This is my teary one...though there are bigger troubles in life: my 3 yr old has been prescribed glasses for hyperopia (farsightedness). After researching shops I feel so clueless and hope I can get an advise: which brands of glasses are the best for a young kids like him, meaning fits well, are light and cute? which shops do you make lenses? Is it normal that the good lenses (I researched shops in Dubai Mall like Magrabi Kids, Grand Optics and several more) cost 1200 Dhs + flexi frame Dhs 500 which is quite a fortune knowing all the possibilities of loosing and breaking it? How on earth I can convince my boy to wear it? (it takes me 3 weeks to convince him to wear new shoes, he never accepts to wear any costume and is very particular about things he wears...) Sight..

Thank you ladies for your great advice. We did had our son at the shop to put on the glasses and he was so proud, he was looking himself at the mirror and was smiling proudly, it was so cute and relieving to see he didn't throw it across the shop instantly :) We watched cartoon Lola and Charlie "I really need glasses" a day before, I think it helped. Books are great idea, will get them in the longer term. Also thinking of organising playdates to meet new friends wearing glasses? non of our current friends do..We found that in Europe it is cheaper - at least for lenses. Some moms also referred to ISEE eyewear shop in Dubai, we yet to go there. I was wearing glasses and so did my husband when we were you but not anymore, but I will if I need to help my son. Bless you all xxx

My oldest twins (now men) were both prescribed glasses here when they were 5 yrs old. (short sighted) Although I wear glasses / well contact lenses since I was a teen here....and have poor eyesight I too was devastated and cried. But they coped well and I eventually got used to them in them in their frames, and prescription got progressively worse over the years. That was probably 17-18 yrs ago and their first optitions was in Magrudys Center and specialised in children's frames. But maybe no longer there. They didn't break too many pairs, bent frames and cut bridges of noses later on playing football in them heading the ball! Though both also now for years have had contact lenses for certain things, 99.9% of the time they wear and prefer to wear their glasses and look quite strange when not wearing them. I know 3 is a big difference to 5, but let him pick frames with you and have a chat before hand about things so you aren't both overwhelmed on the day. I think I was more than my children. Good luck. edited by Solo on 06/04/2015

My niece just started to wear glasses age 3.5. I think it was a shock more for my sister than little Charlotte. It is hard to adjust to for everyone but actually Charlotte has adjusted just fine and has even started kissing her glasses at nursery! Do either you or your hubby wear glasses? Maybe start wearing them instead of contacts? I also suggest buying some books about glasses wearing. My sister lives in the UK; maybe try to call a UK or Europe based optician for a second opinion to find out what you really need? Good luck xxx

Cibacibute, it sounds like your son has an amazing mum! Here's a [url=http://littlefoureyes.com/books-for-kids/'>link[/url'> to story books for young children who wear glasses. It seems you can order most from Amazon. I'm also far-sighted, had a strabismus . . . and wore glasses from the age of two! I still have some of the old story books my parents read me, and that had a main character wearing glasses. The books are back home or I would have lent them to you. Good luck with everything :) edited by NorthernLights on 03/04/2015

Tru Blu thank you, sounds great! I was browsing the coolframes dared not I ever think there are so many:) As an absolute kids eyewear newbie in the past two days I learned Specky's, Swissfflex and Miraflex and thought this is it, but these are not on their list. Which brand of the cool frame stock do you buy for 3 yrs old..?

My oldest son wears glasses and has been doing so since he was 3 years old. It was a big shock for us but its fine. One of the best things about living in Dubai is that people are so accepting and tolerant because there is so much diversity here. I am pretty sure that if we were back in Australia he would be teased (particularly as we need to patch one of his eyes at school every day), but here, no one has said a thing. We spent thousands and thousands of dirhams here on lenses, frames etc.... until my husband discovered coolframes.com They have an extensive range, prices are cheap, and they will replace frames damaged within the first year. Best of luck x

Thank You Hungry Caterpillar for your advice :) Its been 2 days only since the news and still dealing with my own emotions just because he is so little.. I am afraid I will start tearing while asking him to be a big boy :)) Yep, have to get my act togather.. I am not sure if your little one needs to wear glasses ?In case of yes, would you mind sharing which brands you chosen for the frame and lenses? Where to shop for it best? ... and good luck with potty training :) edited by cibacibute on 02/04/2015 edited by cibacibute on 02/04/2015

My little one's personality is the same so I understand how you feel. I find he's more acceptant if I sit down and talk him through a change thats about to occur. I'll explain it to him and what he will do. I ask him if he can please do it for me. I show videos, read him related books. For example right now we're reading a story book about potty training. Goodluck!
