She is 6 weeks today, doesn't nap much during the day and was trying to think of nice things we could do together! She loves her bath and we have a very child friendly pool downstairs so was wondering if I could take her swimming although suspect she is too young? Also, what do I put her in? She has water wings but nappy wise??

Thanks :)

Reidly i got it from Sainsburys back home for £3.50! Lots of the little tots suits have them inbuilt. Obviously it does nothing for number 1's but supposedly catches the number 2's!

We started DS swimming at 3 months. I had attended professional baby swim training in the London with my neice who was born there, and this was they date 'they' advised was safe, due to vaccinations etc, and we started dunking them straight away during classes. DS (now 14 months) LOVES the water and loves being dunked still - we just make sure we use the same cue every time, and he shuts his eyes on the '3' of 1,2,3 knowing he is going under. I would also say, our pool is very well maintained however, so I would be less keen on dunking if it wasn't as well tended, and he got ear infections. I was keen to start dunking quite early as it gets them used to it, and gives them confidence in the water.

Ooh suit with inbuilt nappy sounds good - can I ask where you got that? I am thinking of getting the disposable huggies swimmers but haven't been able to find any in DD's size.

Just started taking DD and she is 4 months. No dunking and we stay in the shade. We just hold her so no flotation devices yet, and she wears a suit with inbuilt nappy. hth.

LOL jeniawwad! My DD is 7 weeks on Thurs - we should meet up. I do remember suggesting all us Feb due date ladies should meet up for coffee but that was, of course, when we were still pregnant. I only have the one child but there are mornings when I can barely get dressed :) I did go for a swim the other evening when DH got home. Wore my maternity swimming costume and it wasn't too bad. Won't be getting the bikini out any time soon though. Thanks for all the advice on taking DD swimming. Once I've hunted down some swim nappies we're all set!

A good rule of thumb: when you are ready to get into a swimsuit after having a baby, the baby is probably okay to go swimming too LOL (both of my boys have been in pools since they were about 2-3 months. They are 3yrs and 2yrs now and haven't ever had a problem) completely off topic. my new DD is 7 weeks and i tried to go shopping for a bathing suit yesterday.. what a horrible horrible experience. Those HUGE mirrors, the unflattering lights, my poor mummy-tummy..... *sigh*

LO was in the pool by the age of 9 weeks old ... and it was in late afternoon in May - so the weather wasn't too cold nor too hot.

Where can you find the Zoggs trainer seats? DD is almost 5 months old so can't wait to take her into the pool soon :) Just saw it in the ELC catalogue ... heading out soon to look for one myself :)

Thanks ladies. Meals - thanks for the tip on the huggies nappies and meant to say that DD has a trainer seat thingie by zoggs that will support her in the water, not water wings as definitely agree she is too weeny for those. As she is 6 weeks she's had her first lot of vaccinations (BCG, Hep B1 & 2) so I think she should be OK but will ask the midwife just to be sure :) I second the Zoggs trainer seats...they are brilliant!

I took DD when she was a couple of months - just keep an eye on her skin, and make sure you rinse her off after. Don't bother with water wings, they will just get in the way...and shouldn't be used at any age....and use a swim diaper..... edited to add - I just wouldn't be putting her under yet edited by Mrs Laughan on 03/04/2011

6 months, really?? I agree with babies having delicate skin and the pool water issues in Dubai but I swam throughout my pregnancy and we are both fine. Better safe than sorry though so guess I will wait a while longer. Thanks all.

Yes I would tend to agree for 6 month (ish ) because lil ones are not supposed to be in direct sun and most sunscreens are not until 6 months as babies skin is sooooo delicate, also the water not being clean is very true I didn't take my 1st DD swimming until a year old to a swim class she got 2 colds/virus' in the space of a month, doc suspected because of the water, germs, chemicals ect...

We were seeing Dr Khan and he only gave us the green mlight for the swimming pool at 6 months. On another note, during my pregnancy the OB I saw advised me to avoid swimming pools in Dubai, as according to her they were not exactly clean. I disregarded her advice, but for a 6 week old I would think twice.

Water wings? You mean those floatied for arms??? I wouldn't be using those until she can sit unsupported. You're best buying one of those floating seats she can sit in - she needs to be able to sit upright really. Also - for bottoms - huggies makes little swimmers - nappy's for the pool. Won't hold a wee in so be aware of that but will stop the floaters! ;)

In the UK I was told by the midwives / health visitors that they are safe to take from birth, but I waited until after the first set of imms just to be sure.

Im not 100% sure but I think that they advise to wait until they have had their first set of vaccinations :)

i think 6 weeks is still too young to be in chlorinated water... My DD also loves her baths and I waited til she's 4 months.. as that's what the minimum age to join a swimming class for bubs...
