference in length and density.

I had them done once and loved how they looked but hated how they felt. I really missed that post shower and cleanse fresh faced feeling as it felt like I hadn't taken my make up off properly. I wouldn't get it done again.

Thanks for your response! Do you mind me asking why you decided against it? I don't mind. I have extremely sensitive eyes and was concerned they would bother me - after a long discussion it was recommended that they probably would drive me mad! But it was good to talk about it all - as I really wanted them.
